[Goanet-News] Goa-related books... in Margao

2011-05-12 Thread Frederick [FN] Noronha * फ्रेडरिक नोरोन्या *فريدريك نورونيا
Some Goa-related books which I picked up from the Golden Heart Emporium
(near GPO, Margao) just last evening, for my collection:

* KONKANI FOLK TALES, Retold by Olivinho Gomes. NBT, 2007, reprint 2008.
ISBN 978-81-237-5083-5. Great VFM (value for money) at Rs 75 only for a 232
page book. (Today, books in India, paperback ones, are roughly priced at one
rupee a page.) Grab it if you can. Not easily available, perhaps because NBT
commissions work out very low on their low-priced books!

* LANDMARKS OF GOA'S LIBERATION. A Goan Observer Tribute. ISBN
978-81-89837-08-2. Rs 150 . Pp 82. 2010. Somehow I had not seen this book
earlier, or did not know where to find it.

* WORLD OF BIRDS. By Anthony Carvalho. By Anthony Carvalho. 78pp. Rs 45. nd.
Interesting listing of birds of Goa. Originally in Romi Konkani, translated.
Probably have a copy of this book, but no problem in having an extra one,
specially since it is a self-published book and these can soon turn hard to
locate.

* KALEIDOSCOPE OF WOMEN IN GOA. Fatima da Silva Gracias. Pp 166. ISBN
81-7022-591-4. Rs 250. "This study provides a picture of the life styles of
women both Christian and non-Christian in Goa (a tiny state in the west
coast of India) during Portuguese rule." This is for a member of the Goa
Book Club who requested a copy!

* FRANCISCO LUIS GOMES. By Olivinho JF Gomes. Rs 90. ISBN 978-81-237-5801-5.
Pp 260. Another interesting NBT book! Published posthumously after the
untimely death of former acting Goa University vice chancellor and prolific
writer Dr Olivinho Gomes.

[Goanet-News] DIASPORA: An early Goan editor... in Ceylon

2011-06-18 Thread Frederick FN Noronha * फ्रेडरिक नोरोन्या *فريدريك نورونيا
Armand de Souza
>From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Armand de Souza (29 October, 1874 – 1921) was a Ceylonese newspaper
editor and democratic activist. He was father of Senator Doric de
Souza of the LSSP (the Lanka Sama Samaja Pakshaya, Sri Lanka’s
Trotskyist party) and Torismund de Souza, Editor of the Times, as well
as Aleric and Lena who both died early.

[edit]Early life

De Souza was born in Assagaum, Goa, to an ancient Roman Catholic
family belonging to the Saraswat Brahman community. He was the tenth
descendant of Roulu Camotin who had converted to Catholicism at the
point of the sword in 1537, changing his name to Diego de Souza at his
baptism. Armand de Souza was the son of a famous advocate, Antonio
Narcisso Vasconcellos de Souza, himself the son of a famous advocate
and Latin scholar, Antonio José de Souza.[1] Orphaned at a young age,
he was left in the care of an aged grandmother who arranged that the
boy’s uncle, Dr Lisboa Pinto, should adopt him.[2] Dr Lisboa Pinto,
the Honorary Consul of the United States in the Colony of Ceylon,[3]
enrolled the fifteen year old de Souza at the Royal College. Principal
John Harward of Royal College encouraged de Souza’s passion for
history and English literature. De Souza cut his editorial teeth as
the editor of the Royal College Magazine. At school he was known for
his writing and oratory.[4] De Souza was expected to be called to the
Bar in the family tradition, but he fell out with his uncle and made
his own way in life. [5]

[edit]Journalistic Career

De Souza received his journalistic training at the Times of Ceylon
where he was a highly valued member during his eight years of service.
He moved to the Standard because he disagreed with the editor of the
Times of Ceylon, Mr Roles, on public issues. He founded the Morning
Leader in July 1907, but as he was only thirty-three years old he took
on the role of Chief Reporter and Sub-Editor, leaving the Chief
Editor's position to Mr. J. T. Blazé. However the proprietors soon
insisted that De Souza should take over, replacing Mr Blazé’s gentler
prose with his forceful rhetoric. [6] Over five years “he brought
about a renaissance among the different communities in regards to
matters social, political and intellectual. He was greatly responsible
for the national awakening among the different classes and communities
of the permanent population of the island…..to a very large extent to
the awakening of the Singhalese in particular”. [7] Through editorial
advocacy for constitutional reform he secured for the people of Ceylon
the right to elect four members (including one ‘Educated Ceylonese
Member' to the Legislative Council that had from its inception on 22
May 1834 to 15 November 1911 consisted merely of official and
appointed members. He then fought for the election of all unofficial
members according to constituencies and for an unofficial majority in
the Legislative Council.[8] [9] He was opposed to racial
representation in the Legislative Council and to the representation of
the two major races respectively by two families over several
generations.

