Re: [Hampshire] Slight Plea For Help

2010-08-11 Thread Benjamin Ashton
Dear Philip,

Yes I'm still using Zenwalk 6.0 on a Hi Grade notebook with just under half
a gigabyte of RAM (don't ask me any more questions about spec. - I haven't got
a
clue!).  I've tried putting on Zenwalk 6.2 and 6.4, Xubuntu and UNR all of
which
fail on the reboot.  Ububntu succeeded, but I think that the spec. is a bit low
for it.  I must say that I really like Zenwalk (if it worked properly!), it's
nice and simple, my wife can't DO with spending her time trying to understand
the technology, she just wants it to work.

The main problems are that I can't get a wordprocessor to work on it
without
glitches and (really annoying) about a third of the time we have to reboot as
it
doesn't seem to make the proper internet connection (I know what your thinking,
but it's nothing to do with the 'signal' strength as it fails to find any,
wired
or wireless, signals).

Anyway, as you can probably tell, I'm pretty clueless about it all.

Ben.

Hi Ben,

I can't come round, I am afraid. Actually, I could but not now. Also,
I have learnt that I am a rubbish teacher.

Anyhow, in case nobody else can help in person, here are a few
questions that would help the good folk here guide you a little.

* Are you currently still using Zenwalk?
* What alternative distro did you have in mind?
* Are you still using the same hardware?
* What are the hardware specs?
* What have you tried?
* How did it fail?

Hope this helps.

[Hampshire] Slight Plea For Help

2010-08-06 Thread Benjamin Ashton
Hi,

If anyone is willing then I could do with some help. Our version of linux
sort-of works but is also really annoying and seems to fail on some of the
basics. Any attempts that I've made putting on a different distro usually end
in failure.

We live up near Southampton University. If someone is close enough to drop by
to give advice then I would be most grateful. Payment could only be tea/coffee
and biscuits/cake and, of course, I will be your your humble servant, following
you to the ends of the earth, like the Black Moor in Kevin Costner's Robin
Hood. Unless that's a bit OTT and embarrassing.

Ben

Why don't you come along with your machine to the next Bring a Box meeting
in Southampton? We're a friendly bunch and I'm sure there'd be people willing
to help you out.

Cheers

Hi Ben

If you have another (newer?) machine or laptop try a live CD and have a look
around. You will find most of the modern live CD's are very good at detecting
hardware and you can be assured that you leave you working OS intact.

Recommended are:

Ubuntu http://www.ubuntu.com/desktop/get-ubuntu/download
Fedora http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/FedoraLiveCD
