Re: [H] Stupid question about ECC RAM

2009-10-19 Thread DSinc

Thane,
Can not say that ECC removes the danger of bad RAM. ECC does allow some
correction (protection) for bad RAM and just truck on.
Bad RAM is BAD RAM. ECC is better than what most of us us normally, but
I do not believe it is the complete band-aid.

And, most of us are not willing to spend the $$$ or boot-time on ECC
RAM. JMHO.

Mission Critical (?) usually calls for ECC RAM. Worst case is ECC
Registered! I own ECC-Registered! Fine. (thanks Chris!)

If the m/b is designed ONLY for.
then all bets are off should you choose otherwise.

What I have found/seen is that ECC RAM just means/takes longer time to
boot up. The machine/OS/whatever needs to check/test ALL available RAM
spaces. (My opinion).

But, ECC RAM does allow some operational RAM recovery (either bit-wise
or byte-wise), I think The "Server Guys" will know more.

Me? I just put up with the boot-up time of counting/checking all 2GB of
RAM in BIOS, before, W2KServer boots..

4me, ATM, happy camper; happy server!
Best,
Duncan

Agreed. ECC memory can detect and fix single-bit errors. It can detect but
not correct double-bit errors.

You're correct Thane. It removes one of the problems that could creep up.
It's more expensive, but it will save you in the long run!

[H] Odd CHKDSK issue

2009-10-19 Thread Thane Sherrington
I have a Vista computer in that is having trouble booting. I removed
the hard drive and attached it to my test computer (running PE) and I
can see the drive and SMART says it's ok, but when I run chkdsk /f
(or /r) it comes up with a bunch of "deleting index..."
messages. Normally once this completes a drive will come up clean,
but this time, each time I run chkdsk, I get the exact same
messages. I tried using True Image to clone it to another drive and
the other drive has the same issue. I also tried Ghost, and xxcopy
with the /clone switch with the same results. Any ideas how I can
clean up the corruption?

You were right about the change in the BIOS being the culprit. It won't
run with ACC set to Hybrid and Auto but for some reason the first time I
reset the CMOS it still wouldn't power up. Everything is running peach
now and I thank you for your help Mr. anonymous. Have a nice day man.

Subject: [H] Dead PC, Help...

I just installed a Phenom II X2 545 in my game box that I bought from
Ebay and it was working fine until I made a change in the BIOS setting
ACC to Hybrid and Auto then rebooted and it just died. Am I right to
assume that if the CPU, memory, or video card died it would still power
up just not POST? I strongly suspect my PSU because it has a flaky
on/off switch so I just leave it on all the time and use the front power
button to shut down if necessary. I'm kinda bummed right now...

Re: [H] old trooper dies

2009-10-19 Thread Tim Lider
Duncan,

PC Power and Cooling power supplies are awesome, even now they are still of
good quality. 11 years of all day running is a good run, no other power
supply probably will not last t hat long.

Story:

A friend of mine and I built basically the same computer over 3 years ago. I
got a PC Power and Cooling 750 watt Silencer Power Supply and he got a OCZ
equivalent at the time (He thought the cost was too much for the PC Power
and Cooling power supply). Well, he had to replace his power supply 1 year
afterward and ended up paying more for a power supply over time.

The only thing is I have updated the motherboard 2 times, updated the sound
card 2 times, and video card once. Oh! Forgot I replaced the DVDR as well.
It's nice to have a power supply to last longer than the components in the
PC.

Also, BTW all drives in system are Seagate, and no failures. Well I did have
a WD Raptor 150GB it failed 6 months ago due to Bad Sectors. All Seagate's
are still running like champs for 3 years, even the 750GB models.
