Re: [guadec-list] Next meeting?

2012-06-20 Thread Bob Murphy
Hi all,

I apologize for neither organizing nor attending these meetings the last few
months. Since returning from travel in March, my wife has been sick and my work
schedule has been crazy, but things are finally getting better.

Anyway, I plan to attend this meeting on Friday.16:00 UTC is 09:00 here in San
Francisco.

Best regards,
Bob Murphy

P.S. I will not be able to attend GUADEC this year - my contract programming
work has gotten very busy, and I can't take the time off. :-(

P.P.S. Has the board decided whether 2013 will be a GUADEC or a Desktop Summit?

I used to work for ACCESS, and to the best of my knowledge, they're no longer
doing much or any work with GNOME technologies. In any case, I doubt they'd be
a good candidate for sponsorship now.

A few more possibilities, both for GUADEC sponsorship and being on the GNOME
advisory board:

Lab126, the division of Amazon that develops the Kindle. Their open-source tree
shows they use a ton of GNOME technologies in the Kindle, including GTK+ and
WebKitGTK. Some contact names there are Saldy Antony (manages WebKit
development), David Berbessou (Director of Engineering), and Howard Look (VP
Software).

TouchTunes is a Montreal-based company that uses GNOME technologies to build
digital jukeboxes. Contacts there are Francois Beaumier (Director, Music
Applications Development) and Michael Tooker (senior VP for technology and
operations).

Linaro is a consortium of ARM chip companies and related software firms that
supplies and promotes a common Linux development platform. Contacts include
Michael Opdenacker (Community Manager) and Christian Reis (VP of Engineering).

Tivo's open-source tree shows they use some lower-level GNOME technologies
including libxml2 and libxslt. A contact there is Karl Glynn (Senior Director,
Software Engineering).

Garmin used GNOME technologies in their GPS devices in 2009, but it's not clear
whether they're still doing it.

This is a great way to do things. I had considered approaching some of the
companies around Silicon Valley, but didn't want to interfere with any other
money-raising activities with the same companies, and in any case I'm going to
be unable to do anything like that for a couple of months.

[guadec-list] GUADEC 2012 Sponsor Perks

2011-11-20 Thread Bob Murphy
Hi,

During the last GUADEC committee IRC meeting, there was quite a bit of
discussion about potential perks to offer sponsors. Here's a summary, and my
take on them.

1. Free passes
I know some sponsors would expect at least some free passes in return for
sponsorship. If attendance is free, like the last DS, this is moot.

2. A special dinner or party with key GNOME contributors
A "selling point" for sponsors is informal networking with decision-makers
and influencers in the community. From that perspective, I would prefer a party
to a sit-down dinner.

3. Sponsorship level bump
I think it would be challenging to say exactly how many previous GUADECs a
sponsor would need to have sponsored to earn this.

4. Discounts on sponsorship amounts
I like the idea of a 6% discount for previous sponsors which would go to 10%
if the sponsor increased their level compared to last time, and opening this to
all previous sponsors.

Best regards,
Bob

[guadec-list] [Minutes] GUADEC committee meeting on 24 October 2011 UTC 14:00

2011-10-24 Thread Bob Murphy
Meeting Minutes

bobert_: Bob Murphy
gpoo: Germán Poó-Caamaño
karenesq: Karen Sandler
kittykat
teuf: Christophe Fergeau
txenoo: Chema Casanova
williamfromtexas: William Carlson
yippi: Brian Cameron

Summary

Local team update

The university's Faculty Dean has confirmed the facility booking. txenoo
described the facilities.

Publicity and Infrastructure
Since the dates have been set, consensus was to do a press release, and publish
them on 2012.guadec.org as soon as the local team can arrange that. txenoo has
emailed the gnome.org sysadmins, and filed a bug in GNOME bugzilla, to get
control of the guadec.org website.

Sponsors
Much discussion on the sponsor brochure; plans are to review a new draft of the
text content at the next meeting. Further discussion on sponsorship levels, and
on layout/design assistance.

Distro summit and other special tracks/topics
yippi described the summits at GNOME Asia and the DS. He summarized them as
being very useful, but would benefit from more organization and publicity to
get more distros engaged, make sure the right people from each distro attend,
and make sure important issues are addressed. Some businesses in the
embedded/mobile sectors may also want to send people, since they effectively
create their own GNOME-based distros. txenoo suggested organizing a half-day
track on the 26th or 30th.

williamfromtexas suggested UI/visual design as a special topic. txenoo
suggested we get feedback from the advisory board; karenesq agreed to take it
up with them.

Program committee
There were discussions of how this worked in previous years and how the members
had been selected. The possibility of a "blind" approach (selecting proposals
without knowing who proposed them) was raised, but several objections were
raised, and the consensus was not to do this. txenoo proposed a sequence of
steps to organize the program committee, and said jjsanchez from the local
committee had volunteered to do them with txenoo's assistance.

[guadec-list] Leading into next GUADEC meeting

2011-10-08 Thread Bob Murphy
Hi,

Here are a few topics that came up during the last IRC meeting that we might
want to think about before Monday's meeting.

- Distro summit: Brian Cameron mentioned that there was a very successful
distro meeting at the last GNOME Asia, and suggested we might want to host
something similar at GUADEC.

- Sponsors: We need to put together a small group from the local and
international teams to work on the sponsor brochure, and once that's done, to
contact possible sponsors. I think discussions on this should move to one of
the private email lists.

