[HCDX] More bandscans from the Norwegian and North Seas

2019-08-17 Thread Volodya S
On a sea day sailing from Rotterdam to Cork, Ireland, so a bit of time to
compile some further bandscans from our stateroom on the HAL cruise ship,
the Zuiderdam. A reminder that my equipment is very basic: A small
portable, the XHData D808 (modified for MW use by Gary Debock) and a few
feet of random wire across our balcony. Reception has been very good
overall, with noise not much of an issue. A pleasant change to scan the SW
bands, and actually hear a lot of pretty decent stations. Look out,
though. China seems to be virtually everywhere (similar to other places on
this planet I've visited in recent years)!Any errors are my own.
Comments always welcome! 73, Walt
PS: A good MW session is still to be compiled. Sorry for the delay!

ASCENSION 17830, 1745-, BBC Aug 13 Poor level in English to Africa. A bit
too late in the evening to propagate well this way. (Salmaniw,Zuiderdam
Norwegian Sea)

ASCENSION ISLAND 15400, 1737-, BBC Aug 13 Good to very good reception with
African accented English, beamed to W Africa. (Salmaniw,Zuiderdam Norwegian
Sea)

AUSTRIA 17570, 1745-, AWR Aug 13 Moosbrunn must be a relatively
underutilized transmitter site. Sure hope it doesn't follow Sentech's lead
and call it a day! AWR programming in Maasai to E Africa at good level.
(Salmaniw,Zuiderdam Norwegian Sea)

BOTSWANA 13630, 1733-, VOA Aug 13 Excellent reception in Portuguese to S
Africa, but carrying on to the Norwegian Sea. News program.
(Salmaniw,Zuiderdam Norwegian Sea)

BOTSWANA 15580, 1737-, VOA Aug 13 VOA in English at good level. This site
gets out very well, as I often hear it as well at my home in Victoria, BC!.
(Salmaniw,Zuiderdam Norwegian Sea)

CHINA 11650, 1717-, CRI Aug 13 Found another Esperanto frequency from
China. Again, I didn't ID the language until looking it up! Very strong
signal. (Salmaniw,Zuiderdam Norwegian Sea)

CHINA 11680, 1718-, CRI Aug 13 Very strong signal in listed Swahili.
Everywhere on the dial you'll find CRI!. (Salmaniw,Zuiderdam Norwegian Sea)

CHINA 11690, 1718-, CRI Aug 13 OMG, yet another Chinese transmitter, this
time in French at excellent level. (Salmaniw,Zuiderdam Norwegian Sea)

CHINA 11825, 1724-, CRI Aug 13 Croatian programming with Chinese lessons at
very good level. (Salmaniw,Zuiderdam Norwegian Sea)

DENMARK 5840, 1705-, World Music Radio Aug 13 From this time, ENE of the
Faroe Islands, and continuing to Bergen, Norway, and leaving Bergen, WMR
was well heard only using the whip on the XHData D808 receiver. Mostly
non-stop music with occasional short IDs for WMR or World Music Radio. I
have not heard any further information, ads, or URL or email addresses
noted (unlike Radio Northern Star on MW and 5895 kHz). No sign of 15805,
so likely a weekend operation only?. (Salmaniw,Zuiderdam Norwegian Sea)

EUROPIRATES 6293, 1912-, multiple Aug 15 I did a quick bandscan looking for
Europirates during our North Sea crossing between Bergen, Norway and
Rotterdam, Holland. There were many! Amongst them, were as follows:
6293 strong, with a Dutch folk song. 6275 weak (and seems // to 6293),
6265 fair/good with non-descript music, 6225 very weak, 6205 very strong,
and should be Laser Hot Hits, supposedly from Ireland. I'll be interested
to see whether I hear them during our 3 port visits in Ireland! Also:
6200 very strong (and may be Radio Discovery), 6320 fair (and may be
Radio Sovereign), 5780 good level with piano music (and may be Radio
Harmony), and 5140 fair/good (and may be Charleston Radio International.
Definitely, no shortage of Europirates, when, at least on the WCNA, there's
not a whole lot to be heard anymore in the 42 m pirate band.
(Salmaniw,Zuiderdam Norwegian Sea)

