Re: [h-cost] crowns and hats how do you combine them?

2013-08-22 Thread Marlo Peck
Wearing crowns all day every day is really an SCA thing. Normally you would
wear whatever was appropriate to your costume. Kings and Queens would wear
crowns when they were being royal, court, parades, etc. Nobility only wears
their crowns for formal ritual occasions like coronations.

Re: [h-cost] sewing machines

2012-08-15 Thread Marlo Peck
My parents bought me a Kenmore all metal machine for Christmas when I
was 14 I think, that would have been 1973. It still runs fine and my
mother-in-law is using it still. It does have a bad habit of notting
up the first stitch even after serviceing. But the service guy I used
most of my life retired and his replacement just doesn't seem to have
the same touch.

Five years ago I bought the Janome 6600P. It is all metal and has the
built in walking foot system, which I love. I don't know if I will
ever use all the fancy stitches, but they are there if I want them. My
main concern was I needed a good heavy duty machine with a start and
stop button since my feet don't work very well anymore. The built-in
button hole makes the button holes just a tad to big and the eylets
don't close properly, which is my only beef.

Currently I am looking into getting a Brother as a travel machine with
enough electronics to have my start and stop button and would make a
better button hole and eyelet.

As soon as I finish paying off the van I will look into gettting a
dedicated embroidery machine to play with. I am leaning towards
Brother because I think I could afford to get their top of the line
before I could afford a Bernina anything else.

Re: [h-cost] What's your dressmaker's dummy wearing today?

2012-05-19 Thread Marlo Peck
My poor dummy is in the closet with a broken shoulder right now, but there
are many projects scattered around my studio.

I have been working on a new fitter for myself and just finished a rough
made corset to use as a pattern for a pair of bodies test garment to wear
at a couple of events before I cut the dearly expensive coutil. There is a
black/grey striped tunic cut out with a contrast facing to sew the neck so
I can use it for a class next weekend on trimming corners and curves (which
I need to make some more samples for and write the handout). There is a UFO
blue striped linen Tudor kirtle that I made entirely too large that I have
taken apart to alter (I HATE alterations) and decided I should add some
trim while I had it apart. And lastly a cotton chemise to finish to go
with the kirtle.

On the beading table is a project to make a Byzantine style gemstone bead
link necklace and some pendants that need leather necklaces. Also a knife
sheath that needs to be repaired.

Finally I am reading *Dress at the Court of King Henry VIII* in preparation
for a research paper/class handout on *Methods and Materials of Late
Renaissance Doublets, Jerkins and Bodies *in June.

[h-cost] Gown Worn by worn by the Elector Moritz of Saxony (1521-1553)

2012-05-06 Thread Marlo Peck
Greetings to the list.

I followed the costume list back in the late 90s and after a long hiatus
have returned to my love, historic costuming. I started in costuming as a
theatre costume major back in the early 80s, but my scholarship and design
skills have never been as strong as my sewing and drafting skills. I also
got off on the wrong foot with my costumier at university and so and I
never got to follow my original career path. The SCA provides a reasonable
outlet in my area of Florida with a nice balance of the search for
authenticity and the joy of creating from your imagination.

I recently discovered the wonderful outfit of Elector Moritz of Saxony in
the collection of the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden (
http://skd-online-collection.skd.museum/de/contents/show?id=854746) in *Dress
in the Court of King Henry the VIII* and *Moda a Firenze 1540-1580: Cosimo
I de' Medici's Style*. Does anyone know of any further articles on this
costume? I found that the costume was examined and conserved in the
conservation workshop of the Abegg-Stiftung for an exhibition in 2008, but
the catalogue is in German. Has anyone seen this publication? Would getting
the catalogue provide me with any further useful images? I have access to a
few people with some German, but they would not have the specialized
vocabulary of historic costume.

I would really like to make a project for Art/Sci from this outfit, but I
really need some more sources and my scholarship has not improved greatly.
My Google-foo does not seem to be bringing me much insight.

Now where to find some yellow damask? . . .
