Yes, it supports a 4GB map, but that wasn't my issue. I wrote that
all devices with memory, including your video card(s) are deducted
from the total of that map.

Got a link to the KB article? Makes me wonder if that's related to not having PAE
since XP32 is most definitely supports a 4GB map:

http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa366778.aspx

My current system is PAE enabled, 2GB RAM w/ a 512MB video card (512MB*2 actually)
and I'm not showing an RAM loss. Why would I @3GB given the 4GB limit?

I disagree, there is lots of articles about this including in MS
Knowledge base. I have actually experienced the drop after installing a
video card. In Control Panel\System\General Tab I started out with so
much ram and then installed a video card with twice as much RAM and when
I checked again my system ram had dropped an appropriate amount.

If you are running 32 bit OS, then a one GB card will take another
512megs of addressable memory.
this means if you are currently showing 3GB of RAM with a 512meg
video card, and you install a 1GB video card then you will reduce
your system memory by 512megs.

It was happening with all versions for me.
3.0.4, 3.0.3, 2.0.0.18 etc.
It happened while trying to navigate within a web site, paticularly

Drivers are definitely a good place to start, but if the laptop is
older (since it originally had Win ME installed) there's a good chance
that as someone earlier said that it's an ACPI/bios problem. ACPI code
is rather notorious for being buggy, especially on older boards. Doubt
it would make a difference, but if there are any BIOS updates, you
could give that a shot as well.

If you are right then this is a common issue. He has to press the FN
and un-suspend key and it will come right back up. These keys should
be labeled as such.

Do you mean hibernation or suspend? Because when the laptop is
hibernating, it's power is off. When it's in suspend mode it's still
powered up, albeit only enough to keep the contents of RAM active.

And it can't be the button itself if long-press activates soft-off which is a
hardware implemented response to the button.

I assume you mean suspend since hibernation results in soft-off like shutdown but on
powering back up the boot load redirects to the hibernation file for that boot.

Sounds like APM/ACPI whatever is not doing it's job. Could also be a bad driver is
interfering with the initial suspend-to-ram or suspend-to-disk activity preventing a
clean suspend. My Dell C840 has done this to me from time to time, it at least
responded to the power-resume press but then would seize & not resume.

I've seen where the wrong driver version can lead to 100% CPU on wake, prevent going
to sleep, etc... So I'd be checking to be sure all the driver are the laptop
manufacture's latest recommended releases, and once it works with them move on to the
generics if they are newer.
