Re: [h-cost] Wal-Mart fabrics ........1 reason why their goingout..(imho)
My local Super Wally Worlds (we have 3) used to carry 90% good to excellent fabric, then they decided to phase it out 2 years ago. So when the they ran into opposition they started to carry more crap fabric. This ploy was to discourage customers to go elsewhere so that they can eliminate the fabric department. Most of the fabric sales people at my WWs are friendly and knowledgeable. De -Original Message- Could it be the fact that they carry crap fabric in all the Walmarts perhaps be the reason, _why_ they are not profitable? Re: [h-cost] Wal-Mart fabric dept.
Driven all the independent fabric stores out of business within a fair sized radius by low-balling them and now THEY go out of the Fabric business? Seems typical. Drive all other possible competition out and leave room only for the cheap, Chinese stuff, made by people earning cents an hour with few safety features, less health regulations, and outlawed unions. This tends to make the $1.00 a yard stuff too expensive. Particularly if you are an unemployed fabric maker in the Carolinas. Might as well send .50 to China and .50 to the Walton family. I think I'll continue to praise the Powers that Be that Wal-Mart hasn't succeeded in taking over Portland and environs (several towns around are fighting it tooth and nail because of its eventual "buy from us or die" strategy. Pendleton Wool at $4.99 a yard, linen at less than that if you know what you are looking for and are ready when the sales come up. Re: [h-cost] walmart fabrics
When the department manager could order the bins at our Walmarts, they would get in about 60% of the decent to good stuff like 100% raw silk, 100% cotton brocade, brocades, jaquards...etc. Then when upper management took over and didn't know what the customer wanted in the fabric section the stuff was 85% crap. One of the stores still gets in the black fabric for the students. Wal-Mart says that fewer people sew today but in my town, with two colleges and one university, 5 different types of reinactment groups, two, soon to be three high schools (though the 2 -3 yd. pre-cuts would work for them for their HES/HE class), one children's theatre, Amish, several sororities, and fraternities, we need more then just Jo Ann's who tends to lean towards the quilter's and crafters side. New members of SCA who are students can't always afford Jo Ann's and sometimes cannot wait for the sales. Since more SCA events are camping, one needs to have more then one outfit so that their ride to the event will let them ride home with them after the event. :) De -Original Message- but occasionally you could find some decent cottons at least. Re: [h-cost] walmart fabrics
People are still sewing in my neck of the woods, but a lot more careful about waiting for sales. They are also concerned about fabric quality, esp thread count among quilters. I think it is tied in more with the economy--most people have been losing spending power in dollars earned for a long time(hence Walmart, etc) and now the chickens have come home to roost, so to speak. Fabric retailers are more and more owned by big conglomerates that are more concerned with bottom line profits. Consumers are buying a lot fewer clothes and I've seen more than one back-to-school shopping kid throw a temper tantrum because Mom and Dad are now shopping Payless shoes and Target(where I buy my own shoes and have for a long time), instead of buying them expensive name-brand shoes. Of course, I still see a lot of older kids buying multiple pairs of Nike's or whatever(and wonder where the money comes from!)
