If you are running diagnostics on a known bad motherboard, then I'd expect
to see all sorts of strange results. Do you have another MB to try it on?

I can do that but for what mb's cost not sure it is worth
it, plus the mb is vintage 2001.

I forget who suggested this IBM drive diag here but I am so glad they
did, it's pretty sharp. You'd think the WD diag would be able to Dx it's
very own drive. If it passes the IBM diag I'm pretty much ok with it.

still freaks me that wd's sw says it is not a wd drive even though the

I've always found IBM's drive test utility to be the best. Standard item in
my software toolkit :)
The only other one would be WD's WinDLG, since IBM's util doesn't like
USB2.0 drives and

refuses to perform zero-fills on non-IBM drives.

When I run the xp repair console and fixmbr it will boot and
run but back to not booting again on reboot.
scanned for virus, none found
scanned for spyware, some found, nothing serious.
did find a leaking cap on the MB.
at this point I do not know if it is the drive or the mb ( Tim )
I happen to have a exact model in stock and will attempt booting to
it.
wd diagnostics still say not a wd drive. WD says this is usually a jumper
problem, tried all there with no luck. I wonder if a reformat may fix
this ?
