If you build the image from a very recent version of Guix's source, it
should be there, now (see below).

The website is synced periodically.  I think we keep the website synced
to the latest release, so that when you download the latest release, the
documentation you read on the website is precisely for the version of
Guix that you downloaded.  If you update Guix later on, you should refer
to the documentation that gets installed in your OS, rather than the
website.  You can access it with a Texinfo reader, for example by
invoking "info guix" on the command line or "C-h i" followed by "guix"
in Emacs.

It may not be exactly the same version that was used to build the
version available on the website, but you can find an up-to-date version
of the VM image's OS configuration at
'./gnu/system/examples/vm-image.tmpl' in the Guix source:

 -device virtio-blk,drive=myhd \
 -drive if=none,file=/tmp/the_image,id=myhd

This seems like a good change.

At first I was a little confused about why we would ever want to use a
one-shot shepherd service instead of an activation snippet, but after
reviewing the account-shepherd-service, I think I understand.  It seems
that we make it a one-shot shepherd service instead of an activation
snippet so that we can take advantage of shepherd's service dependency
management.  In the case of account-shepherd-service, it looks like we
made it a shepherd service to ensure that it would run after
'file-systems' is up.  This makes sense, since it could be a little
awkward to try to ensure proper execution order by extending the
activation service, and even if we did that, it would duplicate the
dependency management logic that shepherd gives us already.

So yeah, it makes sense to me.

Yes.

In my case I was noticing erratic intervals produced by the sleep
commands.  So '#:sleep 1000' gave a 6 s pause and '#:sleep 13000' gave
a 26 s pause, for example.  After the changes the commands produce the
expected results.

Hi Florian,

I've downloaded that tarball, and generated guix-manual.pot manually
with make doc-pot-update from 05344275517e12ea60039272b5d8936d18fd4338
and I get the same file[1] and I get 7985 messages[2].  I did not check
the other one, but I can see guix install/remove/search documentation
too, so I have started updating the translation.

[1] Diff from generated content, even though git HEAD does not have the
latest content. It's a problem with generated files in VCS, but I've
already created a bug with my last patch trying to remove
generated files from git. :-(

It would be great if you can test the accuracy on your system too.  If
you add '#:sleep 1' to one of the session files, for example, does
it make the cli video 10 seconds longer?

If so, I think it will make finishing off the timings and checking the
durations much easier.

I would love to have some services started when I log in (tor,
transmission-daemon, mpd, gpg-agent… you name them!) without having to
rely on the root user and system configuration.

One other nice thing would be to have something like systemd timers [2]
to replace cron jobs. I use them to run things like mbsync and vdirsyncer.

I'm not sure that I'm able to write any (good) Guile code, but I can read
some and discuss things, if that helps!

I didn't, but I have to admit that my timing was kind of homemade, I
tried to match the audio with the video as exact as possible.

I see. I was testing with the current screen file. Please, let me know
when you push the changes so that I make all the videos again and

It has only 6801 messages, but the 1.0.0-pre2 has 7944 messages.
Also, 1.0.0-pre3 references GuixSD instead of Guix System.  It is an
old version.

Working on the timings for 02-daily-use1 I have found that I have
needed to make a couple of changes to the 'hesitate' procedure in the

I am not familiar with TP tarball submissions, but for me the output

$ msgfmt --statistics guix-1.0.0-pre3/po/doc/guix-manual.pot 
0 übersetzte Meldungen, 6801 unübersetzte Meldungen.

appears to be dubious.  Shouldn’t the tarball contain an up-to-date
POT file?

Not a microkernel, but Plan 9's file system semantics might be worth playing 
around with. The POSIX emulation probably wouldn't be able to support a 
full-blown Guix system, but the OS is very well worth taking hints from, at the 
very least. Overlays would imho be much nicer to work with than path variables.
