I want to make sure 2.24 works well first, then I will look at porting the fixes to master (and then back to 3.2 branch which should be trivial). The forward port should be mostly mechanic and not a lot of work, as there has not been a lot of conceptual changes to the gdk code. Makes sense, sounds promising. The one problematic thing for 3.x is the windows theme. That requires a completely different approach (to integrate with the css) which will require some new work. I see. Good to know, since the Windows theme is really a must have to have nicely integrated Gtk+ apps under Windows in our (AdaCore) experience. Thanks again for your work on this, much appreciated! I also had to add the 2.24 and 3.x columns in there so I have continued the previous status from all other bindings. GtkAda (Ada binding) supports 2.22 (and below). What do you mean by supports? Can I access to new API added in GTK+ 2.18 ( like GtkSpinner ) from a Ada program? To be more precise: current GtkAda binds everything in Gtk+ 2.16 and below, and is compatible with gtk+ up to 2.22 (we've found Gtk+ bugs in the process FWIW, see e.g. https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=633089). When the tabs are on the left, right, or bottom then the results are worse. Right, that's the main issue with this patch. Strange that I get not so good results even with top tabs. The bug #399253 is, I think, a separate issue.. that happens when the notebook receives expose events or something. As it is right now (without your patch), the tabs look pretty decent when they're first drawn or when the entire widget exposes.. but when it receives partial expose events it gets really screwed up. I tried looking into that, but didn't put much time into it. In the mean time, I've reverted the draw_extension function in msw_style.c to what it was in Gtk+ 2.8.20 to avoid this very annoying (to us) glitch, seems to be good enough for now, and certainly better than having bad redraws. I made a patch for the windows theme engine, that adjusts the clip rectangle of the notebook buttons a bit. Now it resambles the native windows look more closely, and it fixes the gap between the left edge of the page and the left edge of the button, when the leftmost page is selected. I do not really get the same effect applying your patch locally: instead I see the tab displayed one pixel too high. change of ABI in Gtk+ 2.10 on Win32
I see lots of changes like that in Gtk+ 2.10.7: #ifdef G_OS_WIN32 /* Reserve old names for DLL ABI backward compatibility */ #define gtk_accel_map_load gtk_accel_map_load_utf8 #define gtk_accel_map_save gtk_accel_map_save_utf8 #endif Which causes a huge number of undefined symbols when binding Gtk+ in another language (in my case, GtkAda). What's the proper approach here ? Where are the old symbols (without _utf8) defined ? I cannot change all these names, because that would mean having to maintain two very different list of symbols and files for unix and win32, so I find this change very intrusive and very incompatible. Why are there two functions for this? Why doesn't g_thread_init() call gtk_threads_init()? g_thread_init() is part of GLib and GLib doesn't know anything about GTK+. If gdk_thread_init() would call g_thread_init() you couldn't use GTK+ with another library or any code that needs to call g_thread_init() before gtk_init(). Doesn't sound like a good idea to me. That's misleading: gdk_thread_init would call g_thread_init if not already done (it already checks whether g_thread_init has been called), so that doesn't prevent you from calling g_thread_init before hand, possibly with different arguments. As for not being able to use GTK+ with another library that's not a valid argument: Gdk depends on glib already for many things, so the dependency is there, and can't be removed. Now, I'm sure there must be *some* valid reason for not doing the obvious, but I don't see what this reason would be (and don't see it documented as part of e.g. gdk_threads_init). Well, one thing is the vtable that g_thread_init() uses. But I think the Of course, there's a default value: NULL, that pretty much everyone uses (and that would be used in my proposal). main reason I did it the way I did it was the idea that g_thread_init() should be the very first thing an app calls in its main() function. And in most cases, gtk_init is also the very first thing a Gtk+ app calls in its main() function. Really, from a user perspective, having to call two functions *by default*, and in particular since it creates a backward incompatibility with earlier versions of Gtk+ is confusing and unnecessary. Now, you may use the argument (already used in this thread) that doing Gtk + threads is a Bad Idea, but that's not our call, that's the user call. I'd suggest making g_thread_init optional in the future, without loosing any of the existing flexibility. GTK 2 is probably better in this respect, because it does not rely on Xlib's i18n, it has its own code. However you'll need libiconv on such systems. I see. So on such systems, libiconv is another required dependency to be able to build Gtk+. By the way, is the correct order to build/install libiconv, then to configure glib with --with-libiconv ? Function gtk_file_selection_populate() is called via a callback connected to
a gtkentry contained within a gtkfileselection. The gtkfileselection window
is being displayed when I trigger this callback. In addition to this, I was
able to step through it's execution with ddd/gdb. Is it possible for
someone to independently verify this odd behavior? Any suggestion would
also be greatly appreciated.
I confirm the behavior. We've also made a similar change locally to Gtk,
since some of our GtkAda users asked for it (in particular when looking
through network directories).
Here is the patch we've ended up with in case someone else is interested.
Would such a patch be integrated into the official Gtk+ ?
We'd perfer to avoid having to maintain a separate version of Gtk+ if
possible.

To complete Owen's detailled answer, the GtkAda team is currently working on Odd, the Other Display Debugger, which is a new graphical front-end for debuggers written using GtkAda. It is a very flexible and extensible front-end that will both be provided as an executable, and as a Gtk+ widget (we will provide a C binding for it ;-), so that it can also be integrated in existing Gtk IDEs. This project is not complete yet, but we expect to start a beta period soon, as well as setting up a web page (that will be linked to http://gtkada.eu.org, so you can check this periodically). I'll post an announcement when this is done. The very nice thing about Odd is that it is very easy to add support for new debuggers/protocols, as well as new languages. Well, in the spirit of Gtk+/Gnome I would say. Odd contains very powerful features such as a nice data display window (probably superior to ddd data display, but I guess this is a matter of taste) and support for multiprocess and multithreaded applications.
