Re: does size matter ?
I have used BT57's quite a while and experience pretty much the same thing on wear especially when riding loaded two up if we are doing any long straight stretches like across Nevada where the speeds are held at around a 100mph (maybe a little more). I thought this was pretty poor milage for a sport touring tire then I talked to the Bridgestone rep and found out the 57 is not a sport touring tire. It is listed as a high performance radial. I still like the tire and have never had them slide unpredictably on me but next time I will try the 020. Bob

Re: Couple questions (Krausers again!)
just my 2 cents worth... the first GTS I bought I put the 50L Yamaha bags on it. I hated the size of them. they looked big and they made the bike look ugly. they were too big to split lanes. plus I wanted a top bag to keep stuff in when two up. on the positive side they made a great seat and table when camping. also the hardware weighs almost nothing. I then switched to the GIVI bags. They are much easier to pack and they could be switched around so you can travel with two 50 liter side bags and a 36 liter top and then cruise around town with just the 50 liter on the top to hold two helmets when stopped looking around. but I get really tired of replacing parts on them. the string straps break, the little orange things that hold the straps on break. the big red thing that holds the bag to the bike breaks. Plus the hardware is very heavy and is a pain to remove to change the rear brake fluid. Then I saw a mounting system that a shop in France made to hold a GIVI as a top box and have the Euro 36 liter Krauser Yamaha bags on the sides. so I switched again. One up I love it. the 36 liter sit so close to the bike that if you can get between cars with your mirrors, you can make it with those bags on. But they are horrible to pack and for serious 2 up travel they are just not big enough. I have a size 15 foot so one pair of tennis shoes fills half the bag. But the 36 liter krausers look very nice on the bike and they are fine for a 10 day trip, although we did 3 months from san diego to el Salvador with them. But we were in one climate and I did not have any nice clothes. The first set I got, I ended up being able to buy the mounts separate and got a set of the black diversion bags from a motorcycle junk yard outside Paris. Recently I had to ship my newest GTS to Europe and I had only the top GIVI on it. I was not sure that I could get the mounts and I really did not want to buy another set of bags just for the mounts and I was not aware even those were still available. So Bob Johnson and I spent 2 days putting the GIVI mounts on the bike. If you get the chance to have some one else put them on and it is free, DO IT!!! Even if it costs, do it. Since I already had the GIVI bags I was just out the cost of the rack. At this point I am not sure what I like best. Packing the GIVI is brain dead work. just toss it all in, slam the lid, making sure the strings that hold the top and bottom together are in the bag and not caught hanging out, snap them on the rack, and I mean listen for the snap otherwise you may see the bag hanging there in the wind, and you are off. the small Krausers take thought. what I am cramming in that hole, why does the thing keep falling over on its back while I am trying to get stuff in and the lid falls on my hand? I now only have 3 GTSs, but I have 1 set 36 liter GTS Yamaha bags, 1 set 50 liter GTS Yamaha bags, 1 set 36 liter Diversion Krauser bags, 1 and a half set of 36 liter GIVI bags and 1 set 50 liter GIVI Maxia bags. and they all have different locks. As for tank bags, I have had the Bagster and if italjet is bad, you should have dealt with capital cycle when they were the importer. every tank cover and bag I ever had we had to restitch and reinforce. I have now totally gone to the Yamaha Germany tank bags but I have had to make a few changes to keep them from slipping. I like the hard sides of this bag better that the soft sides of the bagster. also, you can stack the German bags and still see the speedometer. While this is not a big deal in France, I do like to see if I am running out of gas. Re: ECU Failure (was Atlanta)
Have you checked out the voltage on the tps usually the tps is just a variable resistor and is supposed to give you a certain voltage while the throttle is in a specified position (usually closed at idle). I used sharpened leads on my digital voltmeter for my car just stabbed them into the wires leading into the tps. Not real sure if it works the same on the GTS though. The service manual should say how to test and what the reading should be. Hope it helps. Darren