FAROE ISLANDS 531, 1707-, Kringvarp Foroya Aug 13 I highly suspect they are
running their full 10 kW, as they are extremely well heard right across the
ocean north of the Faroes. Heard well for 2 days preceding and 2 days
following, from leaving Iceland to leaving Norway. On the 15th, mid day in
the North Sea ESE of the Faroes, not heard during the day, so I'm thinking
they must have a northerly beam. (Salmaniw,Zuiderdam Norwegian Sea)

FRANCE 11530, 1715-, Radyo Denge Aug 13 Clearly hearing this off the back
end at fair to good level in listed Kurdish as well as middle Eastern
sounding music. SW Skeds, however, also lists Grigiopol, Pridnestrovie as
another possible site for the same program. I'm assuming it's Issoudun,
but I could be wrong. (Salmaniw,Zuiderdam Norwegian Sea)

FRANCE 11945, 1726-, NHK Radio Japan Aug 13 To South Africa in Japanese
with music, but only poor to fair reception. (Salmaniw,Zuiderdam Norwegian
Sea)

GERMANY 17720, 1745-, AWR Aug 13 Another AWR broadcast, this time from
Nauen and in Oromo to E Africa at very strong level. (Salmaniw,Zuiderdam
Norwegian Sea)

KUWAIT 11575, 1717-, VOA Radio Ashna Aug 13 Listed as such, in Pashto, at
excellent level with talk. (Salmaniw,Zuiderdam Norwegian Sea)

KUWAIT 15540, 1737-, Radio Kuwait Aug 13 Very strong rece

[HCDX] My final log report from the North Atlantic

2019-09-07 Thread Volodya S
As promised, I’ve attached the final report from our fantastic cruise to
the North Atlantic Ocean, including Newfoundland, Labrador, Greenland,
Iceland, Norway, Holland, Ireland and now disembarking in Halifax
tomorrow. I was most impressed with how well the little XHData D808
performed, both on MW and on SW. LW, it was a little deaf, but passable.
FM reception (and the AIR band) was also more than adequate. Our noise was
not much of an issue, despite being on a large cruise ship, with just a
short length of random antenna wire slung across our balcony. As always,
any errors are mine alone, and I always welcome corrections/comments. I
had forgotten how well SW signals propagate to Europe in abundance,
compared to the paucity of signals to the west coast of NAm. Also fun were
the huge numbers of pirates in Europe on SW…fun! So, please do yourself a
favour and pack a small portable along your next trip/holiday. My radio
interests were again reinvigorated! 73, Walt Salmaniw

189 ICELAND Gufuskalar 300 kW RUV, Aug 5 2236 - Fair to good signal. While
sitting at the back of the ship, shivering!!! Learned my lesson. Despite
layers and layers of blankets, I was still chilled to the bone. I had
started too early. Subsequently, I listened later, and from my balcony,
which provided some protection from the bitterly cold winds!.
(Salmaniw,Zuiderdam East coast of Greenland)

570 GREENLAND Nuuk 5 kW KNR Kalaallit Nunaata Radioa, Aug 5 2200 - Heard at
good level, // to stronger 720. Nuuk is much further north, and lower
power compared to 720. The latter is well heard everywhere we sailed in
Greenland. Not so for the others. For some reason, I have 590 as // to
570 and stronger, but it's 650 which is listed as the 3rd Greenlandic.
Hmm. I suspect that 590 was in fact VOCM St John's. (Salmaniw,Zuiderdam
East coast of Greenland)

684 SPAIN Sevilla 200 kW RNE, Aug 6 0006 - Weak with Spanish talk, but
strong at 01:02 recheck. A powerhouse into the Greenland Sea.
(Salmaniw,Zuiderdam East coast of Greenland)

710 CANADA Clarenville 10 kW CKVO, Aug 6 0105 - Good reception with oldies
music and VOCM ID. (Salmaniw,Zuiderdam East coast of Greenland)

