Correct. Not all processors have PAE support (and thus won't boot the
PAE kernels), hence the two different versions.

Kate (KDE based) with a CUPS printer has many print options including
custom margins, on Debian Stable (Lenny).

[Hampshire] netbooks, especially those with a Linux OS, and DVD

2009-02-23 Thread Lisi
I have been asked by a young friend whether it is possible to watch DVDs
(films etc.) on a netbook. I suspect that the answer is no, even with an
external DVD-ROM drive, because of lack of system resources. But I would be
grateful for some accurate information on this point from the list.

I have googled and cannot find a netbook at a reasonable price (one of the
reasons she is interested in netbooks is the low price) that has an internal
DVD drive. Would anyone who knows otherwise be kind enough to post a link or
tell me the model?

Meanwhile, she is keen on having one with a Linux OS, and is very taken with
the idea of using Tux to resurrect her present ailing laptop. She has gone
home with a selection of Live CDs to have a look. :-))

TIA
Lisi

[Hampshire] mkisofs boot catalogue & other problems

2009-02-23 Thread Stephen Davies
I'm trying to create a bootable CD of my customised image.
No matter what I do, the step on the process where you run mkisofs fails.

I am not alone (judging by the numbers of questions on the internet) in
having problems with this part of the process.

The first point is how do I create the boot.cat file? I can't find this
documented anywhere
If I can't create one then obviously it is going to be difficult if not
impossible to complete this step.
I tried copying one from a live cd but the mkisofs command still says it
can't find the file.

Has anyone come upon this sort of problem before?

Does this help Steve?

http://www.captain.at/howto-linux-boot-cd.php

Right down at the bottom it gives a command that appears to create the
boot.cat for you as part of the process - thought this might steer you
in the right direction with your efforts...

Re: [Hampshire] mkisofs boot catalogue & other problems

2009-02-23 Thread Stephen Davies
Sean,
Thanks for the pointers. It does appear that the boot.cat file is
created as part of the operation. It is a shame that neither the man
pages or the help pages state this fact.(well at least none of the ones
I have read).
This whole process does seem very hit & miss and very prone to error.
There is (IMHO) scope for making this whole thing much more robust but
as it is something that is not done at all by the majority of users.
Sigh
