Re: [H] new system build suggestions or upgrade

2010-07-29 Thread Jason Carson
I have a similar system as Bobby accept I have a Rampage II Extreme mobo
and a Nvidia 295 vid card. So far this system has run every game I've
thrown at it at high framerates using a monitor running at a 1920x1200
resolution. I've been very happy with this system.

I don't really know what to recommend because it's hard to make a
recommendation on what you should buy without knowing the maximum amount
of money you are willing to spend. Let us know this and we can be more
helpful.

I have been really happy with my Intel Core I7-920 on an Asus P6T mb. I
have an Nvidia GTX 285 video card that is pretty nice. Although the
 latest
4xx series probably blows it away at the same price. I am running Win 7
Ultimate 64 with 6GB RAM. I am planning on upping the RAM to 12GB soon.

It is time for me to upgrade. If I were to piece something up. What is the

 E6300 @1.86 on an Asus P5Q Deluxe, 4GB DDR2 and a Radeon 1600 vid. I know
its dinosaur crap from around 2007 before my brain injury. I am recovered
enough to start playing some games again, etc. Should I upgrade the proc,

new again. If I start over what is the collectives recommendations? Price

[H] 5.1 sound problem

Hello all,

I am having a problem with sound.

Here is my setup. I have a Soundblaster X-Fi Titanium Fatal1ty sound card
and am running Win 7 Ultimate 64 bit.

My headset, when plugged into the optical out works perfectly.

Here is my problem. I bought a 5.1 speaker system and in my sound
configuration it is setup as 5.1. However, when I test the sound it is
only coming out of my front right/left speakers. The subwoofer, the rear
left/right or the center speaker there is no sound. I am using the
Creative software tool to test this. Anyone know what could be wrong and
how I fix it?

I was playing some games (Dirt 2 and Batman) and some of the voices of the
characters are not coming though. However, if I play music on Winamp or
Windows media player sound comes out of all speakers and the subwoofer.

Thanks

Here are 4 things I should add...

1)My headset, the Tritton AX Pro (which is a 5.1), works fine when I test
the rear/center/subwoofer.

2)If I set my speakers in the control panel to 2.1, then sound comes out
of my rear speakers.

3)I have checked all the connections and everything seems setup correctly.

4)Games like Dirt 2 during the introduction have talking but I can't hear
it though my speakers, although it sounds fine on my headset.

I am at a loss as to why rear/center/subwoofer don't work when I test it
when the speakers are set to 5.1 in the control panel. I also don't know
why the voices in games such as Dirt2) are not coming through properly.

I received your email.

I'll try disabling DKIM this weekend when I have time and see if that is
the problem.

It looks like your mailserver is inserting a DKIM signature, and the
listserv software is not stripping it and/or re-signing it as it should be
if any of your evaluated headers have been modified. When you're getting
 the
message back that is purportedly from you, that evaluation could be
 failing
and your mailserver may be dropping the message.

I'd try disabling DKIM and see what happens.

Of course, you may not get this message either, since I also DKIM sign on

 But from the MS article:

Note When the physical RAM that is installed on a computer equals the
address space that is supported by the chipset, the total system memory
 that
is available to the operating system is always less than the physical RAM
that is installed. For example, consider a computer that has an Intel 975X
chipset that supports 8 GB of address space. If you install 8 GB of RAM,
 the
system memory that is available to the operating system will be reduced by
the PCI configuration requirements. In this scenario, PCI configuration
requirements reduce the memory that is available to the operating system
 by
an amount that is between approximately 200 MB and approximately 1 GB. The
 reduction depends on the configuration.

So doesn't that imply that based on the fact that I only have 4GB, I'll
still be short some memory, unlike what some others said? Or to put it
another way, like Gary said, what will the devices map into since they
 can't
map to thin air (and apparently they still need to map).

And to put a further point on it, since the video card is a MMIO
(memory-mapped I/O) device, I assume it'll take memory away from the max
 4GB
too. So the moral of the story is that sure I can upgrade to 64-bit Win7,
but if I don't put more than 4GB of memory in the system, I should end up
with exactly the same amount of memory as with 32-bit Win7 right?!

Now, apps running faster is a whole 'nother reason and definitely worth
 doing it for that! ;)

It maps into the address space of whatever the 64-bit address space is
 (8
terabytes or something like that). When you have a 32-bit OS, the
 address
space is only 4GB, the system maps in the hardware memory (BIOS,
 graphics
card RAM, etc.) space from the top of the address space down. That is
 why
you get between about 3-3.5GB of actual RAM when you have 4GB RAM on a
32-bit system. I know I'm not explaining this well, so take a look here:

[H] System Requirements

2010-02-12 Thread Jason Carson
Hello everyone,

When a game lists its systems requirements, for example, for Mass Effect
2, they are...

PC RECOMMENDED System Requirements

* Windows XP SP3 / Windows Vista SP1 / Windows 7
* 2.6+ GHz Cure 2 Duo Intel or equivalent AMD CPU
* 2 GB RAM
* ATI Radeon HD 2900 XT, NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT, or better recommended
* 100% DirectX compatible sound card and drivers
* DirectX August 2008

Running this game at 1024x768 would require a less powerful system than
running at 1920x1200. Do system requirements always refer to a standard
resolution?

Well, there were some firmware problems for the Seagate 1.5 TB drive

I upgraded to a gigabit switch about a year ago and have been happy with
the performance. You will definitely notice a difference in terms of speed
when transferring files to your NAS.

I have 2 PC's and 2 one Terabyte NAS boxen, all using wired connections to
my router's switch, which only has 10/100 ports. All are currently
connected at 100 mbits per second.

