Re: [HCDX] Radio Australia Gone

2017-01-31 Thread Paul
Gone for now, it's possible that they will be back. It seems that a similar
scenario that played out in New Zealand with the closure of Radio New
Zealand's shortwave service in 1976 is playing out in Australia. The reason
was the same as with Radio Australia - budget cuts.

There was a storm of protest from within New Zealand and overseas and a
month later the government relented and reinstated the service. This was in
the days when the station was located in Wellington and were using war
surplus 7.5 KW communications transmitters. Programming on the reinstated
service was a relay of the then National Programme network (now RNZ
National).

You can find a full write up here:

http://www.radiodx.com/articles/station-profiles/pacific/rnzi-our-internatio
nal-voice/the-history-of-radio-new-zealand/

Hopefully New Zealand's international voice will continue but when one
considers that Radio New Zealand's funding has been frozen since 2008 when
the present National Government came into office there is no telling how
long they can continue. We've already seen the mothballing of the analogue
transmitter. Age was given as the reason but when one considers the cutbacks
in programming domestically and the sale and lease back of their Auckland
building, budget considerations are liable to have been the true cause.

And when checked at Brisbane Queensland also the three NT services on

[HCDX] Radio Australia special transmissions

2011-02-05 Thread Arnaldo
Just as it did after Cyclone Tracy, Radio Australia's Shepparton base has been
providing short-wave radio broadcasts into cyclone ravaged parts of north
Queensland.
Radio Australia transmission manager Nigel Holmes said the service had been
relaying ABC Queensland Local radio on two short-wave services into the region
hit by Cyclone Yasi.

``We got the request at 12.45 pm on Tuesday and we had it up and running in 31
minutes,'' Mr Holmes said yesterday.

The request was based on the experience with Cyclone Larry in 2006-(sheppnews)

[HCDX] Radio Australia begins Burma broadcasts

2009-11-15 Thread Arnaldo
Radio Australia, the ABC's international radio broadcaster, has begun
broadcasting to Burma.
The Burmese language service began Monday morning, with two news broadcasts.
Radio Australia's Chief Executive, Hanh Tran, said Burma's elections next year
and increased international attention on the military-led country prompted the
decision to start the new radio service.
This is the first new language service for Radio Australia in more than 15
years, he said.
Mr Tran told Radio Australia's Connect Asia program that the creation of the
Burmese service expands the broadcaster's brief to provide impartial news and
information to the region.
Our audience has always been those who are in developing countries. Their
access to information is limited, for reasons of poor infrastructure, or state
control, or sometimes the reasons relate to stability in the region: he said.
We don't go along the activist path of regime change or anything like that. In
fact the service we provide Burmese people is no different from what we provide
people in China, in Vietnam, those countries (that) are having very good
bilateral relations with Australia.
The broadcasts will be transmitted to Burma seven days a week on shortwave
frequencies 12010 and 17665.
The Burmese service will begin as a 15-minute news broadcast on shortwave,
satellite and online at 5:30 am local time, and repeated three times across
peak morning listening times.
More broadcasts will be added in the evening as the service grows.
Cherry Mangrai, producer of the Burmese service, says though access to the
Internet is limited in Burma, she expects a wide audience to tune in via
shortwave.
A lot of people would have transistor radios that they can tune in on
shortwave, and that is still very very popular in the whole of Burma, so my
audience is I think, 50 million plus, she said.
Ms Mangrai says there currently are four shortwave radio services broadcasting
into Burma, two from the United States and two from Europe.
Of Radio Australia's addition to the field, she said: Coming from this region
closer to Burma, it would be very good, would be very refreshing for the people
in Burma.(australianetworknews.com)

Re: [HCDX] Radio Australia DRM 5995 kHz

2007-04-22 Thread Craig Seager
Earlier in the week, Nigel Holmes at RA told me that 5995 kHz uses DRM
1200-1400 UT on 010 deg to PNG and 12080 is DRM 1100-1200 UT on 080 deg
(into SW Pacific). Both from tx's at Brandon. Nominal power is 8 kW but
did want to run as low as 2-3kW.

