I was not the one that suggested making Vista look like XP. I personally
like the Aero interface also. :).

I am not one of those that is telling everyone to go out and buy Vista to
replace XP (not saying that you are either). I agree with what Tim (I think
it was Tim) said in that people that are getting new machines should get
Vista and not XP. I just think that Vista is superior to XP on many fronts.
Sure, I think that based upon 3rd party drivers not being ready that MS
probably should have held off a bit longer. I hate the slow file transfers
(which as someone pointed out, should be corrected in SP1).

I am not out to try and change any one's mind on this list, we are all big
people that can make up our own minds. I just see so many people bashing
Vista that I wanted to let others know that there are many of us out here
that like Vista. It's kind of like going to the forums to look up an issue
with some hardware/software, you will mostly find negative stuff. That is
because the people that are not having issues are not posting or reading the
forums, only those with issues.

I've beta tested many a MSFT app & know that it's more than a GUI
change but what I was referring to was the 2nd line you typed. If I
change Vista to look & act like XP then what's the use in buying
Vista? Sure it helps those that are inclined to shoot themselves but
many of us are behind a router & use common sense that ain't so common. ;-)

Ding ding. Despite the fact that the UI did change rather dramatically,
Vista is, above all, an architectural release. Working in a software
company, I have a great appreciation for just how difficult those are to do.

I had Vista's public beta or trial version for several months & while
one can even take it back to Windows Classic I still don't like it.
Why should some one pay money for an OS when it's little more than a
GUI change as compared to XP ? It certainly not any faster. As for
the improvement in the file manager they're no biggie as I've been
using Total Commander as opposed to Windows Exploder for years. I
certainly wouldn't upgrade XP to Vista & recently even when I had the
chance to get Vista Business instead of XP Pro I said no thanks.

Sorry but no sale here.

Learning Vista? What the heck? If you don't like the or have problems With
Windows Aero, you can set it to Windows XP look. I for one think it is much
simpler to use. But then I am used to Linux, Mac and XP before hand and have
a decent understanding how OS's work.

I suggest you take a look on a computer demo at Best Buy or Fry's
Electronics. Move around on the desktop and see how effortlessly it is to
move around. The only thing I do not like it wants you to confirm to run
application in Admin mode, which can be a good thing.

I don't want to spend the time the new OS learning curve would
require only to have something prettier only to have an OS that costs
more, doesn't work any faster than the one I'm presently using. If
you'll examine MSFT's history every other OS has been troublesome.

I agree with Joe User. If you have to learn everything over you may
as well get an Apple. Remember the average end luser doesn't care
about hardware like we do as they just want the darned thing to run.
Vista has files & folders relocated via name space & extra links that
it makes it almost impossible to find the real files just like a Mac.

A Vista or Mac system for me, NO THANKS.

I use Vista Ultimate on my laptop and Gaming computer. I have only minor
problems, but Vista has worked very well.

Vista only has an issue with SLI. nVidia has been lagging on this problem.
Although, I have recently replaced my 2 nVidia 7900 GTX's with 1 8800 GTX
and I get more fps in World of Warcraft and other games.

The Peripheral manufacturers need to work on their drivers for Vista. This
is the only problem. If you don't use a Soundblaster sound card or
nvidia/ATI video cards you may have problems with Vista. Also, Vista 32-bit
is the only one I would recommend for gaming atm. If you do get Vista for
gaming get Premium version or higher.

Salutaions.

I ran RC1 for several months in a VM before upgrading my system from XP pro
to Vista business.

Vista is as stable as XP pro was for me. Many things, though not all, seem
snappier on my system (p4 3.0 GHz - 2GB RAM). All of the peripherals that I
have work fine with Vista after having downloaded updated drivers if there
were any.

I am a software developer. I like that .Net 3.0 is already in Vista. Vista
also brings a lot of stuff to the development table via native APIs and the
like.

I like the direction that the security model is heading. It is not where it
needs to be yet, but it is a step in the right direction.

Granted, there are issues. Many times when I delete a large video file, if
I don't close the explorer window right after deleting it, the file will not
disappear until I reboot. I hope SP1 fixes this. I also realize that
others have problems running Vista. But I think that many times, the issues
are with the 3rd parties. Drivers/hardware/software has not been updated to
work with Vista. I realize it may be painful and costly for these 3rd party
vendors to upgrade.

After spending a lot of time trying to build a new box, I noted that a lot of
system houses still offer a choice between XP and Vista, with XP being the
cheaper but faster option. Unless Vista gets faster, I don't see XP going away
soon.

Acer still offers XP Pro laptops, and we sell a lot of them.

I used a custom stripped down version of XP on my non 64-bit boxes. I believe
the OS install only takes up about 2 GB's when configured this way. There are
many good tutorials and utilities that help you make a custom XP install
(unattended if you like), with all SP's and patches integrated. It's already
got DX9c too.

It's a LOT faster than bloated standard XP install and runs good on slower
boxes too.