In 1914 De Souza was indicted for writing an editorial entitled
“Justice at Nuwara Eliya” that suggested that Thomas Arthur Hodson was
sympathetic to the views of the constabulary when he tried cases as
District Judge and Police Magistrate.[10] He was represented by Mr
Bawa K.C. before a three-judge Bench of the Supreme Court(Renton,
Pereira and De Sampayo) that sentenced him to one month simple
imprisonment, reportedly without a proper hearing. The result was that
there was a huge public protest. The Hon. Harry Creasy wrote to the
press that “[i]t is as important to every man and woman in this colony
that the Press should have full liberty to criticise and praise or
condemn the actions of the government and all public officers as it is
that the Courts should sternly repress any undue license in such
criticisms or condemnations”. [11] The Press joined in to support De
Souza. After six days in his cell, De Souza was released by order of
Sir Robert Chalmers, the Governor. He was led from the prison in a
chariot, by a grateful people, to much public clamour.

[edit]Writings

De Souza documented the race riots in Ceylon in 1915 in a book
entitled Hundred days: Ceylon under martial law in 1915. This book is
in the library of Leonard Woolf, now in the Washington State
University Libraries special collection.[12]

[edit]Death

De Souza died of enteric at the age of 47 in 1921. Among those who
wrote tributes and appreciations after de Souza’s death was the Revd.
A. G. Fraser, Principal of Trinity College, Kandy. His piece that
appeared in the Morning Leader on 18 May 1921 is reproduced below in
full.

“The news of Mr Armand de Souza’s death came as a great shock, for I
had not even known he was ill. I believe Ceylon could hardly have had
a greater loss. Few realise how much he did for us

Konkani Muslims
>From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Konkani / Kokani Muslims is a Muslim sub-ethnic group of Maharashtrian
Muslims living in the Konkan region of India. They speak the Konkani
language. A good number of them live in Mumbai. There is a large
Konkani Muslim diaspora community of economic migrants working in the
Arab states of the Persian Gulf, the UK, the USA, South Africa and
East Africa (where they have been established for almost a century).

Muslims from the Maharashtrian districts of Raigad, Thane, Ratnagiri,
Sindhudurg as well as from the state of Goa are generally regarded as
Konkani Muslims. The Muslims of Southern Raigad and Ratnagiri district
speak a dialect of the Marathi language called Bankoti/Sangameshwari,
while those from southern Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg and Goa speak the
Konkani language. Muslim people of south Sindhudurg near Malvan and
the former Maratha princely states of Sawantwadi and Oros speak a
dialect of Marathi / Konkani called Málvani language. The main food of
Kokni Muslims is non-vegetarian, mostly sea-food. Its staple food is
rice and bread made of rice (preferred at dinners) with fish and
lentils or vegetables. It is mainly influenced by Maharashtrian
cuisine.

A small number of Konkani Muslims are also settled in the city of
Karachi in Pakistan, particularly in the Kokan Town neighbourhood.

They predominantly adhere to the Shafi`i Madhab, unlike most Muslims
from the subcontinent who are Hanafis[1].

[Goanet-News] Konkani plans... Wikipedia

2011-07-09 Thread Frederick FN Noronha फ्रेडरिक नोरोन्या *فريدريك نورونيا
 Konkani goes global on Wiki
Published: Friday, Jul 8, 2011, 8:00 IST
By *M Raghuram* | Place: Mangalore | Agency: DNA

For the first time, the world will hear Konkani, the language spoken by
people in the coastal states of Karnataka, Kerala, Goa, Maharashtra and
Gujarat. And it will be heard at ‘Wikimania’ — world conference on language
interface and web media organised by the Wikipedia group at Haifa in Israel
starting on August 2.

Thanks to the research done on ‘inter-script transliteration programme’ by
the Konkani Language and Cultural Foundation at the World Konkani Centre,
experts around the world can now have a glimpse of the rich literature,
traditions, music, theatre and culture of Konkani people. “For the first
time Konkani will break away from the barriers of scripts, which will give
it a universal acceptance,” said Vaman Shenoy, director, Konkani Language
and Cultural Foundation Basti.

The two Konkani scholars, Gurudutt Buntwalkar and Hariprasad Nadig,
conceptualised this new ‘Inter-script Transliteration Programme’ in the
‘plug in’ version. In an exclusive preview to *DNA *Gurudutt said “Usage of
multiple scripts in Konkani language has hindered sharing of knowledge
between the communities. With the advent of Internet, technology has enabled
an accessible knowledge sharing platform for Indian languages through
Unicode.”

Like any language Konkani also had its share of conflicts over the script.
“This new research initiative will end all that confusions,” said Gurudutt.

ADDING SOME DETAILS--FN

Guru Baliga gurubal...@gmail.com mentioned that they are organising a
Workshop on 18th July 2011, at World Konkani Centre, Mangalore. Baliga wrote
to me saying, "We are also involving some techies from Infosys this time."

