Re: [H] WoW Cataclysm & my new game pc

2010-10-08 Thread Scoobydo
My take on the hardware reviews that I've read and the fact that I own a
GTX 460 and an HD 5770 is that dual 5770's in a crossfire config are
currently the best bang for the buck if WOW has been given a profile by
AMD's driver writers. You'd have to check that out and see. On the other
hand, the GTX 460 is a superior architecture and the best bang for the
buck in a single card config (not near as fast as 2 5770's though). The
only problem you might run into with either setup is your resolution. If
you want AMD's Eyefinity 3 monitor setup you're better off with a single
HD 5870 and if you can afford such a game system you would probably be
amazed by it. My 24" monitor recently took a crap on me just weeks out of
warranty after 3 years and I bought an ASUS 21.5" 1080P that only uses 31
watts when running. If I were to get a 3 monitor setup I would like to
burn as few trons as possible and such a monitor would be excellent for
that purpose I believe. If you're running a single 30" monitor either card
config discussed above would probably be adequate but not optimal. Hope
that helps you..

Yeah, OC'd or not, Corsair's H50 is inexpensive and high performance (the
new H70 by all accounts has loud fans according to HardOCP and it's forum
members). Very compact for a less cluttered interior and the one I'd buy
if I were to be in the market for a new CPU cooler..

Re: [H] WoW Cataclysm & my new game pc

2010-10-08 Thread Gary Jackson

Good Morning,

At this point, I would say about 6 weeks ago. I used an Asus Rampage II
Extreme MB that a friend bought and decided not to use. So he gave me a
very good deal on it. I initially planned to OC the system, and my
understanding was that it was a good MB for that. I decided against the OC
at the last minute as at 3.06 Ghz, I felt the cpu was fast enough for my
needs and I always seem to have heat issues with my builds. So far that
hasn't been the case with this one...thankfully.
I had asked about the SSDs as I thought possibly you were going for a
RAID 1 with them, which as I understand it isn't a good idea, even with
TRIM. But I have no experience as of yet with them so I am not 100%
positive either.

Regards...Gary

If you are considering dual GPUs for WOW, I would check the tech
support forums on Blizz first. I have seen some people have problems with
that setup, but since I am not using that I never really looked very
hard. As I understand it, WoW is more CPU intensive then GPU.

[H] Simple database program

2010-10-08 Thread Thane Sherrington
I'm looking for a really simple database program for a client who
wants to keep track of contacts. Basically he wants to create a list
of contacts and then be able to print out a subset of them (by last
name or whatever) and he doesn't want to learn something "complex"
like Access. Any ideas?

Re: [H] Backing up Win7 woes - an update with more woes

2010-10-08 Thread Soren

Thanks for the input so far on this.

Suffering from a bad knee injury keeping me immobile even for computer use for
weeks, the status now is:

The laptop is still an HP G62 i3 dual core w/4GB RAM, and 320GB SATA 7.200 HDD.
BIOS is upgraded to latest version. HP support isn't helpfull, to say the least.

Booting from a normally usable floppy on CD (floppy disk emulation), it only
generates this exact error message:

"Type the name of the command interpreter (e.g., C:\WINDOWS.COMMAND.COM)
A>"

Using the Redirect command at this stage is new to me, so here I am completely
blank...???

Well, after getting an external USB floppy drive ('only' 45 US bucks here in DK...), the laptop now boots properly from a floppy disk, except no CD/DVD drive is detected.
I tried this with no less than eleven diferent boot disks, and all were no-go. "The CD driver isn't loaded" is the common error message.

The second - and maybe most important thing - is that while it's possible to start ghost.exe from this USB floppy drive, the error message is "...no drive to clone
(11093)..." appears. Nice :)

This could be caused by either the fact that a CD driver is not loaded, or that
a 2003 Ghost is not supporting newer systems. A Google search didn't bring me
any closer.

Any solutions?

Any similar clone programs out there?

To say it straight, forget about Linux's dd, and Acronis in this case, as I
want absolute reliablity, and neither do serve that.

I know Symantec is working on a new version of Ghost that works within Win7, so
this could be a common problem?

Any suggestions?

If SATA's the problem (seems obvious), where do I find a boot floppy for
this??? (bootdisk.com doesn't fix this)

Thanks.

Hello Duncan,

Most BSOD's are caused by malware on the computer interfering with the network
settings, and not by poor drivers as many tend to believe.

The best possible (free) solution to this is:

www.safernetworking.org - pls donate a few bucks to keep him running...

Remember to update the .def files.

Else, Symantec 360 is a premium home solution, but this one should be installed
on an absolutely clean system.

OK, my newest install seems to have a "DRIVER" problem. Fine. The only
"drivers" loaded are for the m/b, and/or my chosen A/V SW? I can accept
that these default drivers might be behind the curve, but I can NOT read
this in the rather terse responses.

I am still working thru trying to get the basic m/b drivers up to date.
Wondering?

 Soren,
Sorry to hear about the knee and immobility.
Did you really mean?:
http://safer-networking.org

I recognize this as the home of SpyBOT Search&Destroy. I use to use
this, but moved to MalwareBytes in-concert with my Business version of
ESET (v2.7) A/V. Yes, I know that this is old code, but I have not seen
any exploits since 2006; but I do not surf widely, or wildly.

Yes, can spin SpyBOT S&D up and see what's what. :)
Best,
Duncan

Hello Scoobydo,

Thanks, this does help me, I will use a single monitor setup as my
Samsung 244T serves me and i have limited space at this time. I did
drool though as I read your email. My current card is a 4870 but I
plan to keep it in the system I will be upgrading. I have had some
issues with it but it served me well for the most part. I would like
to go back to nVidia tho.

Hello Gary,

Indeed, I will probably go single gpu as I won't see much benefit in
WoW, as I would in getting the almost very best CPU, memory, and SSD.