All 4 devices are 10/100/1000 capable, so would connecting them to a
standalone gig switch and then connecting the gig switch to the router be
 worth doing?

ie, would I see any noticeable speedup when the PC's and NAS's talk
together in transferring files, watching movies, or doing backups and such
 to and from the NAS's.?

I realize the connection to the router and the internet would still only
 be 100 megs. :)

Full Stroke Seek3 10.2 ms (average)
 Average Latency 2.99 ms (nominal)
 Rotational Speed 10,000 RPM

Full Stroke Seek3 8.5 ms (average)
 Average Latency 5.5 ms (nominal)

OK the new one is faster, but a lot faster? the latency number shows

still clicking over time connected, has an IP addy and such. But, no
client can surf the web via the router until I do (often multiple times)
 the
 disconnect/reconnect dance.

I do live in an older sub-division so I accept that the phone lines could
 be very old.
What I do not know is how to discuss this with the provider.
Never had this observation in SoCal that first time; but then, it never
 rains in SoCal,

Re: [H] MMORPGs

2007-12-12 Thread Jason Carson
I played WoW for 2 years and am currently playing Lord of the Rings
Online. I like both of them cause they are PVE which I enjoy. I am really
looking forward to Warhammer. It has PVP and PVE all mixed together. Its
release date is Q2 2008.

Lord of the Rings Online is fun if you enjoy PVE. The game has something
called monster play which is its answer to PVP but I don't really enjoy it
all that much. The graphics are fantastic though, much better than WoW and
it has support for DX10.

 Hello,

So I've been doing WoW (because of this list mind you) for 3 years. It
was better (and worse - mostly better) then EQ. My guild is nearly
thru the end game content. I'm not excited about WotLK expansion. I'm
pretty disgusted with the lack of work done by the artists in this
game. I think overall, my WoW days are drawing to an end. However,
once again, the list did well by me in getting me into this game.

So, now my question are these.
What are you playing now and what do you plan to play?

 Thanks.

What is the fastest Nivida AGP... a GeForce 7900GS?

7950GT is the fastest AGP I believe. It is made by XFX, but buyer beware
because many of these cards are defective. I had to RMA my card 2 times
before I got one that worked properly. My first card had artifacts and my
second card the DVI (Both, it is Dual DVI) stopped working. Third times
the charm... for me anyways.

[H] Network Speed

Greetings,

I have a 10/100/1000 network with cat5e cable and a 10/100/1000 switch yet
I am only getting 10/100 speed. Does anybody know why or how I can fix
this so it runs at full 10/100/1000 speed.

You only get a 10/100 link light or you only get a max of ~ 10MB/s
 transfers ?

The 1000 link light on my switch is lit up but I only get around 10-12
MB/s transfer speed.

I get 20-30MB/s over my 1000Mbit switch, it all depends on the protocol,
 the quality
of the switch/nics and the cables. That being said you should at least
 see 2-3x the speed
up 10/100 even on cheap gear since that's what I have. Also could be your
 TCP/IP params are not
tuned for low latency and high throughput.

ok, I rebooted my system and now I am getting ~45 MB/s so all is good.

Re: [H] A note to Microsoft...

2007-10-05 Thread Jason Carson
I use Vista for 1 whole day then ditched it and went back to XP.

The more and more I use Vista - the more and more it reminds me of
Windows ME. It's sad because I was able to keep putting 98 on people's
systems. I didn't sweat it because they paid for ME and I would just
wipe it then put 98 on. Figure if they did take me to court, I'd have a
decent chance of surviving. Now with XP activation and it not being
sold... All I can say is, I am glad I got into Apple when I did. Now,
when the customer wants XP because they fear Vista and I tell them I
can't, we have the Apple talk. It's not hard to sell them...

For every PC I sell, I sell like 10 Apples. Roughly.

Thanks for making it so easy. Thanks to all the Microsoft fucktards.

[H] Is my PSU good enough?

2007-09-23 Thread Jason Carson
Greetings,

I have a XFX 7950gt 512M AGP and Nvidia recommends a 400W power supply
with 12v=20amp.

I have a Thermaltake 550W dual rail (12v1=14, 12v2=15). Will it be good
enough to run my video card?

Could someone explain how this works?

My two 12v rails are

12v1=14amps
12v2=15amps

The card wants 20 amps and these two are below that.

Do I add them together to get 29 amps which is more than enough?

[H] Power Supply

2007-05-07 Thread Jason Carson
Greetings,

My brother just upgraded his computer to a core2 duo but the power supply
connector isn't large enough. It leaves 4 spots unplugged.

I am not talking about the plug that has 4 connectors on a different spot

Is this normal or does he need a new powersupply with a bigger power
connector?

Reading through the manual it says it needs a 24 pin EATXPWR, didn't
know there was such a thing. His current power supply is 20 pin... guess
that answers my question.

PCI-X http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PCI-X
PCI-e http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PCI_Express

Apparently PCI-X has been replaced by PCI-express

Well, maybe I have my lingo wrong. The card I have is an LSI MegaRAID
that has a 64bit 66mHz bus. When I bought it I was told that all
standard PCI slots are 33mHz and so to take full advantage I would
needa PCI-X slot that was only found in server mobos.

PCIe is for video cards only, right? Isn't that a different beast than
 PCI-X?

There was a thread on here about a month ago ro so that said F-Secure was
the best, here is the link...

http://www.scotsnewsletter.com/83.htm#avv

The September issue of Consumer Reports has a cover article on the best
software to protect against Viruses, Spam and Spyware.

They rate 12 antivirus programs and the top three are:
 1. BitDefender
 2. ZoneAlarm
 3. Kaspersky Labs

I have no idea how reliable their testing is,
BUT the point of this message is that it is important
to be aware of what information
customers who read Consumer Reports will have.