Besides, he along with H.P. Nadig of the Kannada Wikipedia had submitted a
paper for Wikimania 2011 and it got accepted for the presentation at
Wikimania, Haifa, Israel. More information on this

or http://bit.ly/jczTRl

They plan to conduct a series of Wiki Academies in colleges for the
promotion of Konkani Wikipedia this year. "We will plan for this aspect also
on the sidelines of a Technical Session at the workshop," he said.

[Goanet-News] IN GOA: PublishingNext, the Indian publishing conference, will 'get people thinking about what the future holds for publishing' (yourstory.in)

2011-09-15 Thread Frederick [FN] Noronha * फ्रेडरिक नोरोन्या *فريدريك نورونيا
PublishingNext, the Indian publishing conference, will 'get people
thinking about what the future holds for publishing'

Exclusive chat with Leonard Fernandes, founder of CinnamonTeal
Publishing, organizer the conference in Goa on September 16 and 17

Leonard Fernandes cofounded CinnamonTeal Publishing with his wife
Queenie. CinnamonTeal won the British Council’s Young Creative
Entrepreneur Award for publishing in 2010. Read his interview here.

On September 16 and 17, CinnamonTeal is hosting PublishingNext, a
conference that will debate what future holds for publishing given
rapid changes taking place in technology and the way books are
published, read or delivered. New business models might emerge that
are entirely different from the traditional publishing models in use
today. Read agenda here. The discussions include digital books, social
media’s impact on publishing, copyright issues, translation in
publishing, publishing houses of the future, in addition to some
workshops including the one on academic writing.

Leonard Fernandes, founder of CinnamonTeal Publishing, explains to
YourStory’s chief evangelist what PublishingNext is all about. For
registrations, see home page of PublishingNext website.

YourStory: Thank you Leonard for talking to YourStory on
PublishingNext. For our readers to get an idea of what you do, can you
please give a brief introduction about CinnamonTeal Publishing.

Leonard: We started CinnamonTeal in 2007 after heeding requests to
publish the books of some of our regulars on dogearsetc.com, our
online bookstore. Since India had already so many publishers, we
wanted to develop a new model of publishing and so adopted that of
being a provider of self-publishing services. Today, 4 years later, we
have catered to authors in about 18 countries and have published books
in 9 languages. We have also increased our repertoire of services to
include translations, indexing, ebook development and distribution and
audio books.

YourStory: PublishingNext is perhaps the first Indian conference on
what publishing is and is going to be, especially with Internet and
digital media set to change the rules of the game. Can you explain the
objectives of the conference?

Leonard: Our objective was to get people thinking about what the
future holds for publishing rather than get lost in the day to day
routine of publishing and mind little about the dangers and potential
the next wave of technology and business models bring about. We also
wanted to provide a platform where new ideas and technologies could be
talked about and debated.

YourStory: Let’s now talk about specific segments: digital books. Can
you give us an idea about their uptake in India at present?

Leonard: My personal opinion is that many publishers are experimenting
with new ideas that involve digital content, among them Penguin,
Panther Books and Tulika Publishers, Chennai, to name a few. However,
I feel that these publishers are preparing themselves for any future
demand rather than experiencing any significant returns on investment
presently.

YourStory: Social media — your take on its impact on publishing.

Leonard: This varies widely between publishers. Some like Tulika
(Chennai), Tara Books and Pratham Books are doing a really good job
with it, others have a difficult time understanding what it is capable
of doing for them. So there still remains a lot of ground to be
covered.

YourStory: India is a diverse market as far as vernacular publishing
or regional publishing is concerned. How is this market going to
explode in the future in the digital era.

Leonard: I think the constraints that keep publishers of Indian
language books from embracing digital content is technical – an
absence of fonts that can be rendered on devices and devices
themselves that do not or cannot display Indic fonts. There might also
be financial constraints in that readers might not be able to afford
eReaders but that is pure conjecture and I have no evidence to support
that.

YourStory: Copyright issues and proliferation of books on the
pavement. Or is it more to it?

Leonard: It is more than just books on the pavement. I am not sure
publishers are too bothered about it because it only goes to show that
the book is popular enough to be pirated. Like imitation is the best
form of flattery. But there is more to this topic like parallel
import, the concept of territorial sales, the use of open access
knowledge itself. Still very fuzzy to many and needs clarity.

YourStory: Your thoughts on the recent trends in publishing.

Leonard: There is so much going on. And each move seems like a small
step in countering each issue. Like Penguin which has moved into
retail to counter the problem of inefficient supply chain mechanisms.
Worldwide too there is a lot happening that will ultimately affect
India. Like the issue of agency pricing.

YourStory: Who are your partners for the conference?