- Sponsor opportunities: Some non-distro companies might appreciate other ways
to interact with the GNOME development community. There was some discussion in
the last IRC meeting about lightning talks or demo slots. Another example could
be chip vendors, who might want to provide a lab, training, and/or discounts on
prototype hardware. What other ways are there to provide value to sponsors that
would also benefit the community, and what would we want to pursue around this?

Best regards,
Bob

There was some discussion on finances, tax-free status, etc.

control of the guadec-planning list, and the guadec.org web site.
There was quite a bit of discussion about sponsors, including some interesting
ideas for attracting new sponsors and providing technical networking
opportunities for them.
The next meeting witll be on 10 October at 16:00 UTC.

[guadec-list] [Reminder] GUADEC committee meeting on 26 September 2011 UTC 14:00

2011-09-23 Thread Bob Murphy
Hi all,

The next GUADEC committee meeting wil be on Monday, 26 September, at 14:00 UTC.
The IRC channel for the meeting is: #guadec @irc.gnome.org

This is our first meeting after the Desktop Summit. I've put together an
agenda, which is at the bottom of the email. It's pretty detailed, and is
structured so that if we don't get to the last items during this meeting,
that's okay.

Best regards,
Bob Murphy

Agenda
--

1. GUADEC 2012
  a. How are things going for the local A Coruña team?
  b. How can this committee help the local team now?
  c. Email list and IRC organization
i. Is the approach discussed at the link at the bottom the best way to
organize things for 2012?
ii. Is the guadec-planning list alive? Who has control of that now, and
how can we add people?
  d. Website (http://guadec.org/)
i. Who has control of this now? Should that transfer to someone else?
ii. How can we put something interesting and exciting there early?
  e. Suggestions for potential sponsors; volunteer to create/update sponsorship
brochure
  f. Begin thinking about call for papers, press, publicity, promoting
attendance

2. Next Meeting
  a. Time: Some members would prefer to meet at 16:00 UTC.
  b. Date: Two weeks from this meeting will be 10 October, which is during the
Montreal GNOME Summit. If that will be a problem for people, we can meet the
next week.

3. Desktop Summit
  a. Informal feedback: we expect a report from the DS organizers, but if there
was anything people attending the meeting thought went especially well or could
have been improved, that would be interesting to know.
  b. We need a volunteer to update the GUADEC planning pages with "lessons
learned" from this informal feedback and the report.

4. Open Discussion
Anything else we might want to talk about.

Good - I figured something like that was the case.

I was thinking that no matter which is decided, the conference location is
usually a university. That being so, I believe it would be ideal to issue the
request for bids early next year to give the bidding groups plenty of time to
coordinate with staff and faculty, and complete and submit their bids before
summer break.

Best regards,
Bob

Re: [guadec-list] Organizing GUADEC 2012

2011-09-20 Thread Bob Murphy
Hi,
> Draft call for sponsorship, call for paper documents etc
> Share Sponsors' contact
> Have regular meetings (usually IRC)
I'd like to return to having the GUADEC committee meet every two weeks on IRC,
and start this coming Monday, 26 September, at 14:00 UTC. I'll email an agenda
in a day or so, and would welcome suggestions for topics to discuss

Emily mentioned that she was the only person attending the IRC meetings from
Asia, and that we might want to switch the time to one that's more convenient
for the other members. I'm very interested in that; 14:00 UTC is a little early
for me (7 AM California time), and it will change to 6 AM for me on 6 November.
So please let me know if a later time, such as 16:00 UTC, would be a problem
for you.
> Focus on continually improving the process, including post-event reports.
I think this is great, and would like to contact the organizers of the recent
DS to get their comments and suggestions. Is there somebody on the GNOME
Foundation Board I should work with on that? Otherwise, I will plan to contact
them directly.

Also, I'd like to start early on the bids process for 2014, and the big
question for that is, of course, will 2014 be a GUADEC or a Desktop Summit? How
is that decided, and when is that decision likely to be made?
> The event committee would help with international sponsorship opportunities
> while the local team would likely focus more on local sponsorship
> opportunities.
This is also a great idea. The members of the GUADEC committee are located all
over the globe, and have contact with many organizations who could be sponsors.

On a related note, I really like the Berlin DS Sponsorship Opportunities
brochure, and I think we create do one like it for GUADEC 2012. It makes it
very plain to potential sponsors what their options are, and what benefits they
can get.

Best regards,
Bob Murphy

P.S. Are any of the folks on this list planning to attend the Montreal GNOME
Summit? I will be there, and will be happy to buy you a beer or other beverage.

[guadec-list] A couple of questions

2011-09-01 Thread Bob Murphy
Hi,

What location was chosen for next year's GUADEC? I wasn't able to attend the
Desktop Summit and haven't heard.

Also, will we be having another meeting of the GUADEC committee online soon?

Thanks,
Bob Murphy

Re: [guadec-list] GUADEC 2012 Bids page updated

2011-06-07 Thread Bob Murphy
Good point, Stormy - I did that, too.

Now we just need to start contacting people to encourage them to bid.

Does anybody know who, if anybody, has already submitted a bid to hold the 2012
GUADEC?

2011-06-01 Thread Bob Murphy
Hi,

Any of them should work, but I would prefer Monday if possible. The next week
would be better, though.

Do you have a guess on how long the meeting is likely to run?

Best regards,
Bob
