it's more complicated there because it's needed to reproject the

Just tested it. Nice !

However, IIUC, it is not the same thing as zooming to the same view in two
maps, as here you adjust the maps automatically so that one fits right
next to the other, i.e. that there is a continuation from one map to the
other. But I cannot center on the same spot in both maps, or ?

I am not sure if you are talking about the 'swipe' mode (the original
one) or the 'mirror' mode (the new one).
Please see the screenshots on wiki page, I added one with the mirror mode.

The new mode is not tested much so if it is not working for you,
report me the problems.

I guess I must not have updated the code correctly. A new svn up and
make gives me the dropdown list I didn't see before. Now I get mirror
mode and it works as expected, thanks !

Maybe we should rename this to something that shows that it is a general

I clearly appreciate the work you put in this, but I think naming should
aim the use by users not the difficulty for developers to implement the
functionality ;-)

I don't want to launch a long discussion on this, and you're the
developer, but your great work has already got me dreaming about other
functionalities that might be nice to have in there:

- a query tool that when you click on a spot in one of the maps gives

- allow to display vector maps, not only raster (including one of each)

- a button that launches Michael's new histogram tool to directly show

Hi Anna,
you have implemented a great tool! I was able to visualize two space
time raster datasets with different temporal granularity (mixing year
and month) synchronously. :)
This is really cool.

Having such a great tool raises many wishes that could be implemented
in addition. :)
Here just a few of them:

* It would be great if vector time series are available to visulaize too
(as vector map list or space time vector datasets). So we can visualize
for example temperature maps and vector contours at the same
  time in the same frame?

* Having a legend for the raster maps would be very handy for comparison.
I am preparing a tool to set the color table for a space time raster datasets
computed from all registered maps. So the maps of a dataset would have
all the same color table representing the data range of the space
time raster dataset.

* A stepper would be great to step through the time series data
using the lowest temporal granularity of the visualized space time datasets

* Exporting animation as mp4 or similar :)

* Starting the animation tool from comand line

I have prepared some datasets which you can play with:
http://www-pool.math.tu-berlin.de/~soeren/tmp/

These datasets are derived form the ECAD project E-OBS gridded data[1].
Usage policy od ECAD data is available here [2].

You can simply import the datasets in a Lat/lon location using t.rast.import.

Soeren

Thanks to your temporal library, of course:)

Having such a great tool raises many wishes that could be implemented
 in addition. :)
Here just a few of them:

I've been thinking of these enhancements too. Some comments:

 * It would be great if vector time series are available to visulaize too
(as vector map list or space time vector datasets). So we can visualize
for example temperature maps and vector contours at the same
   time in the same frame?

Of course this would make sense. To implement this, there should be a
more sophisticated way to specify layers to render - this means to
write a simplified layer manager. Another problem is the rendering -
the current rendering system in GUI is too slow to load too many maps
(therefore I currently use r.out.ppm module to write to stdout so that
it is in memory and it is not written to disk).
I also thought about adding option to load ready images. It would be
useful when you create some map composition with d.vect.chart or
similar and then you could load it in the animation tool and
optionally provide the time information as a temporal dataset which
was used for creating the charts.

 * Having a legend for the raster maps would be very handy for comparison.
I am preparing a tool to set the color table for a space time raster
 datasets
computed from all registered maps. So the maps of a dataset would have
all the same color table representing the data range of the space
 time raster dataset.

I agree that legend is definitely useful.

 * A stepper would be great to step through the time series data
using the lowest temporal granularity of the visualized space time datasets

I guess you mean 'next/previous frame'. Now the slider enables to
change the frame by one time unit, for example, if granularity is 2
months, the next position is +1 month. I think this behavior is more
natural but we can discuss it more.