Leonard: British Council has helped us a lot in its capacity as

GOA'S AGRARIAN PAST
Victor Hugo Gomes

Victor Hugo Gomes, a restorer by profession, always had a fascination
for the various rituals and traditions that were an integral part of
his young days. When based in Lucknow as a painter, he joined a team
from M S University (Baroda) in researching tribal art and lifestyles
in various places in North India. On being offered a Lalit Kala
Academy (Goa) scholarship, he chose to study “Exper...imental
transitions in the world of art”. This subject covered the use of
different materials and processes in art over time. He furthered his
restoration techniques on joining a course in restoration and
conservation of art conducted by the Indian National Trust for Art and
Cultural Heritage (INTACH). On completion, Victor returned to Goa in
1991 to become the curator of the Museum of Christian Art that was
being set up at the Seminary of Rachol. During his tenure he became
aware that artefacts of artistic and historical value were being
neglected around the state. Traditional implements were being thrown
out or left to decay in many old Goan houses.

This focussed his enthusiasm for collecting items of cultural heritage
value, premised on the concern that the loss of hundreds of years of
accumulated wisdom in agrarian practices. The rich tradition of
implements, tolls, arts, crafts and the heritage of our ancestors —
would be irrevocable.

Victor Hugo Gomes is the creator, curator and owner of Goa Chitra — an
ethnographic museum in Benaulim, Goa, showcasing traditional Goan
farming implements and other Goan antiques.

[Goanet-News] NEWS: Raja again: Gave green nod to 169 mines in Goa (HT, New Delhi)

2011-09-23 Thread Frederick FN Noronha फ्रेडरिक नोरोन्या *فريدريك نورونيا
Raja again: Gave green nod to 169 mines in Goa
Snehal Rebello and Ketaki Ghoge, Hindustan Times
Panaji (Goa), September 23, 2011

Former telecom minister A Raja, who is now in Tihar jail in the 2G
spectrum case, had given environmental clearances for 169 mines in Goa
during his five-year stint as union environment minister. Documents
accessed by HT reveal that these clearances were given to private
companies between May 2004 and May 2009 by the ministry of environment
and forests (MoEF) to extract about 60 million tonne of iron ore
annually.

Many of the environment impact assessment (EIA) studies on the basis
of which the MoEF gave these clearances have proved to be inaccurate,
not reflecting the actual position on the ground, HT has learnt.

For instance, EIA reports submitted by a mining firm at Sancordem did
not even mention river Ragado, which flows for 7 km through the
village. Similarly, clearances were granted despite mining companies
not submitting information on biodiversity or the accurate distance of
their mines from water bodies and wildlife sanctuaries.

"Raja's tenure as environment minister was the beginning of the phase
of growth of mineral exploitation and of new projects. But it's also
the biggest shame on India's environment history because of bad
processes and corruption," said Sunita Narain, director, Centre for
Science and Environment (CSE), New Delhi, who has studied illegal
mining in Goa.

On Thursday, the CSE released a report on environmental clearances
given for various projects between 2007 and 2011. The report said 35
clearances were given to mining projects in Goa during this period.

After Jairam Ramesh took over the environment ministry from Raja in
June 2009, a moratorium was imposed on new mining projects in February
2010.

The Goa assembly's public accounts committee (PAC), which is probing
the illegal mining scam in the state, is also reported to be looking
into possible environmental violations. PAC chairman  Manohar Parrikar
told HT that 25% of the iron ore extracted in the state had been mined
without environmental clearances.

On Thursday, HT had reported how illegal mining has cost the state at
least Rs 3,000 crore, though the figure could be as high as Rs 10,000
crore.

Claude Alvares, who heads non-governmental organisation Goa Foundation
that is spearheading the anti-mining campaign, said, "Raja’s tenure
coincided with the Chinese boom in 2005 (when that country started
buying even low-grade ore with iron content as low as 52%). Under
Raja, an environmental clearance became the easiest document to get."

At least three mines given clearances during Raja’s tenure were
allowed to operate within just 200 metres of the Salaulim reservoir
that provides water to nearly half of Goa’s population.

Also, in one year alone, between 2007 and 2008, the union ministry
granted clearances to 17 mines within the Netravali Wildlife Sanctuary
in Sanguem taluka. This was done even though a Supreme Court order of
2000 said that no mine would be allowed to operate inside wildlife
sanctuaries. None of the 17 mines is operational now as the matter is
before the Supreme Court.

[Goanet-News] The Goa Media in the 1960s (an interview with Prof. Ave Cleto Afonso)

2011-09-24 Thread Frederick FN Noronha फ्रेडरिक नोरोन्या *فريدريك نورونيا
The Goa Media in the 1960s (an interview with Prof. Ave Cleto Afonso)

We started off by asking Ave Cleto Afonso about how the media
was when he started -- with the Portuguese newspaper 'A Vida'
in 1964. He offered an update of the media just before that too.

Till 1961, the newspapers were censored. After that, the
first newspapers without censorship were an "altogether
different experience". In 1961, all the major papers were in
Portuguese. Three in Panjim -- Heraldo, O Herald (today's
English-language Herald) and the eveninger Diario de Noite.
In Margao, A Vida and Diario de Goa.

