[GRASS-dev] New features provided by Nix
Hi people ! Recently, I had a pleasure to join GRASS Community Meeting in Prague and had a presentation about Nix [1] and potential benefits it can bring to a GRASS community. It was quite well received and now it is a real thing [2] (+ few more PRs). # What Nix can do for you ? 1. Create a full development environment by running single `nix develop` command 2. Run GRASS directly from a Git source code (from any branch, tag or checkout which contains nix files added in #3889) 3. A lot more # How to use it ? Please check out PR #3889 [1] description for the instructions. It is just about installing Nix and then you can start running some magic commands. There where some problems with inconsistency of datasets used with tests and also we need to find some good way how to visualize test results - we could use Vasek's test scripts and upload resulting HTMLs somewhere. 'native' packages are only packages, which are developed directly in Debian project, thus upstream is Debian and no revision is needed. GRASS is not native one. We should really move to Debian packaging done inside of DebianGIS [1] for final 7.0 version (Sebastiaan from DebianGIS in CC). I can provide some help for this. Debian builder can't execute 'svnversion' because it has no access to '.svn'
files and no 'svn' software is installed in build chroot. So this can be a
root of the problem.
Was there any significant change of version assignment between 6 and 7 ?
Anyway, it seems to be a packaging problem rather a problem in GRASS as I
originally expected.

You do not need to be administrator to create a recipe - it is
possible to create a recipe as a user outside of GRASS team (which
will be listed on GRASS page), which will place debs to creator's
personal repository instead of GRASS. The same is with builds - anyone
can request a build using recipe from GRASS, which will generate debs
to his personal repository.
But surely you have to be administrator to update recipe created by
Rashad.

Hi GRASS devs,
since I have been playing with building GRASS 7 for Ubuntu I have few little
improvement proposals:
1. Current GRASS package version suffix (revno) is currently made from Bazaar
import version, which is meaningless for users (for example:
7.0.0~ppa~2~revno-31311~ubuntu12.04.1 - 31311 is that Bazaar version)
I would propose to update to 0.4 version of Launchpad build recipes and change
{revno} variable to {svn-revno} which will be substituted by GRASS SVN
revision number rather than meaningless Bazaar import revision as it was now.
SVN version is much higher value than BZR, so no problems with upgrades
Also, I propose to update little bit version format to latest standards [1][2].
Proposed recipe:
# bzr-builder format 0.4 deb-version 7.0.0+1svn{svn-revno}
lp:grass/7.0
nest debianfiles lp:~grass/grass/grass70_release_debian debian