720 GREENLAND Simiutaq 10 kW KNR Kalaallit Nunaata Radioa, Aug 6 0009 -
Very strong, but with transmitter problems, that lasted several days, with
intermittent cutting out, making speech choppy. 720 was very well heard
throughout our time in Greenland, and far, far stronger than the other 2
transmitters on 570 and 650 which were only heard locally. No wonder
they're so well heard in Eastern North America. Interesting Greenlandic
language. Can't be confused with anything else!. (Salmaniw,Zuiderdam East
coast of Greenland)

747 CANARY ISLANDS LasPalmas 25 kW RNE, Aug 6 0010 - Weak music, but fair
to good with Spanish talk on recheck at 00:37. (Salmaniw,Zuiderdam East
coast of Greenland)

792 SPAIN 5 transmitters of 10 and 25 kW RNE Radio Nacional, Aug 6 0110 -
Oldies English music (Cupid), then Spanish talk at good level.
(Salmaniw,Zuiderdam East coast of Greenland)

882 UNITED KINGDOM Washford 100 kW BBC Radio Wales, Aug 6 0017 - English
talk, poor to fair level. BBCWS listed at this time. (Salmaniw,Zuiderdam
East coast of Greenland)

954 SPAIN Madrid 50 kW Onda Cero, Aug 6 0112 - Fair reception in Spanish.
(Salmaniw,Zuiderdam East coast of Greenland)

981 ALGERIA Ouled Fayet 300 or 100 kW Chaine 2, Aug 6 0021 - Some chop
heard, with Arabic music and presumed Arabic speaker. Presumed logging.
(Salmaniw,Zuiderdam East coast of Greenland)

1044 SPAIN 2 sites of 10 and 50 kW SER, Aug 6 0112 - Good reception with
music, and // to 1080. (Salmaniw,Zuiderdam East coast of Greenland)

1053 UNITED KINGDOM Droitwich 500 kW TalkSPORT, Aug 6 0024 - Fair level
with English sporting stuff. (Salmaniw,Zuiderdam East coast of Greenland)

1125 SPAIN 5 sites 10 and 12 kW RNE Radio 5, Aug 6 0028 - Good reception
in Spanish. This one gets out well!. (Salmaniw,Zuiderdam East coast of
Greenland)

1152 SPAIN RNE, Aug 6 2359 - 5 time pips at the TOH, presumed Spain with
multiple locations. Poor to fair. (Salmaniw,Zuiderdam East coast of
Greenland)

1179 SPAIN OR CANARY IS SER, Aug 6 0030 - Either Spain SER or Canary Is SER
transmitter (50 or 10 kW, and 25 kW for Tenerife) music at 0032, and
Spanish talk at 01:14. Fair level. (Salmaniw,Zuiderdam East coast of
Greenland)

1215 UNITED KINGDOM Multiple sites up to 200 kW Absolute Radio, Aug 6 0032
- Surprisingly only weakly heard here in Greenland. (Salmaniw,Zuiderdam
East coast of Greenland)

1290 UNKNOWN unid, Aug 6 0035 - Poor to fair signal with Latin music.
Curious to know who this might be!. (Salmaniw,Zuiderdam East coast of
Greenland)

1296 SPAIN Valencia 50 kW COPE, Aug 6 0037 - Strong signal into the east
coast of Greenland!. (Salmaniw,Zuiderdam East coast of Greenland)

1305 SPAIN 4 transmitters of 10 and 25 kW RNE Radio 5, Aug 6 0037 - Spanish
talk at fair level, but s

noted, and KKOH resumed at 07:06:45 or so. Thanks, Paul! 73, Walt

Wolfie, the Lypivka site is exactly the place I passed. It's on a main
highway from the western border of Ukraine to Lviv, and easy to see from

knowing that this had been a very important place during Soviet times.

Really clean, excellent reception into Victoria, BC on the first frequency,
2750 kHz with CW, mostly well decoded on MixW (and Fldigi). Started
exactly to the second at 06:00, and scheduled for the next hour. Mostly
on 2750, but also on 3.35, 3.15, 5.10, and 6.90 MHz, so check all of these,

I'm hearing KJJR on all my outdoor antennas. I then turned on the
XHDATA D-808 Gary Debock modified and there it is as well at 06:18 with

was really strong. Almost as if the engineer turned down the signal
strength. Now audible in the background. Most interesting!73, Walt