At that time, the Marathi press didn't have any daily
publication. This situation continued for awhile after 1961.

Heraldo closed down immediately, after its editor had some
differences with the new administration. O Heraldo continued,
Diario de Noite continued for a couple of years more, A Vida
continued till May 1967 -- till after the Opinion Poll.

In this discussion:

* The nature of the Portuguese papers in Goa.
* How did low literacy and censorship affect the Goa Press.
* Why censorship could not break the independent journalist.
* Caste, class and communalism in the Goan media.
* The pressures on Portuguese papers in Liberated Goa.
* The politics of dissent in Salazar's Goa, and its impact.
* How newspapers then compare with the media now.

"The Portuguese newspapers (after Liberation) and also those
working in those papers had the handicap of having to prove
their nationalistic credentials almost at every point of
time," says Afonso, one of the "youngsters" in the media in
the Goa of the 1960s.

But some fell to the wayside, simply because they couldn't
keep up with the times, feels this journalist from the
sixties-turned-academic who taught Philosophy at Dhempe
College in Miramar since the 1970s till some time back.

A number of journalists from the 1960s are also remembered.

[Goanet-News] Mickey Correa: 1913-2011: It's silence for the sultan of swing

2011-09-24 Thread Frederick FN Noronha * फ्रेडरिक नोरोन्या *فريدريك نورونيا
Mickey Correa: 1913-2011

It’s silence for the sultan of swing

Meher Marfatia pays tribute to the magic that India's lone surviving
jazzman wrought as bandleader

Posted On Friday, September 23, 2011 at 02:08:00 AM

He would have turned 98 on Monday, September 26th. But the music has
stilled for Mickey Correa just two years short of the century he so
wanted to celebrate - "like Sachin Tendulkar", he quipped to students
he so brilliantly taught to hit just-right chords and riffs.

To some of us it was incredible privilege: sitting in an apartment at
Esperanca building in Colaba across the man who spoke lightly of
jamming with Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Paul Desmond, Jack
Teagarden and Dave Brubeck. An astounding repository of the swing age,
Correa held an international record. Resident bandleader at the Taj
Mahal Hotel for 21 seasons (1939-1960), his was an unbroken run
rivalled only by year-ahead Carroll Gibbons of The Savoy, London.

His face a picture of rapt attention mixed with passion, Correa's
fingers flew, till a few weeks ago, over his Schiedmayer piano. To
listen to him and his wife Doreen share anecdotal music memories was
to sniff a pulsating, sensuous night air from the 1930s - glory years
ushering in the swing culture at prime hotels, theatres and jazz halls
of Bombay, Calcutta, Delhi and Lahore.

Born in Mombasa in 1913, Correa was transported from East African soil
to Moira in Goa. At church school in this ancestral village, he learnt
to sing a cappella and play violin. He put bow to violin publicly for
elder brother Alex's group, The Correa Optimists Band in Karachi.
Innate musical intelligence ensured he also adeptly taught himself the
piano, clarinet, guitar, banjo and accordion.

The tug of Bombay proved strong enough to record baritone sax strains
with All India Radio here in 1936. Right off where the Taj stands,
Green's Hotel was another venue wooing jazz fans. The morning after he
performed here with Theodore and His Boys, a paper pronounced: "In
young Correa the Theodore blowers have an asset, a saxophonist of high
merit and definite attraction." He got his break deputizing for King
Oliver's clarinetist, Rudy Jackson, in Weatherford's orchestra at the
Taj. Next, Afro American Roy Butler and cornet genius Cricket Smith
pieced together ensembles, which Correa often led.

With a reputation for pacing every manner of musician through the
works, classical to cabaret, Correa found himself in the plum position
of being the first Indian offered to form an orchestra with
independent charge. His orchestra roped in the cream of players,
including Chic Chocolate, George Pacheco, Johnny Baptist, Eddie
Tavares and Lester Weeks and gave Bombay its first swing music show on
September 15, 1948.

A little-known fact involves a flowing proficiency with which
versatile Correa played classic chords. First clarinet player for no
less than Yehudi Menuhin's concerts, he performed with the Bombay
Symphony Orchestra under Belgian Jules Craen and Mehli Mehta,
conductor Zubin Mehta's father. It was easy for him to render Mozart
quintets and Beethoven trios with consummate mastery.

The Correas nurtured the prodigious musical genes of three children,
Patricia, Christine and Marc. Exceptional singers all, Christine has
earned individual stripes as a cutting-edge musician in New York. Her
mother treasures details of early journeys with her feted father… When
Correa rubbed shoulders with bandleaders in London and Paris where he
performed with two orchestras, played for comedian Danny Kaye and
Hollywood greats Errol Flynn and William Holden…

The tribute encores will forever soar. RIP maestro.

