John,

Thanks very much the info. I know I have too little RAM on my present
machine but I have the max. (4GiB) it will take.

I will follow up those links. I plan to get a SDD for the OS so the whole
thing is a lot faster.

[Hampshire] Advice on specs for a PC suitable for digital negative processing.

2015-08-12 Thread Clive Woodfine
Having just read the similar thread about Gaming Machines can anyone
recommend a machine suitable for photography?

At present I use Darktable to get the most out of RAW files and I would
like to use Digikam for general organising. I find my present machine is
too slow if I have a lot of images to work on. It is several years old.

It has to be Linux friendly of course. Up to about a £1000 limit.

Re: [Hampshire] FTTC presentation

2014-11-30 Thread Clive Woodfine
Adam,

I am with TalkTalk and they now supply a Huawei HG635 Super Router that
connects directly to the landline. It works okay, I get 40 Mbs but I am
only 100m from the green box. The Wi-Fi is good and it has a USB 2.0 socket
which I can use with a Raspberry Pi raspXBMC to show my photos. This may
not help you as the router is specific to TalkTalk but Huawei may have
something similar for general use.

Clive

[Hampshire] Re Spam from me.

2014-05-19 Thread Clive Woodfine
Thanks for your replies. I have not had time yet to act on them in detail
yet but just a few points. My mobile phone is a San Francisco running
Android with a giffgaff SIM that uses O2 network I think. I use Linux Mint
16 on my desktop machine and Ubuntu 10.04 LTS on a Sony laptop but as gmail
is web mail I cannot see that this matters.

Doing a google search I came across this web site:-

http://arstechnica.com/security/2014/03/1-linux-servers-hit-by-malware-serving-tsunami-of-spam-and-exploits/

which states "10,000 Linux servers hit by malware serving tsunami of spam
and exploits Two-year-old Windigo may also have infected kernel.org Linux
developers ..."

I do not know if this has any connection?

I am off to change my gmail password and see if I can contact google about
it.

[Hampshire] Spam from me.

2014-05-18 Thread Clive Woodfine
This morning my wife received an email from me that I had not sent! It had
a link to a website.

I have just looked at my in box and it has 29 notifications of the
following type:-

"Mail Delivery Subsystem

Delivery Status Notification (Failure) - Delivery to the following
recipient failed permanently: clivewoodf...@beeb.net Technical details of
"

These are email addresses no longer current. It appears that my spam has
been sent by going through my contacts, though the (Failure) ones are long
since been removed.

What should I do? By the way my PC has been in Suspend mode for some time.
I plan to change my gmail password first off.

Many thanks all for your replies. It is as I thought. The main reason I
asked this question is that the frequency of these emails has increased
greatly over the last 2 or 3 weeks. Using the command "whois" indicates
that they mostly come from China or the Far East. To be expected I suppose.

[Hampshire] Router Port Scan

2014-02-09 Thread Clive Woodfine
Over the last couple of weeks or so my router keeps sending me emails
similar to the below:-

"TCP Packet - Source:122.226.102.31 Destination:(my internet connection) -
[PORT SCAN]"

The source is different each time but sometimes with the same 3 starting
starting blocks.

Should I be doing something about this? Do other people have similar scans?

Can somebody please give me some simple guidance.

Thanks Tony. I have had a quote from http://www.sendeancameras.co.uk/ of
around £120 + VAT and approx. £ 100 + £33 per shutter blade again + VAT.
from Camera Repair Workshop 9 Wharfside, Bletchley, Milton Keynes. Both
seemed very helpful. This is less than I expected but the price may well
rise when they have looked at the camera. I am posting this for reference.

Many thanks for the info particularly what to look for when searching.

I would also be keen to hear what is a good signal level on WiFi. I
get about -60 db near the router and much lower in a room that is
several brick walls away. I did find I was on channel 1 as all my
neighbours are so I have changed to 5.

Thanks Simon. I have LVM2 installed though it does not include
liblvm2app, in fact that is not listed in Synaptic. If I run the
command lvdisplay the boot partition on the 2nd. drive shows up okay.

I ought be able to get to Grub on the 2nd. drive with chainloader but

[Hampshire] Booting 3 distros.

