Workgroups, WINS NBoTCPIP are a pita. The IP works, so if you setup a DNS server
you could connect using machine names without problems.

Off the top of my head @ 4AM so YMMV!

Lately, the last couple of boots, it refuses to see that machine.
It's only important that the Win7 machine sees the WinXP machine,
visa versa doesn't matter.

I'm still running the Win7 RC build 1700, I think (it's on my home
machine). It seems that if I reboot I may or may not have internet
connection. Sometimes I'll have to reboot 3 times to get the internet
connection to appear. Once it does, I'm good to go...but... And once I
do have network access I can always see my laptop downstairs, which
runs XP, but I can't see my other PC running XP which sits next to my
Win7 PC. Argh! I'm probably not doing sharing correctly somehow on the
second PC.

Also, I still have problems using files on a portable HD between XP and
Vista and Win7 computers. The old read only BS.

Re: [H] Windows 7 Networking

2009-09-30 Thread Steve Tomporowski
There is only the 'homegroup' on the Win7 box. According to the help,
which I haven't tried to dispute yetonly a Win7 machine can join the
homegroup. The WinXP machine shows up every once in a while, but I
think the main idea is to use the IP address and that should do it.

I probably made a mistake on the install when I told it that I was in a
home environment. I probably would have gotten options for different
workgroups if I had chosen 'business'. Still might be able to change it...
