powered off by itself. This is a Q6600 machine that I built a few years
ago and has been in nearly constant use since then with little to no
trouble. It's been rock-sold and aside from upgrading the video card a
year ago I haven't had to touch it.

I waited a few seconds, then hit the power button. It came back on briefly
and then shut off again, followed by the smell of overheated electronics.

Disconnected the power and opened it up. Nothing was visibly smoking.
Took everything apart. Inspected the CPU and it appeared ok. Replaced
the thermal compound and re-seated the heatsink. Smell appeared to be
coming from the power supply but I can't be positive.

Put the bare essentials backtogether (CPU, RAM, video card) and powered it
back on. Getting a variety of beep and error codes from the on-board
diagnostic unit. At first there was a 1 long, 3 short beep code for the
RAM . Reseated and it's gone. POST sequence was hanging on 8.7. (Check CPU
Voltage) and now it's hanging on 8.2. (Check Power Supply).

I get the sense that perhaps the power supply went bad. However, I really
can't afford to be down on this system very long, so if I'm going to order
parts I want to do it as soon as possible and not go through a long
 trouble-shooting process.

Thoughts from the collective? Is it likely that if the power supply is
indeed the culprit that the damage was contained there? Or should I be
worried about the CPU, RAM, mobo, etc?

cheapest way to go; and purchased from Wally World. Bottom of the line Nokia,
T-Mobile unlimited data and 100 minutes for $30/month; still have that good

Camped the whole way, Oct’14 - Jan ’15, only three nights in motels. Coldest
morning, 14° F.
Getting out of the warm bag that morning to make coffee and oatmeal was an
exercise in determination.
I did this trip for fun and adventure. Riding in the rain was too little fun
and too much adventure.
Hunkered down for rain.

But I digress…
Having been a computer ̶j̶u̶n̶k̶y̶ enthusiast since 1967, I’ve seen’em all
come and go, so I’m not a fanboi; never met a computer I didn’t like.

At long last curiosity got me and I wanted to see what the world of Android was
about. I’m impressed at the scale of that world. Spend many hours reading
websites, forums, whatever; one thing leading to another. So much to take in.

The Nexus I picked up on fleaBay has screen issues:
http://imageshack.com/a/img924/7136/CvsZCd.png
http://imageshack.com/a/img922/9270/MpvmKb.png

So I got a refund and ordered a Certified Refurbished unit through Amazon.
Seller said to keep the bad unit, so I’ll have one to hack the sh!t out of.

The only downside so far is the Netflix app won’t run on a rooted/unlocked
Android setup. Found and tried several builds of the Netflix app claimed to
work but no joy. Found this this morning:
https://android.gadgethacks.com/how-to/make-netflix-android-pay-work-your-rooted-device-with-magisk-0177578/
Since the Amazon unit will come with 4.XX, I may just try it before doing
anything else. Or I may upgrade it to 5.XX (last stock image) and try to get
the bad unit to run Netflix. Next week I’ll want to do something totally
different.

Anyway, I see many hours ahead, lost to the new (to me) world of Android.

I’ve been lucky. Before creators update, I was stuck in update hell. One update
would not install no matter what ‘fix’ I found online. Every two days it would
go through the cycle of trying to update, failing and having to undo the
update. I would have left windows forever but I couldn’t find a way to get
around secure boot on my tablet.

https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA4TX5RB6372_re=irulu-_-0EJ-007E-000V6-_-Product

Which I got on sale a few years ago and has been a great little machine.

Creators update finally fixed the problem. If/when I figure a way to boot Linux
on it, it’s goodbye windows.

download apps from the windows store. Other programs have no problem updating.

I had the same problem on another laptop. I solved that problem by
restoring a backup that was pre creators update. I decided to do the
same thing with the Edge. I did a restore with Acronis and it won't
boot. I couldn't figure out why and, eventually I figured something
must be corrupt in the boot sector so I did a wipe of the entire
drive with Kill disk and, then a Acronis restore but same problem.
Diagnostics report that the drive is locked which is why I can't fix it.

How can I fix this? I need to get this laptop up and, running and I
am prepared to buy another drive if need be. Thanks.

Nice. Some of us are typing challenged, so the desktop icon is easier. Whatever
works. 

From: Joshua MacCraw

Win 7 is simple as pasting "cmd.exe /c Cleanmgr /sageset:65535
/sagerun:65535" into search, ctrl-shift-enter to launch elevated.

I’ll say it again, nice! :-)

Joshua MacCraw
not everyone knows you can run as admin with that search/ctrl-shift-enter
trick was my example point.

[H] Drive Cleanup Accounting for space

2017-05-22 Thread Al E. Gator

Copy Command prompt to the desktop. Right click – properties. Use:

%SystemRoot%\System32\cmd.exe /c Cleanmgr /sageset:65535 /sagerun:65535

In Target box.

Will give every option on what to clean. To use run as administrator.

Can you add the RAM yourself later?
More memory is most always a good thing.
It comes down to how dear the $100 is…

I am planning a Synology DS916+ 4 bay purchase. This is for media
streaming/recording, security cameras, data backup on a Single User
LAN. I have a choice of 2GB RAM or 8GB of Ram at a difference of
$100. Do I need 8GB or RAM on a single user network...maybe for 4K in
the future?... Or not.

Re: [H] Android Tablet Recommendation

2017-08-27 Thread Al E. Gator
The Nexus 10 has screen issues after playing movies for a couple of hours. The
bottom of the screen would pixilate, freeze, turn odd colors. I got a refund
from the seller and was told to not bother returning it. It does much better
with a small fan running behind it; 12V case fan running on 5V, very quiet.

Bought a Certified Refurbished Nexus 10 off Amazon, same problem right out of
the box. Sent it back, got refund. So I have the original Nexus I bought to
play with for free. Been flashing all the latest ROMs. Netflix app will not run
on anything but stock ROMs; tried all the workarounds, but no joy. Looking at
other people’s tablets, the 2560 x 1600 resolution of the Nexus has me spoiled.
Waiting for: Teclast X98 Plus II Intel Cherry Trail X5 9.7 Inch IPS Dual Boot
Tablet (http://preview.tinyurl.com/ybrzuqal) to arrive. Looking to dump the
Windows side and run Linux; but there isn’t a Linux version with decent touch
capabilities…

How'd that tablet & keyboard work out? My 2ng gen Nexus 7's are all dying
eemc slow death and Pixel is still to damn expensive! ;)

[H] Running sysprep on dual boot tablet.

2017-09-02 Thread Al E. Gator

I bought this tablet.
http://preview.tinyurl.com/ybrzuqal

The screen is very dark, clear and sharp; but dark. It’s the one on the left,
next to a Nexus 10 streaming the same vid from Netflix.
http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/800x600q90/924/kuHQfB.jpg

I’m returning it, and I’d like to run sysprep in the win 10 partition. Was
wondering if it might mess up the dual boot function.

Thoughts? TIA

Try to get it listed with BookBub, https://www.bookbub.com/home/
There, now do I get a free copy?

J/K it’s not a genre I read.
Good luck. That genre is crowded.

I'd be willing to do something like that if I can get some help with
promotion.  That's the toughest part of self-publishing.  Besides, did
you see the price  of the kindle version?
