I hear ya, was just saying I don't like that
particular change. Both are great cases
and their not Antec which mean I don't cut of my nose
to spite my face. =)

Entire height of case as 5.25" bays was an idea I
liked at lot starting with CM's
Stacker series.

I guess I understand your commens, but I am running 2 optical drives and 4
SATA drives in removeable enclosures, a floppy drive, and then 4 more SATA
drives internally. I could add 4 more internal drives before the space in
maxed out. Remove the floppy (only used for F6 installation of drivers), and
I have another external bay available. The icydock takes up 3 bays of 7
total, leaving you with 4 external and 7 internal. That's a lot of storage
space. I find it more than sufficient. Of course, YMMV.

Very nice. I've found three versions, it seems:

From their website:
1) http://www.icydock.com/product/images/MB455-back-large.jpg

and some pics from vendor websites:

2) http://www.performance-pcs.com/catalog/images/products/MB455_04.jpg
Can't see much of this one.

3) http://us.st11.yimg.com/us.st.yimg.com/I/yhst-59368419805889_1996_28468677
This one looks like two drives are powered by 4 pin molex connectors
(mis-spelled "prots") and three are by sATA power cables. This design
looks like better air flow too.

We'll just have to see...

Best,
Al

If only they had not screwed with the Armor's 11-bays
to make the plus I'd have
considered it. I was very purposeful it wanting all
5.25" bays so *I* could choose
how I want to utilize my space. Like knowing I could
put something like this in later
without running out of 5.25" bays for other devices.

Re: [H] another recommendation

2008-04-19 Thread j maccraw
Seriously I won't look back because I did not want the
Nvidia chipset to come back
and bite me on the ass for CPUs or some other surprise
as has been the history with
680i. Thought long and hard on the video issue and was
going to get some nvidia video
card hoping they rethought their artificial SLI only
on Nvidia chipsets but decided
the 3870X2 was too good to pass up since someone else
was paying. Hell this rig runs
Crysis so well, I don't think I have anything to worry
about performance wise but if
I did there is always a second 3870X2 which is
CrossfireX and as good as SLI IMNSHO.

Ok, back to this thread...

Difference is my suggestion has a motherboard that
won't be an antique in 2 years.
Want to to save money that won't bite you later, then
buy a cheaper case & psu! We
already know that you and I differ on "what's worth
it" along with "can part x be
trusted".

Re: [H] UPSes

2008-04-19 Thread Bobby Heid
Thanks for all of the suggestions. I had looked at APC for new batteries,
but they wanted about $70. I had figured I might as well get a new unit if
the battery is that much. I'll look around locally (didn't think about
that) and check out some of the places that were mentioned is your
responses.

One question. Do the surge suppression parts in a UPS wear like those in a
surge suppressor do? If so, I'm thinking it might be time to replace the
unit anyway. I have had it for about 7 years or so and once had the
batteries replaced in it under warranty when it puffed up.

Thanks,
Bobby

Re: [H] Just ordered me one of these!!!

2008-04-19 Thread Naushad, Zulfiqar
The performance can easily be upped by upgrading the paltry 512Mb ram to 2Gb.
Which I will do.

Also in addition, HP uses some old SiS NIC driver which can also be easily
upgraded to the latest version from the SiS site which also improves
performance.

U see, I am actually sharing my external 500GB hard disk via a NSLU2 device
which is dog slow, but works stably.

So either way, it's a great upgrade for me.

Also, I didn't want RAID and the headaches associated with it, I actualy prefer
the method MS uses. You just select the directory you want to be protected and
it will (I think use shadow copies) on that directory and will automagically
distribute it over several drives.

One good thing for me is that I can also use my existing 500GB in the pool.

So the version I got has 500GB and I have an external 500GB, so that gives me
1TB, I already have my eye on 2 more 750GB so that will give me 2.5TB of
storage.

I don't need all my directories redundant. I just need my pics, a couple of
important documents, music and maybe some animes, the rest is wellnon
important.

They are very nice. Can't see ever buying a case with a door(s) again.
And I find these doors rather yonical in appearance.

Also, I don't care for the top of it. But these are just personal taste
issues. Looks like a very well ventilated case.

Nothing I've found is as nicely
finished inside as the Ultra m998 Mid Tower .

Should be at my doorstep in a couple of days.

Can't wait to play around with it!! I am seriously in need of redundant

This will be much better for my needs.

A top fan makes more sense if the power supply is at the bottom. Since
the PS is obtaining it's air from that space, why would one want to
increase low air pressure in it's area?

The drive cage(s) are a nice setup. Not being tooless isn't a problem
for me. Most tooless setups feel flimsily to me, especially PCI card area.
