Re: [H] PC monitor/TV?

2008-09-21 Thread Bobby Heid
Hey,

Just wanted to let you all know what I ended up doing. I spent way too much
time looking for a cable solution for the Game Cube. It was either way to
expensive (for what I needed it for), or it was something custom. I looked
at monitors that could support TV input, but that was way more than I wanted
to spend on her system.

I ended up getting a 19" HDTV that had VGA inputs. While this cost more
than getting just a monitor, it was not too bad.

Thanks for all of your inputs,

Bobby

I saw later I did not answer your question, but perhaps gave
you a better option, IF you would like to save some physical
space on "the desk". (Ditch the TV and the CRT...)
(OTOH, I have a 5-6" color TV velcroed on top of my CRT as I speak..)

In another room...
I call mine (LCD) a TV since it has a modern (digital) tuner (+analog).
Anything "with-out" a tuner I call a Monitor.
Trying to be clearer, mine is (or at least does) BOTH.
I select all inputs on the LCD screen with a remote control..
(There are 8 or 9 listed, including "TV".)
Mine has all sorts of inputs, all you list except maybe DVI-I
(I don't use that one but have one that sounds similar.)

I can't use the component (Video+L+R) and S-Video inputs at the same time.
One OR the other, on each "pair" of those inputs.
Be careful of limitations of any "shared" input types...

So basically, as long as the monitor has multiple inputs, I should be able
to select the input on the monitor? Is this a valid statement?

Her pc has a NVidia 6200 gc in it. It can output S-Video, VGA and DVI-I
ports on it. It can do 1600 x 1200 max resolution.

The GameCube can output in RGB or S-Video.

Thanks,
Bobby

Look for an ATSC TV with a VGA input.
This would be the easiest to use with an "older"
computer with limited numbers of outputs.

Just be sure the computer video memory can handle the
default VGA resolution the LCD will "require"...

play her GameCube. I'd like to get her an LCD monitor (probably 17"-19")
that either 1) has inputs so she could use it for her PC or her GameCube,

or

2) some sort of switching mechanism (I guess like a KVM switch) where she
could switch sources for the monitor.

Yes the Dells and the Gateway's do this.

I don't know what monitor you are looking at but just make sure it
doesn't exceed the

capabilities of the video card.

The GameCube can output in RGB or S-Video.

you will just run that through S-Video and the sound through the IN
jacks of your sound card.

Bobby

Get a Dell or Gateway LCD. They have multiple inputs, for VGA, DVI,
S-Video, VCR video and newer ones have HDMI. You just plug your video
card into a DVI or VGA port and then plug Game cube into one of the
others. Then just use the selector switch on the LCD Monitor to pick
the source.

Just make sure the video card in the PC will handle the LCD you
pick at the default resolution.

Good Luck
