It would be a mistake to ignore the Netbeans framework 
(http://www.netbeans.org/). It's open source and a new version has been 
released. It would give you a running start at a new GUI rather than 
starting from scratch... in the same way Mozilla would give you the same 
head start...

essential functions work so far only on dumb terminals.

A web based application interface using Mozilla can be almost completely 
platform neutral
and thus could be implemented completely in Linux - or not depending on what

cannot run under Winewhich necessitates the emulation otherwise it 
would not be needed at all. So we either wait for the Java client or

I wouldn't knock WMA/AVI too hard because MS is smart and they made the
encoder free.  But if you have any basic movie editing or video
recording software, it should do MPEG - and that's generic enough for
everyone without costing any coin.

What are you recording?  Your PC screen or actual Video?