[Goanet-News] SUNDAY EVENING: Choral ensemble to enthral Goan audience once again

Choral ensemble to enthral Goan audience once again

TNN | Sep 24, 2011, 08.17AM IST

PANAJI: The magic of choral music is set to enthral Goa once again.
The Stuti Ensemble is set to hit concert halls this weekend and next
for a series of back-to-back free concerts. They will perform at
Maquinez Palace this Sunday and at Clube Harmonia the following
Saturday.

For this 25-member choir, which performs surprisingly rarely for its
stature and girth, these concerts will mark just the 6th and 7th live
performance in nearly two years of existence.

The choir, oft-lauded for their interpretation and presentation of
religious music, is now diversifying its repertoire to include several
other genres including western classical and negro spiritual.

The man at the centre of this transformation is its new conductor,
Miguel Cotta, who is the third person after Nauzer Daruwalla and Nigel
Dixon to don the baton for the choir.

The choir will share the stage with the MLS Baroque ensemble led by
violinist Ashley Rego, which will also play its own repertoire apart
from the accompaniment it will provide the choir, which will perform
most of its songs in Acapella mode. Pearl Viegas, a pianist, will
accompany the choir for a few songs.

The Stuti choral ensemble is the brainchild of Fr Eufemiano Miranda, a
tireless promoter of the classical and choral genres, who is also the
parish priest of Chicalim. When he was the 'padre vicar' of the St
Inez Church, he started the choir, in 2009, with the sole aim of
reviving the great choral tradition. Fr Miranda, who is one of the
singers, is still the force behind the choir. Over the years, though,
conductors have come and gone, perhaps the reason for the choir's very
few performances, mainly in churches and small venues in a few
villages around Goa.

However, that's about to change. Immediately on the agenda is a
Christmas festival in Bangalore for which the choir has been specially
invited. Not surprising, considering the expanded repertoire includes
works of the great masters such as Beethoven, Verdi, Haydn and Handel,
as well as local maestros such as Fr Camilo Xavier and Fr Lourdino
Baretto.

Stuti's concerts are always free, and are funded by a bunch of
well-wishers called 'Friends of Stuti Choral Ensemble'. The members of
the choir itself are a mixed lot, from college-going students to
pensioners, all of whom make it a point to attend practices on Mondays
and Wednesdays; "however, a little more discipline would be good",
says Cotta, who seems hell-bent on leading the choir to greater
heights.

Plans for the future include 'at least two concerts a year', says
Cotta. Musically, he wants to expand the repertoire to include more
Portuguese and Konkani songs, in an attempt to fuse choral music with
local culture.

Also on the agenda is a more disciplined concert; the decision is as
unanimous as their voices. "the concert will start at 6:30 pm, whether
the chief guest is there or not".

Incidentally, Stuti was formed in 2009, when some music lovers from
Panjim, St Inez and neighbouring areas, professionals in varied fields
but motivated by a deep love for music, came together to "do something
for our beautiful Goa through choral music". It is named after the
Konkani word for *praise*.

In 2009-10, Studi performed in Saligao, Chinchinim, Aldona, Margao,
Porvorim and Panjim under the direction of Nauzer Daruwalla and Nigel
Dixon. It is entirely a labour of love. Members meet every Monday and
Wednesday at the Kala Academy's Rehearsal Hall from 6.30 pm to 8 pm.

This was the first concert for Stuti in the year 2011. According to
information released here, it will be performing in Bangalore on
December 15, 2011, in a Christmas Music Festival being organised by
the *Deccan Herald*, alongside Mumbai's famed Paranjoti Choir, and

This ad was in the papers today, and it was sad to learn of the death of a
Goanetter. Delia would phone with her feedback to the posts via Goanet. The
ad reads:

QUOTE

Lord we are coming home -- Adelia (Delia) Neomisia d'Albuquerque. Died on
October 10th, 2011, Virginia, USA (Anjuna) and Cynthia Evelyn
d'Albuquerque. Died on October 28, 2011 Anjuna/Parra (Canca).

Happy are those who always smiled. But left us so suddenly without saying
goodbye.

Spinster loving daughters of late Alexander and late Clementine
d'Albuquerque, sisters of late Sr Zena (Carmelite Order), and late Amyot
(Toto of Tanzania). Delia tragically passed away on October 10th, 2011, at
her home in Virginia, and Cynthia went through a cardiogenic shock over her
sister's death, and passed away peacefully on October 28th, 2011. Beloved
cousins of Augusto, late Tony & Maria, Jennifer-Jane, Henrika, Cheryl-Anne,
Susan & Darryl.

UNQUOTE

Dear all:

Bookworm [http://goabookworm.wordpress.com/] is a very innovative
children's library, run in Santa Inez, Panjim, by Sujata and Elaine (and
team). Of late, it has run into all kinds of problems, a decline in
membership and difficulties in finding a proper premises where it can carry
on its work unhindered

Question: could we as a group (or some of us, as individuals) do anything
to help the idea grow? We would not be doing a favour to Bookworm, but to
society which needs such ventures so badly In addition, we would be
doing something a great favour in terms of building the reading habit among
the young. And that is what all writers want!

