Re: [H] new system build suggestions or upgrade
I have a similar system as Bobby accept I have a Rampage II Extreme mobo and a Nvidia 295 vid card. So far this system has run every game I've thrown at it at high framerates using a monitor running at a 1920x1200 resolution. I've been very happy with this system. I don't really know what to recommend because it's hard to make a recommendation on what you should buy without knowing the maximum amount of money you are willing to spend. Let us know this and we can be more helpful. I have been really happy with my Intel Core I7-920 on an Asus P6T mb. I have an Nvidia GTX 285 video card that is pretty nice. Although the latest 4xx series probably blows it away at the same price. I am running Win 7 Ultimate 64 with 6GB RAM. I am planning on upping the RAM to 12GB soon. Re: [H] 1000 Mbps vs 100 Mpbs????
I'm using a linksys wrt54g with a wsb24 booster. My mothers claim to do 1000 Mbps yet on file transfers I only get like 11 MB/s which is more like 100Mpbs/8 = 12.5 MB/s. If my wired network is running at 1000 Mbps shouldn't I bet getting around 125 MB/s file transfers over the wired network? What gives? I have a 1000 Mbps wired network but only get about 45 MB/s.
[H] 5.1 sound problem
Hello all, I am having a problem with sound. Here is my setup. I have a Soundblaster X-Fi Titanium Fatal1ty sound card and am running Win 7 Ultimate 64 bit. My headset, when plugged into the optical out works perfectly. Here is my problem. I bought a 5.1 speaker system and in my sound configuration it is setup as 5.1. However, when I test the sound it is only coming out of my front right/left speakers. The subwoofer, the rear left/right or the center speaker there is no sound. I am using the Creative software tool to test this. Anyone know what could be wrong and how I fix it? I was playing some games (Dirt 2 and Batman) and some of the voices of the characters are not coming though. However, if I play music on Winamp or Windows media player sound comes out of all speakers and the subwoofer. Thanks
Re: [H] 5.1 sound problem
Here are 4 things I should add... 1)My headset, the Tritton AX Pro (which is a 5.1), works fine when I test the rear/center/subwoofer. 2)If I set my speakers in the control panel to 2.1, then sound comes out of my rear speakers. 3)I have checked all the connections and everything seems setup correctly. 4)Games like Dirt 2 during the introduction have talking but I can't hear it though my speakers, although it sounds fine on my headset. I received your email. I'll try disabling DKIM this weekend when I have time and see if that is the problem. It looks like your mailserver is inserting a DKIM signature, and the listserv software is not stripping it and/or re-signing it as it should be if any of your evaluated headers have been modified. When you're getting the message back that is purportedly from you, that evaluation could be failing and your mailserver may be dropping the message. I'd try disabling DKIM and see what happens. I have 6 GB of RAM and a GeForce 295 with 1.7 GB of memory but am running WinXP 32 bit and my system only shows that I have 2.49 GB of RAM. Well, it does sort of sound like that. I have Win 7 ultimate with 6GB RAM. When I right-click on My Computer and select properties, it says I have 6.0GB. On my work machine (4GB RAM) with XP and 2 graphic cards, it says I have about 2.89GB RAM. But from the MS article: Note When the physical RAM that is installed on a computer equals the address space that is supported by the chipset, the total system memory that is available to the operating system is always less than the physical RAM that is installed. For example, consider a computer that has an Intel 975X chipset that supports 8 GB of address space. If you install 8 GB of RAM, the system memory that is available to the operating system will be reduced by the PCI configuration requirements. In this scenario, PCI configuration requirements reduce the memory that is available to the operating system by an amount that is between approximately 200 MB and approximately 1 GB. The reduction depends on the configuration. So doesn't that imply that based on the fact that I only have 4GB, I'll still be short some memory, unlike what some others said? Or to put it another way, like Gary said, what will the devices map into since they can't map to thin air (and apparently they still need to map). And to put a further point on it, since the video card is a MMIO (memory-mapped I/O) device, I assume it'll take memory away from the max 4GB too. So the moral of the story is that sure I can upgrade to 64-bit Win7, but if I don't put more than 4GB of memory in the system, I should end up with exactly the same amount of memory as with 32-bit Win7 right?! Now, apps running faster is a whole 'nother reason and definitely worth doing it for that! ;) BINO From: bh...@sc.rr.com To: hardware@hardwaregroup.com Date: Thu, 29 Apr 2010 22:32:12 -0400 Subject: Re: [H] Win7 Ent 32-bit vs 64-bit? When you have a 32-bit OS, the address space is only 4GB, the system maps in the hardware memory (BIOS, graphics card RAM, etc.) space from the top of the address space down. That is why you get between about 3-3.5GB of actual RAM when you have 4GB RAM on a 32-bit system. Re: [H] Is a gigabit switch worth it?
I upgraded to a gigabit switch about a year ago and have been happy with the performance. You will definitely notice a difference in terms of speed when transferring files to your NAS. I have 2 PC's and 2 one Terabyte NAS boxen, all using wired connections to my router's switch, which only has 10/100 ports. All are currently connected at 100 mbits per second. All 4 devices are 10/100/1000 capable, so would connecting them to a standalone gig switch and then connecting the gig switch to the router be worth doing? ie, would I see any noticeable speedup when the PC's and NAS's talk together in transferring files, watching movies, or doing backups and such to and from the NAS's.? I realize the connection to the router and the internet would still only be 100 megs. :) -- JRS [EMAIL PROTECTED] Please remove **X** to reply... But, no client can surf the web via the router until I do (often multiple times) the disconnect/reconnect dance. I do live in an older sub-division so I accept that the phone lines could be very old. [H] Is my PSU good enough?