Despite scheduled 9.6 MHz for 22 to 23 hour, they are still continuing with
the rising tones on 3.2 MHz up to 22:08 UTC as I type this. Wonder whether
Paul Walker is aware up there in Alaska! 73, Walt

[HCDX] HAARP on now 3.2 MHz

2022-10-23 Thread Volodya S
Thanks to Nick Hall-Patch for pointing out that HAARP has actually been
experimenting now for a few days according to this schedule (above and
beyond Amanda Dawn Christie). Presently active with sweep tones on 3.2 MHz
and heard at fair to sometimes good level into Masset, BC Lots more
scheduled over the next week or so. 73, Walt

[HCDX] Masset musings from mid October

2022-10-30 Thread Volodya S
My apologies for not getting this out sooner, but life got in the way! In
any case, a good and varied selection of loggings from Masset, BC, off the
NW coast of BC and due south of the Alaskan Panhandle. Conditions during
the earlier weeks were excellent on the shortwaves, but deteriorated during
my last few days there. Nick Hall-Patch, renowned MW DXer joined me for
the final 6 days there, where we overhauled all of my antennas and
reconfigured the remote shack and the SDRs. In addition, we constructed a
new 110/290 deg DKAZ antenna which is larger and quieter than a
previous DKAZ which I constructed about a year ago. As always, any errors
are mine alone, and comments are always welcome! 73, Walt Salmaniw

ALASKA 3200, 2120-2240, HAARP Oct 22 Tuned in and sure enough, there HAARP
with sweep tones pretty much continuously to past 22:00 (they were
scheduled between 21:00 and 22:00 to run something called a VLF
Amplification) until off somewhere around 22:40. Fair, sometimes good
reception. (Salmaniw, Masset, BC)

ALASKA 5400, 0619-, HAARP Oct 23 Listening to first night of Amanda Dawn
Christie's experiment via HAARP. Excellent level, following each
frequency, or combination of frequencies: 4.85, 4.80 (marred by CODAR),
5.4 MHz, 9.5 MHz, 3.3 MHz, Very strong into Masset, BC. (Salmaniw, Masset,
BC)

ALASKA 5800, 0415-, HAARP Oct 23 Following HAARP tonight. They started
this hour centered on 4800 kHz, with buzzy carriers every 20 kHz over a
span of about 400 kHz. As soon as they went off this channel, they jumped
to 5800 kHz. Very strong into Masset! Cut suddenly just before 04:20 UTC,
and 30 seconds later, started up centered on 6800. Slightly weaker. They
then proceeded to move up as per their schedule to 7.35, 8.05 (7.35 center
from 04:29:40 to 04:40, and 8.05 MHz from a few seconds after that to
04:50, and then switching to centered on 9600 (actually 9595) and presumed
they'll go to the top of the hour. This test is called the satellite
instrument calibration. Test ended, sure enough just before 05:00.
(Salmaniw, Masset, BC)

ALASKA 9600, 2345-, HAARP Oct 22 Noted an open carrier with intermittent
on/off, lasting a few seconds at a time. This one was scheduled from 22:00
to 24:00, and was called GIOS HF Ocean Scatter, and was very strong into
Masset. Then, near 00:00, a very wide band buzz centered on 9600 and 25
kHz on each side began continuously. I can only assume it's them! Off at
00:05:40, but back again at 00:06:09. Off at 00:11:40. Back at 00:12:05.
This test is called AERA Radar. Scheduled from 00:00 to 01:30. (Salmaniw,
Masset, BC)

ALASKA 11870, 1637-, KNLS Oct 18 Very strong in Mandarin, but still less
compared to KNLS in Russian at same time on 9580 (S9 + 30 to 40!). Clearly
both transmitters are operational and seemingly at full power. (Salmaniw,
Masset, BC)

ALGERIA 7200, 0506-, Radio Algerienne Oct 19 Excellent reception with
modern Algerian vocal. Very nice signal and modulation. (Salmaniw, Masset,
BC)

ALGERIA 9450, 0530-, Radio Algerienne Oct 20 Unlike the other night,
nothing on 7200, but very strong, clean signal in Arabic with news at 05:30
UTC. (Salmaniw, Masset, BC)