The relatively low power (and the beam headings) might explain the poor
results. I can't get anything useful on 12080, and 5995 only produces
occasional snatches of audio. The high bitrate (23.54kbps) no doubt
doesn't help.

Nothing here on 1431 or 1701 either (central west of New South Wales).
Can't even hear DRM hash on 1431; 1701 seems to register something in
Dream periodically, but not enough for any on-screen information
definitely no audio yet.

Craig Seager, Bathurst (Icom R75, Dream software)

I've been monitoring 12080 kHz for the last week
and have not seen any signs of DRM transmissions.

However, even the AM signals from Radio Australia
on 12080 kHz are very weak at my location, and in
our evenings there is an extremely strong signal
from Vo Mongolia on 12085 kHz that would swamp
 any weak DRM on 12080.

5995 kHz is still switching to DRM at 1200 UTC
 today.

Aussie DXers on the MWOZ list have reported DRM
on mediumwave 1431 1701 kHz this evening, but I
cannot hear any signs of those signals here at my NZ

[HCDX] Radio Australia plans India launch

2007-02-09 Thread Mukesh Kumar
Radio Australia plans India launch

Summary: Australia's public broadcaster, the
Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) is planning
to launch Radio Australia into India this year,
according to ABC managing director Mark Scott. The
announcement was part of wide ranging changes to the
ABC's international division announced yesterday.

Full Story : Australia's public broadcaster, the
Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) is planning
to launch Radio Australia into India this year,
according to ABC managing director Mark Scott. The
announcement was part of wide ranging changes to the
ABC's international division announced yesterday.

ABC's International division will now include Radio
Australia, Australia Network and International
Projects.

There are opportunities to improve the effectiveness
of our services to Asia and the Pacific through
greater collaboration and this new division will help
to achieve that, Scott said.

Our aim is to both grow our own audiences; and to
ensure the ABC makes a positive contribution in
working with other broadcasters to develop effective
media in the region.

This division will build on the success of Australia
Network and Radio Australia in delivering content to
international audiences that builds an awareness of
Australia and Australian attitudes.

Radio Australia continues to increase its reach with
a launch into India scheduled for 2007, while
Australia Network reaches in excess of 12 million
viewers per month, with its mix of news, current
affairs, education, lifestyle, drama and sport now
available in 20 million homes across Asia, Pacific and
the Indian sub-continent.

This division will also be accountable for the ABC's
increasing role in the delivery of support for
broadcasters in the Asia-Pacific regions through
specialist advice and technical assistance, mentoring
and training activities. The most significant of these
activities are funded by Australia's development
assistance agency, AusAID.

Clear accountability for these contracts, and
Australia Network contract with the Department of
Foreign Affairs and Trade, will be maintained under
these new arrangements.

Mr Scott said the new division of ABC International,
Corporate Strategy and Governance would also be
responsible for other corporate strategy and
governance support functions.

The restructure includes the appointment of current
Director, Corporate Strategy and Communications,
Murray Green, as Director, ABC International,
Corporate Strategy and Governance. Current Chief
Executive of Australia Network, Ian Carroll will
become the Director, ABC Innovation.

[HCDX] Radio Australia at 0500

2006-04-26 Thread Walter Salmaniw
AUSTRALIA 15160, 0505-, Radio Australia Apr 27 Surprisingly good reception in
an otherwise almost dead band at this time, several hours after my local
sunset. Shepparton is listed with 100 kw from 0500 to 0800. Heard equally
well last night. Plenty of parallels noted including: 15515 (Shepparton 100
kw) S7, 17750 (Shepparton 100 kw) S4, 15240 (Shepparton 100 kw) S8 to S9, 13670
(Shepparton 100 kw) S6. Impressive number of transmitters, all from
Shepparton! No luck with the other sites listed (9660 and 12080 from Brandon).
Should propagate quite well to North America at this time. (Salmaniw,
Victoria, BC)

sign/off at 0700 UTC on 15160 and 15240 kHz. None of the QRGs is listed in WRTH's
recent
update.

Another not listed frequency is 13630 kHz, heard by me this morning (MAY 7) in English
between tune-in at 0600 and tune-out at 0705 UTC. Probably ex 13605 kHz as nothing
heard
on this frequency in my location in the middle of Europe.