Just a thought. FN

[Goanet-News] AUDIO-ENGLISH/KONKANI: Some campaign Issues from Goa

2011-11-06 Thread Frederick FN Noronha * फ्रेडरिक नोरोन्या *فريدريك نورونيا
http://www.archive.org/details/GoaCampaignIssues

Campaigners from Goa talk about the issues wrecking this former
Portuguese colony -- from mining to real estate to racketeering over
land and plain politial corruption right at the village level
itself...

This audio recording starts with the voice in English of the CNN-IBN
hard-hitting programme on the impact of mining on interior Goa, an
issue long, long neglected by the media across the nation (and in Goa
too). Eg: 150-large mines operating withing 10 kms of a wildlife
sanctuary.

Next, the programme shifts over mainly to Konkani.
Domnic of Saligao talks of the situation in Goa, and
castigates fellow villagers for not being vigilant over
the situation. "In our village, a builders' lobby has been
foistered. This is of no benefit to our village whatsoever,"
he says. He talks about political corruption and sell-outs
at the grassroots and the frailities of the supposedly
  "democratic" planning system.

This audio is in spoken Konkani, with some different variants of it
being employed. Others who spoke at the Pilerne Citizens' Forum
president Prakash Bandodkar (on panchayat corruption, urban planning
dubious decisions), George from Loutolim, Edwin from Verem (who
mentioned three successes by the villagers), advocate Yatish Naik,
among others. Fr Bismark Dias (not recorded) was to speak later. "We
are not leaders. We are not politicians. If you can hear our issues,
that's enough," Naik put it.

From: Chryselle D'Silva Dias

Subject: Suzuki violin classes for children aged 2 1/2 years onwards

You may have heard of the Suzuki method which has been very successful
worldwide in introducing children as young as two to an instrument.
The Suzuki Method is based on the principle that all children possess
ability and that this ability can be developed and enhanced through a
nurturing environment.

In Goa, Winston Collaco is the only Suzuki-accredited teacher. Winston
is the teacher for the children in our music project at Hamara School
(www.childsplayindia.org) and he also teaches privately in Margao. His
youngest pupil is two and a half years old.

We are delighted to be introducing Suzuki Violin classes for young
children in the Panjim area. If this sounds of interest to you and
your child, please come for a meeting with Winston on Saturday, 19
November at 5 pm, at our house (Casa da Moeda, Near Head Post Office,
Panjim). At the meeting, Winston will explain what the Suzuki method
is all about, have a demo with the kids and you will have a chance to
see and discuss things with him before you commit for lessons. This is
just an exploratory session and there are no charges involved.

Classes will begin in December and will go ahead even if one or two
children are interested.

Please forward this to friends / parents who might be interested. If
Margao is more convenient for you, please feel free to ask me for
Winston's contact details.

See you on the 19th :)
Regards,
Chryselle

In today's Herald (Sunday, Nov 20, 2011):

A nobel laureate: Laureate Lending Library alias Confidant [in Margao, Goa]
will be completing 40 years of its existence next year. With 20,000 plus
books and 8210 life memberships, Confidant still lives on. Walburg
Verissimo Coutinho gets nostalgic with Bharati Pawaskar. Quote: "I had
newly started a business of lending furniture to those officers who were in
Goa for a short duration during the early 70s. Many of my clients who took
furniture on rent for two or three years had various kinds of friendly
requests. Most of them inquired if there were books to lend too. They kept
asking me till I decided I must start a library for them. So I made a trip
to Mumbai and bought the latest releases. Confidant's Laureate Lending
Library was born in 1972. My friendly clients became my initial
founder-members. Soon locals poured in too, as this was the first library
in the whole of South Goa that offered English books," says Walburg
Coutinho. Unquote. Pg 8

The reading habit (by Kurt Bento, Bento at the Tinto, Pg 10): "Here's an
experiment, find out how many bookstores and libraries exist where you
stay, ask around and figure out how many youth you know who read on a
regular basis, be it daily, weekly or monthly. Life has moved beyond
newspapers, books and now the internet is solely used for networking an
ddownloading movies and music. Today, we may not have a chance to read a
book a day but many like me do our fair share of reading online"

More info
In this age of fierce globalization it is high time that we formulate
'The Indian Film Theory', a theory that informs the films that Gaston
Roberge calls Indian folk-movies, seen and enjoyed more than once by
millions of Indians over a long period of time. Roberge will discuss
the reasons why that theory has not been formulated so far, the main
reason being the class mentality. He proposes a pedagogy of the media
oppressed comprising seven steps of self-education for liberation.