Greetings, I have a XFX 7950gt 512M AGP and Nvidia recommends a 400W power supply with 12v=20amp. I have a Thermaltake 550W dual rail (12v1=14, 12v2=15). Will it be good enough to run my video card? Could someone explain how this works? My two 12v rails are 12v1=14amps 12v2=15amps The card wants 20 amps and these two are below that. Do I add them together to get 29 amps which is more than enough? Regards, Jason
[H] Headphones with a microphone
Greetings, My brothers birthday is coming up and I want to buy him a good set of headphones that have a microphone attached. Any suggestions?
Re: [H] Full Tower Beige Case
Greetings, Anyone know where I can buy a full tower beige case. Everywhere I search they have black/silver/blue/red etc... Thanks Jason Carson I would prefer the AOpen HQ08 (Gray)... ( http://global.aopen.com/products_detail.aspx?ctgr=auno=722mdstl=# ) ... but I think it is no longer on the market.
Re: [H] Full Tower Beige Case
Ugh. Why? Just personal preference, I don't like colored cases with fancy designs. Jason Carson wrote: Greetings, Anyone know where I can buy a full tower beige case. Everywhere I search they have black/silver/blue/red etc... Thanks Jason Carson
[H] Power Supply
Greetings, My brother just upgraded his computer to a core2 duo but the power supply connector isn't large enough. It leaves 4 spots unplugged. I am not talking about the plug that has 4 connectors on a different spot on the motherboard. Is this normal or does he need a new powersupply with a bigger power connector? Jason Carson
Re: [H] Power Supply
Reading through the manual it says it needs a 24 pin EATXPWR, didn't know there was such a thing. His current power supply is 20 pin... guess that answers my question. The addy is: http://download.mozilla.org/?product=firefox-2.0os=winlang=en-US I just modified the download URL for 1.5x to 2.0 and it worked! I think the official release date is tomorrow. Bobby
[H] BTX Form Factor
I came across this article http://www.anandtech.com/showdoc.html?i=1876 discussing BTX form factor, whats going on with that, the article is 3 years old and says that BTX is the future, but every mobo I know of is ATX. Jay
Re: [H] Core 2 and PCI-X
PCI-X http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PCI-X PCI-e http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PCI_Express Apparently PCI-X has been replaced by PCI-express Well, maybe I have my lingo wrong. The card I have is an LSI MegaRAID that has a 64bit 66mHz bus. When I bought it I was told that all standard PCI slots are 33mHz and so to take full advantage I would needa PCI-X slot that was only found in server mobos. PCIe is for video cards only, right? Isn't that a different beast than PCI-X? On 8/13/06, Greg Sevart [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: It has been my experience that organizations overwhelmingly tend to upgrade entire servers, not individual processors. New server, new PCIe RAID card. Re: [H] AntiVirus - Consumer Reports
There was a thread on here about a month ago ro so that said F-Secure was the best, here is the link... http://www.scotsnewsletter.com/83.htm#avv The September issue of Consumer Reports has a cover article on the best software to protect against Viruses, Spam and Spyware. They rate 12 antivirus programs and the top three are: 1. BitDefender 2. ZoneAlarm 3. Kaspersky Labs I have no idea how reliable their testing is, BUT the point of this message is that it is important to be aware of what information customers who read Consumer Reports will have. The problem is that for power users, so many of the common tasks are made cumbersome to impossible that it defeats a big part of the purpose of upgrading. Thanks for this great review. I think I'll stick with W2K and avoid the authorization hassles of XP, and the obfuscation of Vista. Yeah, agreed, I think I will stick with win2k for now. I might upgrade to Vista when SP1 comes out and alot of the bugs are fixed. Here is a list of the various versions of Vista and some information about them... http://winsupersite.com/showcase/winvista_editions.asp One of the other problems vista will face is market confusion. There will be EIGHTEEN different versions of Vista Basically seven commonly available versions, double that so you have 32bit / 64 bit versions. Add in tablet edition, as well as other upgrade versions... Vista makes me think of matrix reloaded. Unlike XP which really changed the way for USB connectivity, brought NTFS home, as well as significant improvements in networking and drive management.. Vista just doesn't seem to bring a single functionality change to Windows that makes you say this is a must have. I keep getting email from MS that intones that hey, it's not functionally complete. Ok, fine. But unless the functionality is a total scrap of the UI as well as a change in the file structure, mapping and networking functionality which right now seem like a throwback in usability, I don't know how adding more things helps this frankenstein. -- Tallyho ! ]:8) Taglines below ! -- Man: There is nothing more miserable and more arrogant.

Hey, I'm looking again to get a lower end 6200/6600 Nvidia graphics card. Who are the recommended manufacturers and who should I avoid? Thanks, Bobby I have a gigabyte 6600 GT and it works fine, it also comes with OC software but I don't use that.