AUSTRIA 6155, 0553-, Oesterreich Rundfunk Oct 20 Superb reception over the
Pole in German. If Austria closes, I'll miss this site for sure, with the
diverse number of users. Let's hope it doesn't happen!. (Salmaniw, Masset,
BC)

CANADA 6030, 0544-, CFVP Oct 19 Good + reception with Cuban jamming in the
background, but otherwise a solid S7 to S8 signal. Calgary's Funny 1060
AM. 1060 is audible, but poor with cochannel. Puts out a great signal for
100 watts!. (Salmaniw, Masset, BC)

EGYPT 9440, 1800-, Radio Cairo Oct 18 Listed in Italian. Carrier came on
at 17:58 Strong signal but again without any modulation. I can only
imagine how good a broadcaster they could be if they would only fix their
transmitters!. (Salmaniw, Masset, BC)

EGYPT 9812.581, 2058-, Radio Cairo Oct 17 Distorted but strong signal with
hum. Was almost readable 20 minutes ago, but no longer. Listed in French,
but surely doesn't sound like it now. Continued until off just before
21:39 UTC. (Salmaniw, Masset, BC)

EGYPT 9902.519, 1701-, Radio Cairo Oct 18 Turkish is listed from 17:00 to
19:00, but alas nothing but a buzzy and wobbly transmitter off-channel.
I'm presuming this is Egypt. No audio otherwise heard today. The pain of
it all! Rechecking at 17:39 and the transmitter is now on 9902.56 without
any audio. At 18:36 .574 and perhaps some really weak audio audible.
(Salmaniw, Masset, BC)

GUAM 12080, 1627-, AWR Oct 18 Beautiful Indian music at great strength (S9
+10 to 20). Non-English speach at 16:28. Giving AWR's postal address in
India. Then e-mail. English sign off concluded the transmission, 'From
the Beautiful Pacific Island of Guam,...100,000 watts,...'. So nice to
have a full ID heard!. (Salmaniw, Masset, BC)

GUAM 15200, 1646-, KTWR Oct 18 Ukrainian religious programming at fair to
good level. (

Re: [HCDX] [WOR] [bdxc-news] RNZ Pacific schedule change today

2022-11-11 Thread Volodya S
Here's an example of what I've experienced. First, back in the early
1980s, during the height of the Cold War, my wife and I spent 6 weeks in
New Zealand. All I brought along was a tiny analogue Sony SW portable.
With only the whip, Radio Liberty came booming in, at local level. That
was a head-scratcher, as back in Canada, it was a real DX target, and
always battling Soviet jamming. There wasn't a hint of the latter in New
Zealand. Poking around a globe, I realized that all signals from Spain
(the former site of most of the RL transmitters to the FSU were located)
were heading towards me at the antipode in New Zealand. Another example
was in Maui. In the late afternoon, Radio Botswana on 60 meters would be
very well heard with a simple length of wire. Again, the Hawaiian Islands
are approximately antipodal to that region of southern Africa. 73, Walt

[HCDX] Another very successful evening into Europe

2023-04-17 Thread Volodya S
Once again, I was very pleased to hear many low powered European hobby
stations tonight, as well as some DRM transmissions not often heard from
Masset, BC. My 450' Beverage, aimed due north once again produced great
results! 73, Walt

CHINA 17830, 0504-, CNR Apr 18 Some copy with frequent dropouts. // 17770
with near 100% copy. (Salmaniw, Masset, BC)

DENMARK 5930, 0518-, World Music Radio Apr 18 Well, here they are with pop
music, and a lot of splatter, of course, from 5935 WWCR. Fair otherwise.I
need to check the power level again. (Salmaniw, Masset, BC)

GERMANY 5920, 0515-, HCJB Apr 18 Poor to fair reception in German. I
suspect it would have been a bit stronger earlier in the evening for me.
Not clear whether they are using 1 or 10 kW. (Salmaniw, Masset, BC)

HOLLAND 5939.97, 0521-, Radio Peipzender Apr 18 I'm not 100% certain this
is the Dutch low powered station, or actually Radio Voz Missionaria.
Perhaps the later. Non-stop vocals, and sounding rather religious, so
quite possibly the later. Fair/good except for WWCR splatter. (Salmaniw,
Masset, BC)

