Re: [ha-Safran]: Women in the Bible [books, Web sites]
One book that comes to mind immediately is by Prof. Adele Reinhartz: Why Ask My Name: Anonymity Identity in Biblical Narrative. Oxford U.P., 1998. ISBN: 195099702. It is excellent and won the Canadian Jewish Book Awards prize for Biblical and Rabbinic Scholarship. Re: [ha-Safran]: Women in the Bible
ONAH Ok, I am going to go into a much longer explanation and I will probably get ragged on by a lot of people out there but here goes. Sex is a woman's RIGHT and a man's DUTY. This is pure Torah. The Talmud says that the sexual passion of the woman is far greater than that of a man. Additionally, the Torah actually obligates a man to pleasure his wife to the point of climax before the husband. Anything else is considered abuse. This is all under the mitzvah of onah, which I think, is translated as conjugal relations or sexual rights. It is a need and a pleasure for the woman moreso than for the man. In fact the marriage ketubah states three rights for the woman. They are: -Onah, sexual rights -clothing/shelter -food NIDDAH (means time of her time.) This has to do with a woman's cycle. There must be seven bloodless days then the woman goes to the mikveh and that night they may resume sleeping together and enjoying intimacy and sex. In fact, it is imperative that they do. For more information look up Iggeret Hakodesh. This is a letter written by a sage to his son on the occassion of his marriage. For futher info you might go to the Saltzstein (sic) Talmud and look under family purity or Niddah. The bottom line is that conjugal relations are determined by the woman and her pleasure is priority. To deny one's spouse conjugal relations means that the denying spouse is being rebellious. It really has nothing to do with the husband's occupation. However, just because he is away from his spouse does not give him leave to channel his drive in any other way, INCLUDING MASTURBATION OR VISITING PROSTITUTES. If the man's occupation takes him away from his wife's side then he must wait to return to his wife and make sure she is fulfilled and happy before he attends to his own satisfaction. This may seem sexist to many out there but I am not the one who wrote the rules and I wake up everyday and thank G-d that I am not a man! Get the book I mentioned earlier. It explains it much better than I do. Rivka, Thank you so much for this information. I will pass it along to my patron. As well, thank you to everyone else who has suggested books. However, I believe the patron is going to ask for more original sources, as they are using this for a paper. Thank you again to everyone who has helped. [ha-Safran]: A very personal account on the Holocaust
--- Message requiring your approval -- From: Michal Avrahamy [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: [ha-Safran]: A very personal account on the Holocaust As each year passes the number of Holocaust survivors becomes less, therefore each personal story is sacred, a testament to the degradation and horrors inflicted on the Jewish people by the Nazis. I commend Jehudith Ilan-Onderwijzer for her courage in opening again the wounds of her experiences to remind us of how the quiet, insidious voice of anti-Semitism can swiftly become a destructive roar. The chronology of events is so clearly written that one can almost imagine that the writer is speaking to the reader. The inclusion of photographs in the book, including one of the author, her son and four grandsons standing under A.S.Onderwijserhof, the street in Amsterdam named after her family, makes this a very personal account. [ha-Safran]: Which classification scheme best?
Dear Safranim, I was speaking to our local Orthodox rabbi. He is unhappy with the LC system in his synagogue's library. I told him that there were other schemes out there (i.e. Wiene and Elazar) but I'm unfamiliar with which one he might want to use. Any ideas? He is trying to organize the library himself, but is willing to ask for help, and I happened to be in the building (it's not the library I work in). Also, the biggest challenge of the library is the shelf list (main entry cards only), which is the only access point for looking up books. I think he wants a system immanently browseable. Since we (the other librarians in the city), would love to have them in a Union catalog online someday, we want the same thing!! Thanks as always for any assistance. I told him I would ask my colleagues (he doesn't realize how much info I can glean from you all!!). RE: [ha-Safran]: Which classification scheme best?
You may want to pass this on to him. I chose the Elazar System because it seems to be a combination of the Dewey Decimal System and the Kabbalah. The kids in our local school system are used to the Dewey Decimal System so that is why I chose to use that. also I am using MS Access to record the books in a database and put in the number so that I can keep track of them.
