Re: [h-cost] Buttons

2007-10-18 Thread Traci
Speaking of buttons; I'm on the lookout for some specific ones and though
everyone on here might be able to help. They look sort of like a 4 sided
shield button with a tall point in the middle. Here is a little collage I
made of them; hopefully you can see the details well enough to get an idea
of their shape:

Any ideas on where I could get something like that in silver?

Thanks!

I've had good luck looking at second hand stores/ thrift stores for
Icelandic sweaters, L. L. Bean has had some with metal snowflake
buttons. A cheaper alternative than buying new buttons.

I bought a bunch of real metal buttons with a stag on them at either Jo Ann's
or Hancock but I can't remember because it was a while back. They came on a
card of 3 and were heavy mental with shanks. La Mode buttons perhaps? I went to
both Jo Ann's and Hancock's web site and did a search but didn't see anything.
(their web sites suck!)

I found some a year or so ago on Ebay. I'm sorry that I can't remember the
vendor's name but they were in Hong Kong and the shipping was pretty fast.
Prices were outstanding.

All,

I'm needing a good number of buttons in very short order.  Finding something
that looks ok for 14th century hasn't been easy.  Anyone have any
recommendations for a vendor?

Thanks.

This isn't my period, but I always envisioned a town crier to look a bit like
this guy with stockings and buckled shoes:

It would certainly be less work than all of those buttonholes on the gaiters.

And maybe some gaiters. I like the look of all those buttons up the outside
calf. But I do also have riding boots... but I'd have to put a cuff on them and
I don't know if he wants to fool with boots. Of course all the buttons on the
gaiters! Talk about fooling with something.

See, that's what he originally wanted. But a waistcoat sans coat? Nope.
[Maybe a sleeved one. And that seems a bit old fashioned to me for 1770's. We
also discussed a work smock and also a rifle shirt.] He can op to not wear
the
coat if he chooses. And, in an attempt to make the costume more interesting,
I like the idea of gaiters, or riding boots. Making gaiters is less
expensive than the right shoes. I really hate those fake buckle thingies! He
can also
op out of the gaiters if he chooses. I'm giving him a complete outfit. He
can wear it the way he wants, I suppose, but I want to do my part correctly.
It's for theatre [he's a story teller] however, not a museum, so I'm not doing
handmade buttonholes. [I may do all the top stitching by hand though, because
that really looks different from machine top stitching. There's also a trick
we did on "Interview with the Vampire" where you just quickly do a whip
stitch around machine buttonholes... not that close together. It just makes
the
buttonhole not look so machine-made neat. Still, I've seen hand made
buttonholes that are perfect and look like no human hand has touched them.]

I was wondering if anyone could point me in the direction of any sources
depicting unusual buttons/ button positioning on regency outergarments,
particularly spencers.

Thanks

Hi all those ladies who suggested or helped with suggestions for
button sources. The "gentleman" has found someone else to do the job,
now I have done a fair amount of time-consuming research, and no
longer needs my help. Why couldn't he have done that *before* asking
me, and sending me off to get samples etc. in the pouring bloomin'
rain when I was already very busy. Grumble... grumble. It doesn't
happen often, and the lovley lady whose wedding dress I am busy on,
makes up for people like him...almost.

Anyway, thanks for your time everyone.