2012-07-04 Thread Clive Woodfine
I have Ubuntu 10.04 and 12.04 on the first hard drive of my desktop
machine. I thought I would try Fedora 17 so I installed it on the
second hard drive and had it boot from that drives MBR not wanting to
risk not being able to boot the other two. I thought Grubs os-prober
on the first drive would find Fedora. It does not.

Any suggestions on how I can boot Fedora. I tried Super Grub Disk and
Plop Boot Manager but they also don't find it.

I have had an HP Photosmart 3310 until it recently died. I had no
problem setting up wi-fi. Printing and scanning worked fine. I would
go for HP.

My wife has an Epson SX425w to which I can print to over wi-fi but
have not achieved scanning yet. I don't recommend this printer for
Linux users.

We also have a Brother DCP-J315W. Brother have Linux drivers on their
web site but unfortunately the one for this printer is only 32bit and
I am running 64bit Ubuntu 10.04.

I would buy an HP.

Thanks Freaky.

They tried to sell me one of those in Comet but after Kodak took too
long to take digital photography seriously I have kept away from their
digital products. I am interested to hear your experience of this
printer.

The printer is mainly for my wife to use from 'Win 7' and a friend of
hers recommended an Epson SX425W so I bought one. I had trouble at
first getting it to work from Ubuntu 10.04 as the correct driver was
not listed in the Printer Setup. However after I downloaded one from

last night.

Many thanks for your prompt reply Andy. To answer your question, I

[Hampshire] Linux printer recommendations.

2011-12-10 Thread Clive Woodfine
My HP Photosmart 3300 All-in-One series has given up with "Ink system
failure" warning error code oxc18a0401. I have searched for this but
none of the solutions have worked. The printer is quite old so it is
time for a new one. My requirement is for wireless, Photocopying,
reasonable Photo printing and running costs. When I look at the
manufacturers compatible with Linux each seems to make hundreds so
recommendations would be greatly welcomed.

[Hampshire] GuruPlug ifconf problems.

2011-08-04 Thread Clive Woodfine
After a BaB meeting at Southampton some while back where I brought my
GuruPlug and fiddled with some setting because the University network
was down when I got home the Plug no longer worked on my LAN.

I have finally got round to trying to solve the problem.

When connected via a JTAG I get the following information from the GuruPlug.

After booting with no changes:-

sheevaplug-debian:~# ifconfig
eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr MACaddress

btmrvl_sdio_download_helper: request_firmware(helper) failed, error code = -2

Manually setting up ifconfig thus:-

sheevaplug-debian:~# ifconfig eth0 LAN_IP broadcast 192.168.2.255
netmask 255.255.255.0
sheevaplug-debian:~#

sheevaplug-debian:~# ifconfig lo 127.0.0.1
sheevaplug-debian:~#

Rerunning ifconfig gives:-

sheevaplug-debian:~# ifconfig

  inet addr: LAN_IP Bcast:192.168.2.255 Mask:255.255.255.0

  collisions:0 txqueuelen:0
  RX bytes:0 (0.0 B) TX bytes:0 (0.0 B)

sheevaplug-debian:~#

After this I can connect over the LAN to the GuruPlug and it works as
before but as soon as I reboot the Plug it no longer works!

My question is how can I make these changes stick? I have tried
changing these 2 files /etc/udhcpd.conf and
/etc/network/interfaces with the connection data but to no effect.

I do not know what the failed messages from dmesg mean but they do not
seem to stop the plug working as normal once ifconfig has been set up.

All help welcome please.

Re: [Hampshire] GuruPlug no longer boots.

2011-02-11 Thread Clive Woodfine
Thanks for that Jacqui, here is an update (ignore the pun).

I have just tried "apt-get update" and shortly afterwards I get this message
Archive directory '/var/cache/apt/archives/partial is missing'. It
then exits apt-get.
With aptitude I get the same message but it waits longer before
exiting. Yesterday after about a minute aptitude worked!!

resolv.conf contains
nameserver 8.8.8.8
nameserver 8.8.4.4
Which it has got from my router, Google name server.

A bit more info:
I remembered yesterday I ran the script 'sh /etc/rc.local' so did it
just now. The update has worked with aptitude though with some errors
due to PGP problems.

"Fetched 119kB in 2s (57.2kB/s)

I have no idea why the script has to be run now, it was not necessary
out of the box.

Re: [Hampshire] GuruPlug no longer boots.

