[google-appengine] GAE BigQuery

2012-10-15 Thread Richard Watson
One of the issues of the datastore is a lack of SQL-like aggregates, or
easy ad-hoc queries in general. This adds a lot of cost to reporting,
dashboards, etc. Is BigQuery the default choice for this type of work,
now? For those who have used it, what kinds of things should we watch out
for? What types of result do you cache back in the datastore, or do you
just run all that from BigQuery?

I don't personally believe there exist a default in this kind of
work without giving any specifics but you should definitely try it. If
you haven't seen it, here's a recent post related to your questions.
You might find some answers there:

The only feature that's not there and I'd love to see it being
implemented, is existing rows/data updates. Currently you can only
append to existing table. Other than that, BigQuery is really awesome
for all sorts of adhoc data analysis, dashboards, charts, etc.

[google-appengine] unable to configure SSL to my custom domain in both SNI and VIP

2012-10-15 Thread taelimoh
I went through all the steps described here:
http://support.google.com/a/bin/answer.py?hl=enanswer=2644386

- Certificate uploaded,

- billing enabled,

- CNAME changed.

I tried both SNI and VIP and all I'm getting is this error page.

503. That’s an error.

The service you requested is not available at this time.

Service error -27. That’s all we know.

After going over GAE's SSL instruction several times and searching through
google for a while

I am now out of guesses.

Any insight will be appreciated.

Re: [google-appengine] Billed instance hours 3x dashboard instance hours

2012-10-15 Thread Takashi Matsuo
Hi Christian,

Sorry we're still investigating. However, I'm fairly certain that this is a
display bug of billing instance graph rather than overcharging, because the
max idle instance settings is set to automatic for this app, which means
the number of total instances should be the same as the number of billed
instances.

Of course, this display bug still sucks, but at least we don't think it's
overcharging issue.

Also, if you still see higher bills than before, I think it's worth
investigating why, but this is another issue in my perspective. Do you
still see any unreasonable higher bills?

Re: [google-appengine] Billed instance hours 3x dashboard instance hours

2012-10-15 Thread c h
Thanks for the update.

Yes, i do see unreasonably high bills. starting on the day that i first
contacted google we changed our app to stop using appstats, and saw a
significant decrease in the number of instance hours used both in the graph
and in the daily totals from the dashboard. we were shocked to find that
when we were billed we were still being billed almost exactly the same
number of instance hours as before.

We are still seeing a 50-70% increase from the number of frontend instance
hours reported on our dashboard as we approach midnight PDT to what shows
in the daily bill.

The other difficulty stems from the simple fact that Google is not charging
me based on the services i actually use. All data that i have access to
says I'm using instance hours at one rate, and I'm being charged for some
phantom hours. Not only is this bad customer service, but in most places
it is against the law. If there is indeed a bug in the system (and bugs do
happen), we need either full disclosure of the bug so that we can budget
our costs appropriately, or we need to be charged at a rate that matches
the usage that is being reported to us.

thanks,

christian

I have an object that fires a callback after a put. The callback then fires

[google-appengine] javax.servlet.UnavailableException: Initialization failed after High Replication Datastore Migration in Google App Engine app

2012-10-15 Thread Sebastiano Armeli Battana

Hi there,

I just migrated my GAE app to the High Replication Datastore, but it seems
I'm getting an initialization error. My app is using Maven (Java) and it is
not leveraging on the DataStore (just using a couple of controllers and
views using Apache Tiles).

To migrate, I duplicated myapp, I launched

/Applications/appengine-java-sdk-1.7.2.1/bin/appcfg.sh update ./src/main/webapp/

after modifying the appengine-web.xml file (changing the id to
'myapp-hrd'), and I used the migration tool to migrate to myapp-hrd.

I tried to redeploy the app using the previous command, but I'm getting a
500 error in the front-end. Looking at the logs, I get:

I use the UrlRewriteFilter, and its dependency is declared in my POM file.
Also if I launch my app, using

I can clearly see my app working.

Please help on that, it is quite urgent

Cheers,

[google-appengine] Error deploying Maven app on migrated Google App Engine

2012-10-15 Thread Sebastiano Armeli Battana

Hi there,

After I migrated my app (Java) onto the High Replication DataStore, I was
trying to deploy it using the command I used to adopt before for deployment

mvn test gae:deploy

but now I'm getting this kind of error:

Oct 16, 2012 7:03:04 AM org.apache.jasper.JspC processFile
INFO: Built File: /error.jsp
Oct 16, 2012 7:03:05 AM org.apache.jasper.JspC processFile
INFO: Built File: /WEB-INF/tiles/contact-sidebar.jsp

Any help on this one?

Cheers,

Sebastiano

*Wha*t* is the meaning of 'Search API now has a string maximum length limit
of 2000 characters'? Is that* mean search API can only index text/string up
to 2000 characters? What will happen when I feed a string with 2001
characters in Java SDK? throw exception or search API will ignore
characters since index 2000? I've visited the 'Overview' and 'Java
Reference' and see
https://developers.google.com/appengine/docs/java/javadoc/com/google/appengine/api/search/checkers/FieldChecker#MAXIMUM_TEXT_LENGTH

it stated 1048576 bytes, this means it is updated from 1048576 to 2000?
Thanks.

Re: [google-appengine] Billed instance hours 3x dashboard instance hours

2012-10-15 Thread c h
looking again at my instances graph, over the weekend i would have had to
have 37-40 instances on all day to run up the number of instance hours i
was billed for, but even unbilled instances in the graph is not that high
(it peaks there, but it is not sustained that high). we need to have this
fixed ASAP so that we can predict our costs and understand how app changes
change our cost.

thanks,

christian

 Thanks for the update.

Yes, i do see unreasonably high bills. starting on the day that i first
contacted google we changed our app to stop using appstats, and saw a
significant decrease in the number of instance hours used both in the graph
and in the daily totals from the dashboard. we were shocked to find that
when we were billed we were still being billed almost exactly the same
number of instance hours as before.

We are still seeing a 50-70% increase from the number of frontend instance
hours reported on our dashboard as we approach midnight PDT to what shows
 in the daily bill.

The other difficulty stems from the simple fact that Google is not
charging me based on the services i actually use. All data that i have
access to says I'm using instance hours at one rate, and I'm being charged
for some phantom hours. Not only is this bad customer service, but in most
places it is against the law. If there is indeed a bug in the system (and
bugs do happen), we need either full disclosure of the bug so that we can
budget our costs appropriately, or we need to be charged at a rate that
matches the usage that is being reported to us.

 thanks,

 christian

 Hi Christian,

Sorry we're still investigating. However, I'm fairly certain that this is
a display bug of billing instance graph rather than overcharging, because
the max idle instance settings is set to automatic for this app, which
means the number of total instances should be the same as the number of
 billed instances.

Of course, this display bug still sucks, but at least we don't think it's
 overcharging issue.

Also, if you still see higher bills than before, I think it's worth
investigating why, but this is another issue in my perspective. Do you
still see any unreasonable higher bills?
