[google-appengine] Scheduled maintenance read-only downtime

2011-04-05 Thread Wesley C (Google)
NOTICE: users of the high replication (HR) datastore users are
unaffected and do not have maintenance, read-only, nor downtime
periods so you can effectively disregard this post.

From time-to-time, we have to perform scheduled maintenance on App
Engine systems. During these times, the datastore will be placed into
read-only mode and memcache will be flushed. It is recommended that
critical portions of your application that depend on the datastore
should make use of the Capabilities API to detect and recover
gracefully during read-only periods.

Documentation describing the capabilities API can be found here:

Python: http://code.google.com/appengine/docs/python/howto/maintenance.html
Java: http://code.google.com/appengine/docs/java/howto/maintenance.html

As mentioned at the top of this message, there will be no downtime for
developers whose applications use the HR datastore. You can read more
about this service here:

http://googleappengine.blogspot.com/2011/01/announcing-high-replication-datastore.html

Developers can add/view the scheduled maintenance calendar using this
link (look for the + in the lower-hand corner to add the calendar):

https://www.google.com/calendar/b/0/embed?src=4chlpo92ci2f54c2u21shbj...@group.calendar.google.com

Developers can also subscribe to the same scheduled maintenance
Google Calendar using this address:

4chlpo92ci2f54c2u21shbj...@group.calendar.google.com

Most importantly, sign up to receive notices from the App Engine
Downtime Notify Group as to these maintenance periods!!

-The Google App Engine team

[google-appengine] Scheduled Maintenance?

Have I got my timezones wrong, or is the scheduled maintenance not
happening? According to my calculations it should have started half an

[google-appengine] Scheduled Maintenance timing

2009-06-05 Thread davew

Regarding the scheduled maintenance on June 10th (Wednesday) at 4 PM
Pacific Time. Would it be possible to have this in the early
mornings, or late evenings? During off-peek hours? 4pm PST is prime
evening usage time on the East coast, and is kids getting online after
school on the West coast. It's one of the worst hours of the day to
have down-time. Most web hosting companies do maintenance after
midnight.. Now that App Engine is charging it would be great to have
similar times for maintenance.

Thanks

-Dave

[google-appengine] scheduled maintenance

2009-03-02 Thread Ben Nevile

Hi GAE team,

I'm writing to express frustration about the scheduled maintenances of
March 2 and March 9. I'm using GAE to host several time-dependent
games being played by tens of thousands of people. Having datastore
writes unavailable for 30 minutes during the peak traffic time is
frustrating and expensive. The cost to my small business will be
significant.

I acknowledge that with a globally distributed service every hour of
the day is equally bad. I also acknowledge that downtime is a
statistical inevitability. However I would like to believe that
*scheduled* downtime is not inevitable. There must be a way for a
company with Google's resources and talent to upgrade server hardware
without taking the entire system offline for up to 30 minutes.

As a customer who's investing considerably in this platform, I'd
appreciate some insight into the mechanics of these scheduled
maintenance decisions. How often can we expect these outages? If I
were a provider of a social service based around baseball, for
instance, what recourse would I have if Google decided to perform a
scheduled maintenance during the seventh game of the World Series?

Ben

[google-appengine] Scheduled maintenance

2009-02-28 Thread Greg

I'm a bit put out by the announcement of scheduled maintenence - for
those that haven't heard, both the datastore and memcache will be
offline for up to 30 minutes at 6pm EST on March 2 and March 9.

1. Extent. Because both datastore and memcache are out, we are left
with no persistent storage options. Most non-trivial applications will
not work.

2. Timing. 6pm EST is 3pm in New Zealand - primetime for my app. I
know I live in a small country in the middle of the Pacific, and I'm
sure it was chosen as the quietest time, but I'd have been much
happier if it happened on a Sunday, not a Tuesday.

The result will be up to 30 mins (I hope everything goes well and it
is shorter) of This app is down for scheduled maintenence that WILL
cost me customers - the chances are very good that prospects will hit
the site during these times.

So Google, please consider doing this on a Saturday/Sunday in the
furture.