2011-02-10 Thread Clive Woodfine
Adam, thanks for that web address but as far as I know I have no way
of viewing the boot process as I can only ssh in after it has booted.

The plug is working now, after a fashion. I can connect to it and see
attached storage devices but I am unable to do an "apt-get update"
whereas I did this when I first received it. I have just tried
"aptitude update" which also did not work at first but after about a
minute it started to download about 16 Mb. so perhaps I did not wait
long enough previously.

[Hampshire] GuruPlug no longer boots.

2011-02-09 Thread Clive Woodfine
At the last Southampton BaB I brought my Guruplug Server Plus but was
unable to connect as the Ethernet was not working. I have just find
time to try running it again I find it no longer boots. When plugged
into the mains only the power led lights up but none of the other 3
do. As far as I can see there is no way out of this without connecting
a JTAG board which I do not have and would be beyond my capabilities
anyway.

Any experts out there who could solve this for me?

I have written this from Jolicloud running on a USB stick on my eeePC
SD 701. This is the first time I have tried it. It uses the Chromium
browser. All OK so far. Wireless. OK. The only problem was getting the
USB installer to work. It complained it could not unmount the USB
stick before installing so I did it from a terminal. You have to
create an account or use your Facebook account if you have one.

I think it is a useful portable Distro but I will stick with Pupee'

I think it is deb based but it has it's own package unique manager
with limited software. You can try it by booting it off a memory

Except that I have uninstalled Opera! I have been having trouble with

Hi Al.

I have followed the upgrade instructions version to version but have
ended up with some errors. Since I have nearly run out of space on
this partition I have created two new ones Viz. / and /home and done a
new install of Ubuntu 9.10. All works fine but of course I have lost

I have a backup of /home and /etc from the 8.04 version. If I copy

more problems than I solve do you think?

I see ifconfig does not show screen resolution these days, should

Sorry, my mistake Andy, I was looking at the Domain Name address not
my assigned IP address which was in fact the Destination. Thanks.

No, I checked the router to see what IP TalkTalk had assigned me but
it was not that shown as Destination.
That rather puzzled me.

[Hampshire] Router secuity alerts

2009-05-13 Thread Clive Woodfine
I have been using a Netgear DG8346G v3 router for some time but lately
I have been receiving security alerts. Here are some examples.

If you already have a turntable connected to a HiFi amp then feed its
line out to an mp3 player that has a line in socket. I use a iAudio
Cowen bought from [1]. You then have a good quality sound_file.WMA,
unfortunately Windows format, which you can listen to directly or
transfer to your computer and convert to other formats.

Thanks for your suggestion. I find I copied the wrong attempt to
mount. I did use /dev/sdd1 later but to get the same error. I am now
running TestDisk from Knoppix 6 on a live DVD and have had to go to
the Deeper Search to find the correct setup. It did show my file
structure on the way so I think the files are still there. I am at the
point that shows the following.

1 * FAT32 LBA 01 1

I think 24-Apr-2007 is correct but why does it occur twice? Is this the problem?

Running fdisk /dev/sda gives

Command (m for help): p

Why is the end 1 cylinder short of 9729 shown by fdisk?

Advice from TestDisk users welcome.

John,

Thanks for suggesting TestDisk as did James Ashburner. I have been
reading up on this and am wondering if I should use dd to make an
image first and use this with TestDisk in case things go wrong. This
means buying another hard drive first though so the job has been put
on the "todo" list. As always other things have cropped up which seem
more important at the moment.

[Hampshire] Mounting external drive.

2009-02-26 Thread Clive Woodfine
Hi everyone,

I have a HDD in a caddy that I use to backup both Linux and Windows
data. I seldom use Windows now but found I needed to retrieve some
data from a backup. The external drive mounted okay in Windows and I
performed an edit on a .jpg file but when I decided I did not want to
save the changes on exiting the program a pop-up said the drive was
not formated did I want to format it. I said NO. Now the drive will
not mount in Windows or Linux. URGH##

Back in Linux dmesg | tail gives this when connected by FireWire.

r...@vaio:~# dmesg | tail
[ 815.603633] sd 5:0:0:0: [sdc] Write Protect is off

[ 815.627222] sd 5:0:0:0: Attached scsi generic sg3 type 14
r...@vaio:~#

Does "type 14" mean that the drive thinks it is a "14 Hidden FAT16
<3" (obtained from fdisk list of types)?

