Defrag may only have a benchmark measurable effect vs. real world. Still it's gotta
shave cumulative seconds off access to many small files or large highly fragmented
ones by simple fact that head seeking takes (negligible these days, admitted) time.

I don't run one to the determent of my system performance when I'm actively using it
but I do have it do some optimization a few times a week when the system is idle.
Theoretically it it could have a detrimental effect on the life of the drive with no
benefit to access times if files accessed most frequently fragment faster than you
can defrag them. With SSD Flash I hear it's bad in general even if it does help
access times given the finite life of those media.

Actually the PC being too busy when it's idle is the reason I disabled all of Vista
search indexing despite finding the cached searches beneficial. Got real tiring quick
wondering why my HDD's seemed so noisy when I was doing nothing with the system.
Suppose like defrag there is a way to limit how often it runs but could not find it
quick enough vs. disabling.

MyDefrag still takes the cake IMHO for lightweight and configurable defrag.

The larger companies have more budget for development and hence you can
expect better algorithims for defragging.

That may not always be the case but is pretty much the norm.

That's what I was thinking. I've never been able to show an
improvement in speed with a defragger in years. I did some tests
about five years ago and after repeatedly failing to get any better
than a 5% improvement, I stopped bothering.

I defrag with windows native once - maybe twice a year.

Before doing an OS install, I used to put a couple of gigs of stuff on a
drive. Then after the install, and letting the OS work for a short while,
I'd remove the filler stuff, and defrag would have all that space to
move the files into. Back in the 98se days, when the OS would keep track
of which files were used most. Don't know how effective it was, but it
seemed to do well.

I do system maintenance over night from a batch file which includes
command line defrag and wipe. But if you want a traditional defrag
program Auslogics has a really nice one for free.

The larger companies have more budget for development and hence you can

That may not always be the case but is pretty much the norm.

Yes we do. Increases speed on boot devices. Although, I strongly not
recommend using Defrag on a SSD drive. You only have a number of write's to
the memory cells before it does not work anymore.

I use and recommend Diskeeper, because it is well integrated into Windows
XP, Vista, 7, 2003 and 2009.

I tried the OO and it worked well on an XP test computer. If the cost of
OO was significantly less Diskeeper's Base I would recommend it to clients.

2010-01-03 Thread Brian Weeden
But you shouldn't have to deal with that - you install XBMC Live, which
boots linux and into XBMC directly. Then you can just use the remote.

The only issue with Linux is if something goes wrong.

I think Linux would work better. Lifehacker has an article about that.

With vdapau you can get full accelleration via the nvidia chipset.

I've got the revo sitting here but haven't set it up yet. I plan on
using XBMC which will be a learning experience for me. Then I'll try to
get it to run with a hauppauge remote. It's much more fun to cobble

Maybe I'm a little slow on the uptake, but I've got a key now, how the
heck do I download it?

Have you been to that link? It only has version 12, not 10

2010-01-01 Thread Jeff Lane
Steve,

It's the same on their site in their download section, unless you found
something else. I downloaded the 64-bit version and haven't installed it in
Win 7 yet as I have a dual boot and have a lot to do in XP right now,
including email. You might try to install ver. 12 with what they sent. Let
us know if it works. Thanks.

Jeff

That link works here. (Thanks.)
I had previously found it by looking in their archive section.

I'm pretty sure it is a bad idea to install the ver 12 and try
the old ver 10 key...

You could try. But I think the key would not work.
