This isn't Microsoft we're talking about. The Debian Bullseye release
right now is way more stable than I remember Windows .1 releases being.

There's no need to wait from a stability perspective.

Perhaps I should wait until it is officially released and allow
a little time for any bugs to be fixed. I understand KDE is still
included.

But would anyone hear it being said? A vacuum would stop dust
accumulation I suppose; not sure how effective heat radiation

It had dried out completely.

Just in case there is any interest in this: I did not like what
either Entroware or Juno Computers had to offer, and instead took
the existing machine to Unicorn Electronics in Portswood, where
Simeon Rush changed the RAM (I now have 2 x 4GB instead of 2 x 2GB),
cleaned the heat sink and replaced the thermal paste. I think dust
on the heat sink had led to hot air being directed at the RAM, which
may have been causing trouble before.

The computer then worked for a short time, when the monitor, or maybe
its power supply, failed. It was 19 years old, with a new power supply
in 2013. I now have a new monitor.

Simeon Rush says he could supply a SSD with an up to date Linux system,
an offer I may well accept at some point. I understand a new Debian
version has just been produced.

I don't think CPU speed will impact the ability to run multiple desktops.
Memory probably would. Easy to try, though!

Focus follows mouse depends on the window manager. I'm running XFCE, and
there it's Settings, Window Manager, Focus tab, select "focus follows
mouse". I haven't used any other desktop environment for probably over a
decade, but if you're not using XFCE then a Google search will probably
help you.

Hmm.. rather not. If I'm getting a new computer, I think one that is
actually new one might last longer.

At the moment, I am using a laptop with Ubuntu. I doubt it would be
fast enough to make multiple desktops practical, but please advise
on how to make focus follow mouse, that would be useful.

From reading about this, I think Ubuntu + full KDE just about is
kubuntu.

Thanks for all the comments. Still awaiting a response from

FWIW, I stopped using the main distribution of Ubuntu ages ago, because
I dislike their desktop, in favour of xubuntu, which uses a more
traditional desktop.

For quite a while I installed ubuntu, then jumped through the hoops to
get to a "traditional"  desktop, before realising that xubuntu (XFCE
desktop) did it all for me.

If you do really want KDE, kubuntu may be a better starting point. I
haven't tried it, so can't comment other than that.

YMMV

You may already realise this, but any Linux distro can do all of those.
Konqueror is the only one even vaguely related to KDE, and it
(Konqueror) can be installed on any desktop, such as XFCE - it doesn't
need to be KDE. Just fyi.

Hi Peter,

I think your best bet is to get a barebones computer (Novatech?) and buy a
magazine with a cover DVD, then install from that.

Good luck!

I have decided that I can modify my requirements. It seems that
getting a computer with Debian already installed is not possible.
There was a company in the USA that would do that, but they have
gone out of business. In any case, I now think it is not Debian
that provides what I want, but KDE: multiple desktops, focus
follows mouse and Konqueror. Ubuntu can be made usable.

Thanks Aidan. I have been exploring those. As far as I can tell
from their web site, Starlabs only do laptops.

Entroware: have something interesting, looks just like a monitor,
but incorporates a computer as well. It has a sufficient number
of USB ports. Web site says it is out of stock. I have sent an
enquiry about that.

Juno Computers: have something that might do except the only
video output is HDMI 2.0. My monitor is D-Sub or VGA1.

As for overseas, I'm not keen on trying to import directly, and
no telling how long it might take.

Here's some links that might be worth exploring (in no particular order)

UK, Linux OEM
https://starlabs.systems/#

https://www.entroware.com/store/

https://junocomputers.com/uk/

Overseas, Linux OEM
https://system76.com

https://slimbook.es/en

https://www.tuxedocomputers.com/en#

https://kfocus.org/

There's also the option of someone like Novatech -
https://www.novatech.co.uk/  and then just do your own installation of
whatever Linux distro you want.

The existing machine was made by DNUK, I think they changed their
name and may well have vanished. I have just found out that a local
repair/construct place, Portswood Computers, has closed down.
Internet searches produced some links, but they either don't work
or lead to Windows dealers.

So, where can Linux machines be obtained these days? I would be
grateful for any advice.
