Sounds like a project for the RepRappers ?

Could a 3D-printer be used to create a mirror image shell that the
working gutts could then be ported into ?

Way back in the remote past (ie 25-30 years ago) when I was doing quite
a lot of Cad work I used a thumb controlled trackball for the better
accuracy it afforded, then I got a tablet thingy with a pen and threw
the trackball away !!

Nowadays I use a Logitech M235 wireless mouse that fits in the palm of
my hand and have no problems using it.

I think it was a good suggestion to rest the elbow on the desk top but
there are too many other things in the way, like three
keyboards/mice/monitors plus various scrap pads, microfiche and
usually a cup of coffee that I have to avoid knocking over !

But I have moved stuff around a bit and will try using the mouse with
the elbow supported. Just as well it is a corner style desk that wraps
around me to some extent.

My experiences are pretty similar to Michael's.

Back when we used to sometimes hold meetings at Jamies I bought a couple
of trackballs cheap from them.

One thumb (Microsoft branded) and one finger (Logitech) controlled and
experimented with both.

I much prefer the thumb controlled device as I also find the finger
controlled one causes strain across the back of my hand.

I've since bought another Logitech thumb controlled trackball which looks
very similar to the one in the link above, and I find them both
comfortable and easier to use on a crowded desk.

However it is also true that I don't do much work that requires precision
mouse movements like art work, mostly it is just simple point and click

I have one of those, and experienced the same thumb pain Paul Stimpson
reported. I switched to a Kingston Orbit (not mentioned so far I
think), which comes with optional wrist support. It has a built-in
rotatable cuff that acts as a mouse wheel, and it's ambidextrous. I
feel more adept at positioning the cursor with it too. Amazon link

Interestingly I've not seen Bob's reply yet! I have preferred the Marble Mouse

I use one of those on the right hand side at home. Main reason being a
lack of desk space with this particular machine but even a change in
position compared with work setups help.

I use a Logitech Marble Mouse USB [1] on the left side at work as an extra
input with a conventional right side mouse. I use one of the auxillary
buttons to enable scrolling with the ball so don't miss wheels.

X still sees it as two X/Y wheels so diagonal scrolling is not as smooth as
it could be.

Same here (well, not three of them) - very nice piece of kit once you get

And it's kind of amusing watching if you ever have a co-worker come and use

Hi

We have the Logitech finger operated ones at work and I like the quality and
feel.
http://www.novatech.co.uk/products/peripherals/miceandtrackballs/910-000808.html

I've tried the thumb operated ones before but I always found them very hard on
the thumb joints and difficult to get precise positioning.

I think Logitech may also do hand held gyro mice that tug move in your hand
rather than mousing on a surface.

Cheers,
Paul.