Running fdisk /dev/sda gives

Command (m for help): p

Disk /dev/sdc: 80.0 GB, 80026361856 bytes

The partition table appears to be intact and I suspect the data is still okay.

Is there a way of mounting the disk as a Hidden FAT16 file system?

Bryan,

I have now found a simpler method in my case. When I boot the wired
interface eth0 is active (even though it is not physically attached)
as shown by 'route -n'

cl...@vaio:~$ route -n
Kernel IP routing table
Destination Gateway Genmask Flags Metric RefUse Iface
192.168.2.0 0.0.0.0 255.255.255.0 U 0 00 eth0

0 eth1
0.0.0.0 my-router-address0.0.0.0 UG1000
0 eth0

If do 'ifdown eth0' to remove eth0 from the route table the wireless
immediately works! Why this should be necessary now I have no idea.

Bryan,

I have just had a chance to try the above commands on the problematic
laptop. Great, it worked and I have wireless connection. I am
surprised it did though as no encryption key is entered and ifdown
gave:

r...@vaio:~# ifdown eth1
RTNETLINK answers: No such process

eth1 is what the laptop calls the wireless connection. Wired is eth0.

Do you know why this works whereas the GUI network tools although
showing the correct details do not work? I can of course now ping the
router. I will investigate further when I have more time.

Anyway many thanks again.

Bryan,

I too only use WEP. I have tried without encryption but it makes no
difference. Possibly originally Ubuntu used the ipw3945 not the
iwl3945 from what I have read. I do not know how to go back to the
ipw3945.

Thanks Brian. I am not at the problematic laptop at the moment so will
have to try this later. I have not used the ip command so will give it
a go. Others are better qualified to tell you how to run these
commands at start up but you could put the commands in a shell script
which runs with just one command. In Ubuntu you can run commands from
"Sessions and Start-up settings". I expect Debian is similar.

You may find this useful [1]

What is puzzling to me is that the wireless worked perfectly for about
1 1/2 years and appears to work with other routers!

[1] http://www.debian-administration.org/articles/28

Phillip, Ubuntu uses the iwl3945 module for my wireless.

[Hampshire] Wireless problem.

2009-01-23 Thread Clive Woodfine
I had the wireless networking on my laptop working properly at last
Saturday's BaB.

For some time I have not been able to get it to work with my router at
home. Iwconfig shows all the correct values including the MAC address
for the router however if I try to ping the router the result is
"Destination Host Unreachable". I am using Ubuntu 8.04. It worked
perfectly in the past.

Running the laptop with Fedora 10 Live I can connect with no problem.

Why can't I ping the router? Googling as usual shows others with the
same fault but I have found no solution. Any pointers will be welcome.

I second that. I thoroughly enjoyed both talks. I will probably stick
with Picasa for photo management as I find it simple to use and have
got used to it though it does crash if I try to run a slide show from
it.

I may well be interested but my son told me yesterday that he may want
to get rid of his HP iPAQ 4150 now that he has a new phone. I should
be having a demo on Thursday. I will contact you off list depending

Thanks for the leads Martin. I will try them. The Tellico application
which holds my music info has an option 'Export to PilotDB' and I
remember someone some time back saying this is what they used.

All I want to do is to have a list of my LP/CD's with the information
about them available to search when I go into a shop to buy secondhand
ones.

There is no need to play anything or modify the database.

[Hampshire] Are PDA's a thing of the past?

2008-11-28 Thread Clive Woodfine
I am looking for a pocket sized device to hold my music database (held
in Tellico format) that I can synchronise using Ubuntu. I see 'PalmOS
Devices' listed under Preferences. Does this mean I need something
running the Palm OS. I gather this is not much used nowadays? Perhaps
I should buy something secondhand?

All advice welcome.

Thanks Dave.

I have just bought one on ebay for less than £4. Coming from the US (I
am not in a hurry) post free! I will believe it when I see it.

Thanks to the others who have replied but I am glad I made the
purchase before reading them as I would have been even more confused
by the hundreds to choose from.

When I go to 'Devices' at the top of the window running Fedora7 in
VirtualBox, 'USB devices' is greyed-out. I cannot find where to enter
