[H] Free tools to remove viruses...

2009-07-17 Thread Bobby Heid
Hey,

In about an hour or so, I have to go to a friend's house to remove what I
think is Conficker. What are some of the online tools that can remove that
and other things if that is not what it is? She cannot get to the internet,
so I have to carry whatever I'll use.

Thanks,

Bobby

Look for the stinger stuff from mcafee and if you look for a conficker remover
you may find a remover for it.

ClamAV, Avira and a couple others can run off a USB stick that you update prior
to taking it with you. SpyBot can also be run from USB stick. Check portable
apps site. I usually try to take as many varied tools just in case.

I just talked to her. It appears that she cannot even get to the internet
for any site or with ping. Could this be one of those things where you have
to reset the IP stack (or something like that)? If so, how do I do that?
Anyone have any links?

Thanks,
Bobby

combofix always works for me when everything else fails, even extreme cases.
always run everything else usually first, spybot etc.

I'll keep that in mind for next time.

I get over to their house. I first run Stinger, it finds about 7 trojans
and a worm. I then run the MS Malicious Software tool. It found 13 things
- trojans, downloaders, and worms. At this point (4 hours later), I
suggested a nuke and pave. They agreed.

Thanks for all of your suggestions.

Yeah, if it had been my system, I'd have spent more time on it. Their
system was painfully slow and I knew it'd take forever to clean up.

LOL. These are the type people who want to know nothing of what you do,
just fix it. The wife says it was the husband's brother that caused all of
this after he played on the pc all afternoon.

I really have tried teaching them safe surfing, Honest!

Just nuke it from orbit. It's the only way to be sure.