Fr. Gaston Roberge SJ is an acclaimed media critic and film scholar.
Having pursued an MA in Theatre Art (Film), University of California
at Los Angeles (UCLA), Fr Roberge, in collaboration with Satyajit Ray,
founded the Chitrabani — the only independent film library in Kolkata.
He has authored several books and contributed with many articles to
different publications on cinema. His book Communication Cinema
Development: From Morosity to Hope won the National Award (special
mention) at the 46th National Film Festival of India in 1999. Fr
Gaston Roberge SJ continues to be senior most faculty member at the
Department of Mass Communication and Videography at St. Xavier’s
College, Kolkata. He is one of the pioneers who initiated, cultivated
and nurtured the film academia in this country.

2011-11-26 Thread Frederick FN Noronha * फ्रेडरिक नोरोन्या *فريدريك نورونيا
Between St Xavier’s College and Metro Cinema is a Grade-III heritage
structure known
as Jer Mahal. A cluster of six buildings and an annexe, it represents
the finest example
of a whole style of vernacular Indian architecture. It has even been
called ‘Bombay’s
most beautiful chawl’.
A Goan cultural hub, Jer Mahal accommodates 50 Goan clubs on its
premises at Dhobi
Talao. These clubs have been around for over a century; the oldest one
can be traced
back to 1857. Each floor accommodates 3 to 4 clubs, along with a
single kitchen and
a bathroom. Today, the clubs are characterised by broken walls,
protruding cable wires
and worn out arches.

[Goanet-News] LINK: An early Goan lithographer in Bombay... Jose M Gonsalves

2011-11-27 Thread Frederick FN Noronha * फ्रेडरिक नोरोन्या *فريدريك نورونيا
Lithograph of the Marine Battalion at the Esplanade by Jose M.
Gonsalves (fl. 1826-c.1842). Plate 4 from his 'Lithographic Views of
Bombay' published in Bombay in 1826. Gonsalves, thought to be of Goan
origin, was one of the first artists to practice lithography in Bombay
and specialised in topographical views of the city. In 1772, the
English feared an attack on Bombay by the French and cleared a
semi-circular area of land around the fort to provide a clear line of
fire. This area was known as the Esplanade. In the southern section of
this area, there was a parade ground known as Marine Lines. This view
shows a battalion soldiers on parade with military bungalows in the
background.

[Goanet-News] Goa and the Gramophone

2011-12-05 Thread Frederick FN Noronha फ्रेडरिक नोरोन्या *فريدريك نورونيا
Goa and the Gramophone

India almost missed the hallowed Gramophone at the 54th Grammys this
year. Not a single Indian artiste or one of Indian origin living
abroad has been nominated. There is, but one desi connection, even
though it may not be the proudest moment for Indian music. London folk
outfit, Mumford and Sons’ song, The Cave, from the album Sigh No More
(Universal Music), has been nominated in the ‘Record of the Year’
category. It was shot in the streets of Goa with four Goan musicians
dressed in blue brass band uniforms. The video begins with the quartet
that has Marcus Mumford, Ben Lovett, Country Winston and Ted Dwane,
giving their instruments to the local musicians next to a quaint local
beach, after which they ride the narrow streets of Goa on four
scooters.

The song begins with a chamber folk feel, as four reedy voices chime
above a strong instrumentation. After the slightly ambiguous start,
the vocals soar up by way of harmonies, apart from the interesting
horn arrangements, to reach a frenzy over the banjo and trombone as
the Goan musicians join in (only in the video). Blending inner
brooding with lyrical spirituality, the song, with an ethereal
four-part harmony, works well. With aggressive lyrics, the album, that
is being pitted as a strong contender, has been nominated alongside
this season’s favourites like Adele, Bon Iver, Bruno Mars and Katy
Perry.

[Goanet-News] LONDON: Talk: "From Invisibility to Visibility: Africans in Portuguese Space" (Dec 16)

2011-12-06 Thread Frederick FN Noronha * फ्रेडरिक नोरोन्या *فريدريك نورونيا

Talk: "From Invisibility to Visibility: Africans in Portuguese Space"

"From Invisibility to Visibility: Africans in Portuguese Space", by
Shihan de Silva, author of  'African Identity in Asia' and 'The
Portuguese in the East'

African movement to Asia has gone on for centuries and many migrants
have assimilated with the local populations. Within historical
documents, Africans become conspicuous through their  military role.
Moreover, there are Afro-Asian communities today, separated by vast
distances and hidden in the villages and forests of Asia.

Through their vibrant forms of music and lyrics still in Portuguese,
they emerge from obscurity. Concentrating on Africans who moved within
Portuguese space in India, Sri Lanka, Macau, Timor, this presentation
will highlight the way in which the migratory process took place and
affected their lives.

Dr Shihan de Silva is a Senior Fellow at the Institute of Commonwealth
Studies (University of London) and a member of the UNESCO
International Scientific Committee (Paris)

Friday 16th December 2011 | Canning House, 2 Belgrave Square, London

[Initial reports put the deaths at 15. The number of bodies recovered
by late Saturday was 7. But it is not clear if more persons are still
missing...]

The uploader (selvinaabraham) of these videos, who was at the venue,
