Thanks for that link! I didn't know someone has done such a research about
surviving garments... I think this won't help me much directly in this project,
but it'll surely help me in the future:-))

If you think that surviving garments from early 14th c. Bohemia might
help you in this research, look into the burial garments of King
Rudolf I of Bohemia. If you go to my surviving garments database
online choosegarment.php> and simply select: (Modern) Country of Garment =
Czech Republic, all the items currently in the database with that
characteristic are the Rudolf grave garments. I don't know how easy
the cited pubications will be to track down, but they include cutting
diagrams and lots of pictures as well as descriptions.

Re: [h-cost] silk jersey knit

2007-02-25 Thread Sue Clemenger
ProbablyI don't do gentleman's clothing (or 18th century, although I
dream of some day having a gown or two), but I'd think that the silk knit
would do fine. I know that, during the period about which I know the most
(16th c. England), there were both knitted and woven-cloth hose, so if I
were going to use something like silk jersey, I'd probably base them on
extant examples. You might have to play with bits of it, to test for
stretch, etc. Silk's not the most resilient of fibers, and I've never had
any that was knitted as fine as a jersey, so I don't know how the
non-stretchy silk and the stretchy knit construction would interact around
your ankles, etc. I'm determined to make myself a pair of "Eleanor"
stockings some day, and I haven't been in a yarn store, yet, that hasn't
tried to talk me out of doing 100% silk--most recommend a blend, without
understanding the whole recreationist thing

[h-cost] Our Country's Good

2007-02-25 Thread Anna Zola Piggie Rethie

Hi Anna You can properly get these books on ILL
Duck and Cabbage Tree (1967) later re issued as Clothes in Australia. By
Cedric Flower. Pub. Kangaroo Press 1984
Costume in Australia By Marion Fletcher. Pub Oxford
University Press 1984 I think this is the book that has a list of clothing
provided
to the convicts, both male and female Sorry book not to hand for checking.

Breeches and Bustles An illustrated history of clothes
worn
in Australia 1788-1914 By Elizabeth Scandrett. Pub. Pioneer Design Studio
1988 Hatches Matches and Dispatches. By Rowena
Clark. National Gallery of Victoria 1987 This has a nice picture of a
wedding gown
approx. 1789 that went out of England (not white it would do for day dress
design)
The Remote Garrison. The British army in
Australia.
By Peter Stanley. Pub. Kangaroo Press 1986. I can't recall if the marines
are
shown in this book. I don't have it to hand at the moment to check.
 The Dress of
the British Sailor. By Admiral Sir Gerald Dickens. Pub National Maritime
Museum
1957 A small paper back with pictures for sailor costume of 1737 1750
1790
1795 1798 and 1799
Australian Costume 1788-1988 For Teen Dolls. By Marjory Fainges.
Pub Kangaroo Press 1987. I have included this for any one who has time to
dress
Barbie and Ken as a memento of the production.
I hope this helps. Lots of
luck with the production. Regards Joy

Oh, indeed, that's tremendously helpful. I've ILL'ed them all, hopefully
they won't take ten years to get here. Thanks to everybody who's responded
to this.
My plan for the marines is to chop up a bunch of red wool blazers and modify
them so they're pretty and redcoatty. I've got a navy-type coat, and some
fall-front navy pants, for our midshipman. I've also got an 18th century-ish
dress and a corsetty-thing which I plan to dye. Whoever used to be in charge
of costume was not really big on the historical accuracy thing, but I mean
to change that.
The overall costume design is due March 12th, and the one thing I don't have
a fixed idea about is the aborigine. Does anyone know any books or othe
resources about the aborigines in general that would have helpful
information or pictures?
Much thanks,
Anna

If you mean the second edition of Gale Owen-Crocker's "Dress in Anglo-Saxon
England", I agree! You won't be disappointed. I had the 1st edition when I
bought my copy of the second edition of the book, and the 2d edition has so
much more information, it almost seems like a totally different book.

On the other hand, Penelope Walton Rogers's "Cloth and Clothing in Anglo-Saxon
England" is not yet out, though Ian just sent me e-mail claiming that "it's
getting closer"