HOLLAND 5955, 0511-, Sunlite Radio Apr 18 Even better tonight, especially
at and just before 05:00 UTC with Adele's Skyfall, then numerous ads in
Dutch at 04:59. Really impressive for 1 kW or less!. (Salmaniw, Masset, BC)

HOLLAND 5970, 0528-, Radio 208 Apr 18 Very weak, but in the clear hear, and
seemingly // to an Icelandic KiwiSDR with EZL music. Fair amount of static
crashes. Playing a Whiter Shade of Pale by Procol Harum. Not clear on the
power either. Overall a most productive evening!. (Salmaniw, Masset, BC)

ROMANIA 11740, 0509-, Radio Romania International Apr 18 A really powerful
signal. I'm stymied that I can quite get any audio. French is listed at
this time. Pure red on my KiwiSDR waterfall in Masset. S9 + 10 to 20 as
well! So close!. (Salmaniw, Masset, BC)

UNITED KINGDOM 5875, 0502-, BBCWS Apr 18 100% copy with BBCWS news in
English. This is rare to have such perfect copy!. (Salmaniw, Masset, BC)

A very big thank you to Stig, for sharing those details with me and the
group. I use his monthly list of European Private Shortwave Stations, an
excellent resource in my pursuit of low powered stations, from my excellent

PS: I didn't mention Radio Delta International on 6020 (and 11730) on the
weekends. This station is usually the most reliable around 05:00 UTC
Sundays into Masset. Do they run 1 kW?

2023-04-23 Thread Volodya S
Wow, I don't think I've ever experienced anything like it, but the SW bands

AM band, though is doing just fine, so it's not a failure of my Perseus SDR

[HCDX] Looking for a decent Software VOX recorder

2023-06-24 Thread Volodya S
Expanding my horizons in Masset, I've added a RSPdx to the mixture of
remote receivers that I have there. The beauty of the RSPdx is it's wide
spectrum including the FM band. I added a nice Yagi antenna, courtesy of
Patrick Martin from Seaside OR. Initially, I had it up about 25 or 30 feet
off the ground, and rotating it, I was pleased to receive 3 or 4 Ketchikan
stations (about 150 km to the north), 5 or 6 Prince Rupert stations
(slightly closer to the east), and the 3 CBC outlets on the Islands, as
well as very low power translators of commercial stations in Masset.
Mostly, though, the band is pretty empty, which makes for the possibility
of receiving meteor scatter and e-skip on FM.
I've experimented with leaving the squelch out and just recording for
hours on-end, and indeed, signals do come in for a few seconds at a time,
but this is very tedious. Alternatively, I've tried squelch and feeding
the signal into my Total Recorder Pro. Unfortunately, this otherwise great
software for recording does not have a VOX option, so this means scrolling
(actually clicking) 30 second intervals over up to 24 hours of recording to
locate those tiny spikes in signals. There has to be a better way. Does
anyone have any suggestions regarding a good VOX (voice activated)
recorder...software that is?Also, are there any groups out there
devoted to e-skip and meteor scatter FM DXing?

[HCDX] Some loggings from Masset, BC

2024-06-19 Thread Volodya S
Good evening, everyone. I arrived in Masset last Friday for a 12 day
visit. Usually, this entails a lot of maintenance work to our 4.4 acre
ocean-front property, including on the various antennas we have here on the
property, as well as the numerous SDRs. However, I made it a priority to
also listen, including live which I did getting up before 2 AM and
listening overnight. I was most delighted to hear how very strong Radio
Vanuatu was propagating my way. So here's a sampling of what was heard
mostly overnight, including Voice of Mongolia, an old friend.
73, Walt Salmaniw Masset, BC

AUSTRALIA 6230, 1336-, VMW Jun 19 Good reception with marine forecast by
Australian English accented OM. Cochannel in AM is the presumed Sound of
Hope jammer. (Salmaniw,Masset, BC)

BOLIVIA 3310, 0936-, Radio Mosoj Chaski Jun 19 Fair reception with talk,
but a fair amount of summer static to make listening comfortable. Not sure
of language, but should be in Quechua. Almost all talk during the 10
minutes of monitoring. Checked some South American kiwiSDRs, and not a lot
different than my reception. (Salmaniw,Masset, BC)