Actually, the main reason I got the Helibars was to motivate me to insert new grips with heaters underneath. I'm not enthralled with the stock grips anyway. More questions-- Jay, Why the Krausers and not two more 50L Givi's? (Then you could carry the Goldwing with you!) Are the Krausers thinner than the GIVI's? ECU Failure (was Atlanta)
I've tried that, but I'll try again: While riding at speed, the ECU will go into failure mode, there by shutting down a couple of the cylinders and making the bike feel like it has a serious problem. When this occurs, the EFI light in the dash will glow. This failure will last several minutes and then the bike will function normally again (with an occasional hiccup) Using the service manual, I placed the bike into dealer mode and rode it until the failure occurred. The diagnostic error code read 13 and 15. Status 13 is a failure of the Intake Pressure Sensor (IPS) and 15 is a failure of the Throttle Position Sensor (TPS). According to the manual, before tackling the TPS, you should resolve all other failures. So, I hooked a voltage meter to the IPS and fired up the bike... the voltage from the IPS read about 3.2 to 3.5 volts, which seemed to correlate to the chart included in the service manual (but I don't have a barometer to fully check). Riding around with the volt meter hacked into the IPS doesn't seem reasonable. The real problem is that just because the ECU says the IPS is faulting, it doesn't necessarily mean that it is so... it could be a short in the wiring harness, it could be a bad EFI ECU, or it could be a bad IPS. Pricing out the components showed the EFI ECU is about $900, the IPS is about $270 and the TPS is about $170, so as I said before, before I blow up to $900+ on this, I want to be sure it's necessary. BTW, I called my local dealership and they pretty much told me that they would need to get these parts and install them into the bike to fully determine what failed. As I stated before, the ideal solution would be to swap components with another GTS and take them both for a ride. If my bike fails, it's the bike. If the other bike fails, it the component. Of course, in the future if called upon, I'd be happy to share my bike and what I have learned. BTW, my GTS has about 8500 miles on it. So, if you can help or have constructive comments, I would appreciate it. Re: Helibar question
Hi Jay, Heli's should be really simple for the GTS especially compared to say an R1 but I would make sure I had a new pair of grips to put on since you'll probably want to be trying it out as soon as your done. I had forgotten about that when I put the Heli's on my R1 and had to until the next day before I could really try them out just a suggestion. Darren
Re: does size matter ?
Hi dave , BT56's are softer than BT57's BT010's are softer than BT020's I've tried 56's & 57's . Heres what i found, the 57's got a flat spot after about 2000 miles, worn out at 3000. 56's lasted 5000 miles wore quite evenly , not much of a flat spot . I'am only talking about rear tyres here. So you ask why do the softer tyres last longer? The only answer i have is , soft tyres give a bit on acceleration , so the rubber doesn't get ripped off. where as harder compounds , the rubber doesn't flex so much , and the rubber is torn off in small amounts , hence reason for flat spot. tankbags and krauser luggage for gts
hi gang -- the bike is a beauty, but lots of life conspiring to keep me from riding much at the moment or write much to list, but i wanted to keep you posted on a couple things i have been developing some during this more down time, mostly about euro parts for gts, some of which have been referenced in recently posted threads, and so may be of interest. ralph joachim weiss in germany is great, and sells some really neat stuff for the gts, including the shorter mra shields kevin displays. e-mail at [EMAIL PROTECTED] . [ "(snipped) The mra screens are special made and are available in the following colors: gray, brown, black, blue, violet, red, green, yellow. The Superbike Kit with colored aluminium handlebar and colored bar ends: silver, gold, blue, black, violet, red. One of my clients changed his [mirrors] to my BMW-mirrors (type R1100S with adapter plate). This is my actuel mirror solution. Other stuff for the gts? I have a special spoiler for the original touring windscreen. A racing exhaust system (polished stainless steel or carbon). Front and rear suspension from öhlins or technoflex (both very good, but expensive). Hoses made of flexible steel for break and clutch. Leightweight foot rests made of colored aluminium." ] bagster (baglux) gets good editorial review in euro press (bike, ride, etc.) for slick integrated full tank bra, matching bag setups. their products are beautiful. i've heard it reported that the bag system works particularly well for the gts where magnetic/strap systems of other mfrs slide all around on "tank." the folks in france are tres cool. the buttheads in nyc at the italjet office that has been repping bagster in u.s. are total cretins. bagster, s.a. in france is probably going to soon be offering u.s. customers a means to more directly purchase their products, but i do not know the status of this change. should i learn how this shapes up, i will report on it. www.bagster.com. lastly, concerning krauser luggage, i may have soon available for sale a set of grey 34-liter bags, (but probably not mounting bracket hardware, though i could help someone obtain hardware.) though there is a bit of a language gap -- mostly because my non-existent dutch sucks, making his english seem pretty darn good -- i have been working well with the folks at WWW.ROBSACC.NL . e-mail at [EMAIL PROTECTED] or [EMAIL PROTECTED] . they were featured awhile back as a site to see pix of different kinds of krausers on various bikes. there is a top case available, a la givi, as well as other styles. i think these guys can help you get most anything krauser has made and ship world-wide. you do deal with the international thing. but, since one thing folks have done is buy their bags from yamaha in germany, who only had at last report maybe a couple more sets left available, this may present listers with an alternative. again, as i said, i am working with these guys, no transaction complete or goods received so not even a complete report, and your own actual individual mileage may vary, but so far so good. and, i will likely have a _sweet_ set of 34-liter bags ready to ship to someone soon. cheers to all, ciao, -- jim Jim Guss [EMAIL PROTECTED] (505) 989-1725 206 Tesuque Drive Santa Fe, New Mexico 87505-3838, USA

