I got that point, it's a given that all devices with memory are going to restrict
how much of 4GB can be mapped available as RAM. SO if you have 4GB total, 3.5GB
usable; 3GB total, 3GB usable since there's 1GB of mapping left over for video ram.

Yes, it supports a 4GB map, but that wasn't my issue. I wrote that all
devices with memory, including your video card(s) are deducted from the

I disagree, there is lots of articles about this including in MS
Knowledge base. I have actually experienced the drop after installing
a video card. In Control Panel\System\General Tab I started out with
so much ram and then installed a video card with twice as much RAM
and when I checked again my system ram had dropped an appropriate amount.

If you are running 32 bit OS, then a one GB card will take another
512megs of addressable memory.
this means if you are currently showing 3GB of RAM with a 512meg
video card, and you install a 1GB video card then you will reduce
your system memory by 512megs.

Got a link to the KB article? Makes me wonder if that's related to not having PAE
since XP32 is most definitely supports a 4GB map:

http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa366778.aspx
http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/system/platform/server/PAE/PAEdrv.mspx

My current system is PAE enabled, 2GB RAM w/ a 512MB video card (512MB*2 actually)
and I'm not showing an RAM loss. Why would I @3GB given the 4GB limit?

In a 32 bit system there is only so many memory addresses = 4GB
worth. Then you start subtracting any other onboard memory from
whatever source because they are using memory addresses. A 1GB card
uses 1GB of memory addresses. The ability to use up to I think 2TB of
RAM is the primary advantage to 64 bit

Re: [H] Not yet

Rick,
I went and read the link. It is EVGA. In the last 2 yrs I have had spotty
service from EVGA video cards. I have RMA'd 3/5, and just tossed
2/5. But, to EVGA's credit, their RMA process is somewhat solid, even
though I do not care for their 14-day RMA window! Still their RMA process
does work OK. I can not speak to whether whatever I got back was a 'refurb'
or 'new.' So far, all my EVGA RMA's are still clicking along doing
video. When these cards fail; they get tossed, and, I go shopping for
somebody else!

I just don't think their product is really strong. But, I will think about it.
It is terribly difficult now trying to pick video cards just because there
seem to be so many interfaces I just do not understand yet (my problem
ATM), and, the death of old PCI and old AGP.
I will get over this as I move forward. I know this. Just painful in the
interim ATM.