CANADA 6218.570, 1318-, Iqaluit Coast Guard Radio Jun 19 Perhaps on the
wrong frequency, and a bit distorted. I caught the tail end of the
broadcast, including, 'This is Iqaluit Coast Guard Radio, out', and off.
Checking later, the nominal frequency is 6218.6. (Salmaniw,Masset, BC)

CHINA 13810, 1052-, CNR Jun 19 100% decode on this channel. // to 15760
also with perfect copy. (Salmaniw,Masset, BC)

JAPAN 11815, 1408-, NHK Radio Japan Jun 19 Excellent reception of the rare
English Radio Japan broadcasts, especially direct from Japan. A story
about a gay couple in Thailand. (Salmaniw,Masset, BC)

JAPAN 5920, 1308-, Shiokaze Jun 19 Excellent reception with their English
broadcast (weekly) and // to 5965, also very strong, but latter has weaker
cochannel Chinese station. Female announcer is a little difficult to
follow with her thick Japanese accent. (Salmaniw,Masset, BC)

MARSHAL ISLANDS 1098, 1057-, Radio Marshalls Jun 19 Very nice reception
with pleasant Islands music. Besides splatter from 1090, reception is
otherwise very acceptable. A good night to put my various antennas to the
test, and they all performed very well, including a new home brew 20'
vertical, and a K9AY array from Quiet Radio (David Evans) in the UK, who
confirmed that I was the first user in North America. Thanks, Dave! (who
is a worthy successor to the late Andy Ilkin of Wellbrook Communications).
I continued to listen and indeed at 11:30, a male announcer came on,
presumably with close-down announcement followed by the Marshalese National
Anthem. Open carrier remained. (Salmaniw,Masset, BC)

MONGOLIA 12014.873, 1259-, Voice of Mongolia Jun 19 Same buzzy transmitter
at strong level and the characteristic VOM off frequency. Japanese listed
again. I again noted a digital (RTTY or NAVTEX like) signal, this time
above the channel on 12016.5 and 12017.5, just like on 12085, so I wonder
whether there's a relationship between VOM and the digital signal?.
(Salmaniw,Masset, BC)

MONGOLIA 12084.874, 1045-, Voice of Mongolia Jun 19 Strong reception, but
modulation similar to Radio Cairo's with muddy audio and a loud transmitter
hum easily seen on multiple frequencies on the waterfall. I can recognize
that it's Japanese. Too bad, as it would produce armchair copy otherwise.
A long time since I've tuned them in! Returned at 10:58 to hear the
sign-off announcement mentioning Voice of Mongolia, and giving website.
Transmitter cut at 11:00 UTC. I'm pretty certain that this is coming off
the back of their antenna, as the azimuth of the transmitter is 116 degrees
SE towards Japan. Received well on all my antennas here in Masset.
(Salmaniw,Masset, BC)

NEW ZEALAND 6224, 1350-, ZLM Taupo Maritime Radio Jun 19 Very good
reception with machine generated marine forecast. Accent is easier to
follow compared to the Australian meteo broadcast!. (Salmaniw,Masset, BC)

NORTH KOREA 6140, 1055-, KCBS Jun 19 I don't know what the issue is with
the DRM from North Korea. Signal is strong on both this channel and 3205
but zero decode. (Salmaniw,Masset, BC)

PERU 4810, 0946-, Radio Logos Jun 19 Almost good reception if it wasn't for
the CODAR below and digital hash above the channel. Music. Improving when
rechecked at 09:59, with music continuing. Waiting for an ID at the TOH.
Might have been one but very short, so not 100% certain. Continues speaking
past 10:04. Rechecking at 10:29, the digital noise above the channel is
gone, so much easier to hear now. (Salmaniw,Masset, BC)

TAIWAN 6279.848, 1345-, Sound of Hope Jun 19 Characteristically off channel
and not sounding anything like CNR at good level at this time. A rarity
that there's no CNR jammer on channel and the strength of the signal. Back
and forth between rapid speaking woman and male. Presumably in Mandarin.
Found a parallel at 13:56, also on offset channel of 6214.937 with no
ja