 * Exporting animation as mp4 or similar :)

The animation tool now provides export to image sequence. I am not
sure what should be done next - I can call an external program like
ffmpeg to create a video but someone else would like to use different
program or with different parameters and also I am not sure how these
things work on Windows.
Also it would be useful to convert the images directly (without saving
images on disk) by a python library but there are two problems -
PyMedia which seems to be dead and I can't find any other, and
secondly you need to install it.
There should be probably some general module in GRASS to export video
from images - now there is r.out.mpeg only for rasters and as far as I
remember it calls some external program too.
Therefore I think that for now it could be useful (at least for
someone) to get the animation as animated GIF (with the images2gif.py
script), although GIF has many disadvantages.
Correct me if I omitted any option.

 * Starting the animation tool from comand line

I will try to implement it. Maybe there will be only a limited
functionality available from the command line.

I have prepared some datasets which you can play with:
 http://www-pool.math.tu-berlin.de/~soeren/tmp/

Thank you very much, I will have a look.

Hi Anna

This looks like a very useful tool, and it works perfectly (running grass 7

If I may make a feature request. Would it be very difficult to implement an
option where rather then splitting the area between the two maps, the same
area is shown for both maps (i.e., mirrored maps). In that option, moving
one map would move the other map too. This makes it easier to see changes
between two maps in detail. In case my explanation isn't clear, a nice
example is the MIrrorMap plug-in for QGIS.

Seems clear to me. I added it to map swipe wiki page, you can edit it.
I remember someone on mailing list was asking about similar
functionality - synchronize display region extent of more Map Displays
- could it be what you mean?

Thanks for your interest,
Anna

I am also just asking... contributing code is unfortunately way out of
my league.

I am somewhat indifferent to whether synchronized display of multiple
maps would be a general feature of map display or part of the swipe
tool. I can imagine that it would be easier to make it initially part of
a separate tool, but I am no developer so I could be completely wrong.

I'm not sure that this should be part of the swipe tool. I'd rather
see this as a general feature of Map Displays, i.e. the option to
linked any number of Map Displays so that when you pan / zoom in one
the other(s) adjust automagically. Then again, I'm only the one
asking, not doing ... ;-)

Maybe it would be easier to develop a separate tool for this because
otherwise it would probably need some refactoring. Map Swipe was meant
for a different purpose and adding this new functionality would cause
some problems, for example what should it do with the slider?. I would
prefer to put this functionality to Map Displays because it seems
natural to me to use it there.

another online example of the idea here:
   http://joerichards.dev.openstreetmap.org/index-new.html

And IIRC if you look in the addons(?) repo for grass 6 you'll find a tool
developed to update the other frames or xmons + d.redraw as you moved
around the master display. Maybe just in the ML archives though, I
forget.

I guess either swipe or full clone with two mouse cursors will be better
for different people in different situations. Depends on the task. See
also the argyle/diamond r.mapcalc overlay trick in the GRASS Book vol.1
(not sure if it is in later editions too).

I would like to backport it soon, of course. Is there a chance someone
could test it on Windows first? (adding dev list)

Hi Mohammed,

This looks like a very useful tool. Perhaps a method to view and edit metadata
would be worth adding to the todo list?

Hi

I look more or less your work and I think you shall explain something:

- as I remember you first conception was graphical manager of
Grass-data. that what you presented it is new completely GUI conception
(very interesting) so what you plan. Completely new gui is rather
extensive work I guess.?

- what it you have presented: it are mockups (screens created in some
graphic programs, conception) or something working or almost working?

- second as I can see you use components of existing wx-gui. what is
will be: fork of existing wx-python gui or warper on existing
wx-python-gui? If the first I assume you plan to create alternative to
existing proposition with its own path of development int the future or
create warper which will be change with its base. It is important for
you. If it is warper you shall contact with wxgui developers to
synchronize your work (if they accept it).

- conception of integrated one gui looks interesting alternative. But
there are some ides which seems be difficult to implement, for example
browsing in tabs with possibilities of change mapsets and location
on-the-fly. So I assume your proposition will allow to browse maps from
different locations and mapsets in the same session. Did you
implemented it or it is only idea?

So first try to explain this and share your code, than we can discuss
regards
Jarek
