R: [GRASS-dev] Re: WinGRASS-6.3.0 Release Package

2008-04-25 Thread Marco Pasetti
Hi Markus,

I was writing to you :-)

Only two things:
1. The GRASS_MSYS_Environment.zip disappeared from the WinGRASS Web Page
2. The SVN_Win32.zip should be extracted to the SVN root. It could be stay
also in the WinGRASS Web Page, but I didn't provide a README file for it,
and I would not, since it contains only developers information on how to
prepare a WinGRASS release intaller (and a complete related README.html file
is already contained in the zipped Win32 folder)

Regards,

Marco

I suppose that a shell script for starting Grass is missing.

[GRASS-dev] GSoC, Reimplementing v.buffer and adding features

2008-04-25 Thread Росен Матев
Hello everyone,

My name is Rosen Matev, and I'm from Bulgaria. I have been selected to
participate in GSoC this summer. My major task will be to rewrite the
broken v.buffer module. While writing I will incorporate some nice new
features like variable buffer width and elliptical buffers. My
seconday task will be to implement "surface" buffer functionality. It
will create buffers by measuring distances on surface of the terrain,
rather than projected distances. Everyone interested can read the
abstract here:
http://code.google.com/soc/2008/osgeo/appinfo.html?csaid=BB6EFE9C7844B517
I may send you the entire proposal if you want.
I'm glad that I'll be working with the GRASS community and I hope we
will all benefit from GSoC 2008.

Regards,
Rosen Matev

for correctness this should be updated from GRASS 5 -> GRASS 6 vector

Looking forward to the new buffer implementation! It has been indeed
quite a while since it has worked properly. Elliptical buffers will come
in handy I'm pretty sure.

I hope you'll have fun working on it!

The help page for the wxgrass gui seems to be missing from 'Help/Grass GIS
GUI Help'. A help page similar to grass-6.4.svn/docs/html/index.html
opens, with the 'Manual Sections' omitted. But the help specific the the
buttons and tools on the wxgui interface is nowhere to be found from this
 page.

Eric,

to create the .deb files you can use checkinstall. In the end of the
compiling process, instead of "make install" you do a "checkinstall"
and create the deb file (or rpm, or other).

Yes, that is an intermediate solution, but I'd rather see real .deb
packages, i.e. with all the debian-related patches included in terms of
paths and other issues.

It shouldn't be too hard since everything exists in the DebianGIS
repository, it just takes a bit of time to do it...and I haven't found
the time, yet.

What is involved in creating a package? I'll be updating to Heron sometime

creating 'make bindist', and placing the tarfile on an ftp site?

Depends on the definition of "near". It will probably take me another
month: I have tons of work now and I would like to try out amd64
 version.

Comment (by mlennert):

 1. is not limited to WinGRASS, but 2+3 are (although the limit between the
fields is not very easily visible either, depending on the screen, but it
is not nearly as bad as in winGRASS).

We have GRASS statistics available up to March here:
http://www.osgeo.org/awstats/awstats.pl?config=grass

Due to the server migration onto telascience.org infrastructure
I/we/someone has to setup awstats on grass.osgeo.org. Maybe me
with help from Martin? Then we move the stats over and will
have the full picture from 2002 ongoing!
