[h-cost] London bookstores

2008-06-23 Thread Carol Mitchell

I've never been to London (sigh), but I used to buy books from Foyle's
bookshop-pre-internet and pre-weak dollar. I don't think I bought any costuming
books from them, but I notice that they are called the largest bookshop in
London, so I'd assume they must have several costume books.
BTW, it was also pre-decimal coinage for England, which gives you an idea of
how long ago it was. I checked just to make sure they were still in business.

[h-cost] old pfaff industrial

2008-06-23 Thread Susan C
Hi, A non-profit sailing place I frequent had an old industrial pfaff sewing
machine donated. They can't figure out how to get it to work as the upper
thread isn't catching the bobbin thread. I took a look at it and think that
the upper thread isn't getting low enough to catch the bobbin thread. I'm not
sure how to fix this. I did tell them to check the needle, but the needles in
the drawer were the right ones for the machine.

Any advise where I can get more help? I did find that the pfaff has a bunch of
manuals up, but I didn't see a model number on the machine (but I may have been
looking at the wrong spot). And this is an old one and I am not sure their
manuals go back that far.

I'd love to get them up and running with this as then they may let me use it
from time to time ;-)

thanks, Susan in Seattle

First thing - try turning the needle around. If it is in backwards (as
is common) it could be the problem. I've seen several broken
machines where that turned out to be the only problem.

...or sideways; most industrial machines I've used are round-shank
needle systems, so it's not difficult to mis-align a needle.

[h-cost] New Victorian patterns

2008-06-23 Thread Deb Salisbury, the Mantua-Maker
Hello! I would like to announce that I have three new patterns on my website. All three come in sizes 2 - 30. You can see them
at:

http://www.mantua-maker.com/new_victorian_patterns.html

The first is an overskirt called the Camargo Sash Bustle Drapery, for the years
1868 - 1888.
The second is a bodice named the Mystic Mine Basque, for the years 1875 - 1890.
The third is the You Bet Bodice, for the years 1870 - 1890.

Also, I have reworked my 1825 - 1830 Daydress so that it includes all sizes
from 2 - 30 in the same pattern.

Happy sewing,