Bike for sale
Hi Gang, Unfortunately one of the bikes has to go. The wife and I are going to spend the next 4 or 5 years traveling the west with our four bikes in a four horse 5th wheel with living quarters. That means the track bike has to go. So, for sale is a 1994 Honda F-4, the plastic has been replaced with Shark Skinz, the only instruments are water temp, tach, and a toggle switch for an ignition. The bike is about a light as you can make one however it is still legal for plates. The head light is a token light and the indicators work, it also has a tail/brake light. About 9000 miles on stock engine with stock exhaust, valves have been adjusted. That's about it, I love this little bike and hate to sell it but 4 is enough. At $2500 you can afford to throw it away on the track and keep the GTS whole. October the first I'll be traveling to St Petersburg from Salt Lake and could deliver to any place in the middle. If interested in preserving the GTS call 801 467 7068. Allan

AW: Couple questions
snip... 1. I've seen the Givi setup. Anybody point me to a pic of the Krauser setup? 2. Can any friendly German listers give me an idea of cost/availability/willingness to ship, or do I have to go visit my Auntie in Bamberg? adam snip... The "Krausers" are still on sale in Germany. The special one's for the GTS are sold out, as far as I knew, but there are sets for the 900 Diversion, same stuff, different decals. Problem is the "Mounting Rack".it SHOULD FIT at the GTS. Solution: You should visit your Auntie in Bamberg. Bamberg is just a wrist of the hand away (ok60 Klicks and some of nice twistys). We can meet in Bamberg and discuss that with my Yami Dealer. The front D204 130/60 has about 7k miles and is about shot. Most of my riding is cruising at 65-85 on the highway, but when I do get to the twisties or ramps, I tend to accel, corner and brake hard. (tires) I have a BT57 on the rear that has gone about 8k = miles now, and looks like it has another 5-6k left. The front = D204 130/60 has about 7k miles and is about shot. Can someone please either digicam me or explain with dimensions where to install it. CAN$275 (US$183) not cheap, but local please cc. to [EMAIL PROTECTED] as well as the list. Robert Wilson

You need low and midrange power for top gear roll-on, and thats where the GTS shines. But compared to the new open class bikes, by 7k rpm you start to get a disadvantage that never ends. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Thursday, July 20, 2000 8:21 PM To: Multiple recipients of list Subject: Re: GTS vs Hayabusa In a message dated 7/19/00 8:53:08 PM Eastern Daylight Time, [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: > performance figures of tested bikes. RE: does size matter ?
BT020's replace the BT54s which are higher mileage tires. BT56s are even softer than BT57s. Guys, Maybe I haven't been paying attention, but I thought that BT57's now became BT010's and BT56's became BT020's? I had a set of BT57's fitted at the end of May, and after a trip down to France and back (about 2K miles total), my Yamaha dealer says that they will need replacing next service! about 3K miles at ?320.00 per set! I intend to go for the BT56's AKA BT020's next time. I understand that they are a little firmer. Try a BT56 Bridgestone 180/55 @ 41psi . although its now been updated to a BT010 , i haven't tryed them yet but the write ups have been good in the press . both these tyres are quite sticky , so they may not last to long , about 5000 miles with mixed riding ( giving it a handful most of the time ). atb Nick T

Re: GTS vs Hayabusa
Hmmm, about 60% more claimed horsepower, about the same weight, I am in shock.
Re: Starting problem
I suspect the side stand switch. It has a much higher fatality rate than the clutch switch.
Euroscreen
Is it still posible to obtain a euro screen? Anyone over there willing to ship to the states? Thanks, Stephen Furr '93 GTS1000, '00 Valkyrie Interstate "You can tell the quality of a person by how they treat people they don't need."
Microfiche web/pdf missing information
Hello All! Welcome me back to the list after a two year absence. It's great to once again be on the best two wheels in the world! Short story is that I moved to Scotland on company business and sold my dear GTS. Stupidest move I ever made. Really began to regret the decision when I returned from the land of horizontal rain. :-) Bought a low mileage '93 last weekend and am absolutely thrilled. Now, quick question: on page 47 of the parts microfiche the listing appears to have been truncated. The diagram shows all of the parts, but the listing of part numbers begins at reference number 29. I specifically need the part numbers for parts 6 (strap), 20 and 22 (grab rails)... and anything else that might be "deep red cocktail" that's on that page. Much appreciated... strange how that page got clipped. Thanks, Stephen Furr '93 GTS1000AE, '00 Valkyrie Interstate "You can tell the quality of a person by how they treat people they don't need."
