Re: [H] GFX cards under $200
Radeon X1950XT 256 gets my vote for the best bang for the buck award. Just under $170 and it will kick serious ass in any game @ 1600x1200 or less (XP drivers are very mature, don't diddle me with DX10 and fuck Vista until SP1). AnandTech, HardOCP, PCStats etc. are some of the best review sites. Oh yeah, unless you're rich, save your $ for your retirement fund or get an 8800GTX and enter the elite zone. j maccraw wrote: ATI X1950 Pro & XT's from Sapphire, VisionTek, PowerColor, etc... get my vote on either bus. Re: [H] Looking for advice on new system.
SLI is pointless to consider unless you have money to burn (better to get a Roth IRA IMHO). A 550 watt PSU with greater than 80% efficiency would do just fine for what you want. Apparently my fellow listers haven't been reading too much about P35 and DDR2/DDR3 support. P35 is an excellent chipset but only slightly superior in performance to 965 with current DDR3 sticks. Second, the pin count between DDR2 and DDR3 while being exactly the same have a different notch. Therefore, you either buy a mobo that takes DDR2 memory knowing that you can never upgrade it in the future to DDR3 or you buy a DDR3 mobo knowing that you can't use DDR2 and will pay a serious price penalty for it. Finally, it seems that Kingston and not Crucial makes the fastest DDR3 memory @ the present time. Dude, P35 will not give you any future proofing unless you bite the bullet and get a mobo with DDR3 memory slots. So, how much money you can afford to spend is the most relevant question @ this point. Oh yeah, most reviews have Gigabyte mobo's rated best for Intel CPU's. SLI is still immeasurably stupid. 8800 GTX's and Ultras are cheaper now and the prices keep falling. Yeah I'd rather run one video card. Esp, where one card can ruin two in SLI. So looks like so far we have: P35 Express chipset board E6850 (3.0GHz) dual-core DDR3 Memory 8800 GTX or Ultra nVidia card Anyone make a call on what brand I would pursue for P35 chipset? I would probably take crucial memory since I am setup as a reseller. Who makes decent nVidia cards nowadays? I am using a MSI @ the moment. Antec PSU? Wattage?
[H] Make a Audio Image file
I want to back up my retail audio CDs. I don't want to rip them into wav tracks. I want to image the CD to a iso file. A perfect copy. I have tried to do this Winimage 10, Nero 6, and it doesn't seem to be available. Is this even possible? Is there a special program that will do this? It seems like if you can use DVD decryptor to image a DVD you ought to be able to do the same with a audio CD... or not???
[H] Mac help please
I need to copy word files from a Power PC Macintosh Performa 6400//200 Running System 7.5.3 to floppies. I don't know anything about Macs. I assume there is some kind of file manager and I would just copy like I do in Windows right... probably icon, probably drag and drop? Is there a my document folder, or something like it. How about compression. Will there be built in compression that will allow me to zip of the contents of that folder... they do have directories right? zip it up and split it up into floppy size? If so how would I do this... with the mouse?
[H] Phone question
Do newer camera phones use a USB plug. Do they all just plug into a USB port like any other camera?

Cool--but--You really don't need to blow the money on DDR3 at this point. P35 does a nice job with DDR2, and it'll save you a load of money. Frankly, I wouldn't touch DDR3 until DDR3-1600 or faster memory is reasonably priced. DDR2-1066 memory can be had pretty cheap anymore. > > Who makes decent nVidia cards nowadays? P35 is the only way to go. It has ICH9 which is the fastest southbridge to date. RE: [H] Looking for advice on new system.
For gaming, I'd go E6850. More speed per core is almost universally better than more cores for current games. I anticipate that will change, but it'll remain that way for a while. Hands down, P35 Express, unless you just absolutely need SLI. The 680i has a fantastic feature set, but I've just generally had bad luck with itnetwork adapters that are either slow or disappear and require a reboot, general instability after running for a few months, high temperatures (not just NB, the SB runs blazing hot too), immature drivers/BIOS (these have largely been worked out on the BIOS side, but c'mon), poor quad-core overclockability, very finicky memory controller, etc. Greg > -Original Message- > From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:hardware- > [EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Michael Decker > Sent: Monday, July 16, 2007 1:48 PM > To: The Hardware List > Subject: Re: [H] Looking for advice on new system. > > Which CPU would you choose for a gaming PC, the Q6600 or the E6850? > For the chipset, would you go with the P35 Express or nForce 600i? > Why? > > On 7/16/07, Greg Sevart <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > > With the Intel quad-core Q6600 (2.4GHz) hitting $266 next week > (7/22), and > > the new E6850 (3.0GHz) dual-core running at $266 now, along with the > rather > > nice P35 Express chipset, why would anyone even consider an AMD-based > > machine for anything but an ultra-budget box? > [snip]
