I actually have to scroll down for it to open up the rest of the page. Then after a second or two the video screen opens and the "play" icon (not the text) shows up in the middle of the image. Try it this way: http://www.boeing.com/history/video-series/index.page Or click on "100" in the menu and then scroll down halfway to see the video there. Re: [h-cost] Regency era evening gloves
Greetings! While this is not my era of research I do handle quite a few gloves and know just enough to find portraits to help others on their journey in finding gloves suitable for their gorgeous gowns. What I have found may not help but I hope it will at least point you in a direction to experiment on a color. The portraits that I have seen of ladies in black gowns that are not of a mourning nature wear either fawn colored full gloves or skin toned lace fingerless gloves. What you may want to do is take a few fabrics of the colors you think may work and lay then with the gown next to your arm and photograph them. This will be your test if the color will not only look proper but if it will go with your skin tone as well. The quickest place currently for you to find portraits of ladies in this era wearing black with gloves is actually Pinterest. From there you can search out the images at their source or in your books for better looks at the hands. :) I hope this helps. :) Franchesca -Original Message- From: h-costume-boun...@indra.com [mailto:h-costume-boun...@indra.com] On Behalf Of humbugfo...@att.net Sent: Sunday, July 06, 2014 1:36 PM To: h-costume@mail.indra.com Subject: [h-cost] Regency era evening gloves I am making a Regency evening gown for a friend. The Maney Publishing copy published in 1988 is the more valuable copy. I have both copies, this one and the 2001 republication. The paper quality is better in the older publication and the images are sharper and deeper in color than the 2001 copy. The 2001 is currently being sold for anywhere from 100 to 118. The 1988 copy sells for anywhere from 250 to 300. This is most certainly a sign that the photographic arts are being lost and assumed duplicated because, "it is just a picture". There are so many works of art lost to us that sometimes these photographs is all we have left of them. Re: [h-cost] marking tools
You can also adjust the blade that sharpens the point. The problem that I found with the one I got the kids was that it runs too long, so when the point is its sharpest it hits the wall and the tip breaks. If you adjust the blade you can get it to create a sharper point before it hits that wall and then you have to "eye ball it" to make sure you stop so that your point will not break. It is the wall sharpener that is driving me batty at the moment. I do not know what to adjust to make it stop breaking the point. The trim maker that finally gets a clue and starts making embroidery or beaded designs on a near-transparent Russian tulle/voile will make millions off of us. It does what both of the other apps do, fabric and pattern : databasing, plus it also has a section for people where you can store all of the : measurements for an individual and a project database so that you can store : the : particulars for a specific project. All of the "dictionaries" for pattern : companies, notion types, fabric types, measurement types, etc can be : customized. : : : I am not using Pattern Pal at all because I like the way Sewing Kit does the : patterns. I do not have a copy but when I was doing research about Siena there were images of the women in partial armour, they used to be in constant war with Florence. [h-cost] the school of historical dress
I just had to share .. the school of historical dress http://theschoolofhistoricaldress.org.uk/ This new school has a curriculum that will cover all aspects of the designing and making of historical costume for theatre, cinema and the living history movement; its unique approach will focus on developing the skills and understanding needed to create new generations of historical tailors, seamstresses and other specialists. All teaching will be from practitioners who are actively working in various related areas of dress - cutters, tailors, sewers, designers and historians. Our aim is to promote the study of historical dress and textiles by the students, both of the Western World and of other cultures, and to base such study on primary evidence, in particular, by studying and understanding surviving clothing supported by written sources and visual (portraits, sculptures etc). The school will encourage new research into historical dress and introduce students to the tools needed for this, such as how to study an object, identify its materials, cut, construction and historical context, and then how to document the object by pattern taking, drawing and photography. Students will then be taught to make such garments themselves. The school will house the Janet Arnold Archive, including her unique and extensive colour slide collection of both surviving clothing and related images. The Hopkins Collection of surviving garments and textiles from c.1700 to 1950 will bring further riches. This large collection, gathered over forty years by Alan and Vanessa Hopkins, includes examples of the dress of men and women from all social classes. Together with other such resources, these collections will be actively used in the classroom. They will form the basis for projects and students will have the opportunity to handle objects as part of their studies. The school is based in London and will initially be offering several short courses in the autumn of 2011, including an introductory course and a study day. directors - jenny tiramani, santina m. levey, vanessa hopkins associate teachers - luca costigliolo, alan hopkins, claire thornton, harriet barsby to join their mailing list and receive updates on our events and courses please write to i...@theschoolofhistoricaldress.org.uk Franchesca ___ h-costume mailing list h-costume@mail.indra.com http://mail.indra.com/mailman/listinfo/h-costume

While I agree with this statement I have to add that there are paintings that you will see strings dangling from the collar and cuffs. These are not to be confused for draw strings, they are ties. :) Now for me personally, sometimes finding someone to help me with my ties makes them just decorative strings. :) Franchesca > -Original Message- > From: h-costume-boun...@indra.com [mailto:h-costume- > boun...@indra.com] On Behalf Of Kate Bunting > Sent: Monday, October 11, 2010 3:11 AM > To: h-cost...@indra.com > Subject: Re: [h-cost] OOPS - forgot subject line - Chemise pattern > > Laurie T wrote: > > >The chemise in the painting seems unlikely to have a drawstring neckline. > >Any thoughts on this? > > We discussed drawstrings on shifts/chemises a few years ago, and the > consensus was that before the 18th century they all had sewn gathers round > the neck and wrists. > > I recently heard a talk by Stuart Peachey, the British expert on the 17th > century, and asked him a question about this. Re: [h-cost] Value of handmade costumes...
For insurance reasons you need to find something like it with a price tag to use as your baseline. What would it cost you to replace it is the name of this game. Ches -Original Message- From: Guenievre de Monmarche Sent: Sunday, August 22, 2010 9:42 AM To: Historical Costume Subject: [h-cost] Value of handmade costumes... Hi! This is a slightly off-topic question, but as I'm in the middle of the post-Pennsic garb cleaning binge, spending hour cleaning hems and steaming wrinkles gives one a lot of time to ponder the value of the fabric and time in one's garb. So I started wondering whether I should get a rider on my insurance to cover the garb, and realized I had no idea how to estimate the value in question. In most cases I know how to estimate the fabric cost, but how do I estimate labor, especially on things with 100+ hours of embroidery? I'm not a pro seamstress, so I'm somewhat at a loss... Re: [h-cost] mitts
Beautiful as always Bjarne! The lining is attached at the finger tips for gloves. The same would apply here. Attach at the top of the mitt and at the top of the thumb. Then attach it at the cuff. Leave the side seams unattached. Make sure you allow the fabric for the mitt and the lining to hang so that it stretches out first. You do not want something this delicate to have a lininig no longer fit because one or the other stretched out over time. Definitely right sides together on the thumb. :) Chiara On Thu, March 9, 2006 11:11 am, Bjarne og Leif Drews said: > Dear Dhiara, > Many thanks for your help. > I want to make them in ivory silk taffeta.
