[ha-Safran]: Rebuilding UTT Library in Montreal

2004-04-15 Thread Marsha Lustigman
Shalom Hasafran,

I have been reading the responses of many of you to the Erev Pessah
firebombing of the VSL United Talmud Torahs school library. As
co-President of the local chapter of the AJL, I have been trying to
coordinate efforts to help the librarian, Dan Holobow begin to rebuild.
The last thing he needs right now are donations of books. There is no
space nor qualified personnel to go through them. What the library needs
at the moment is money to help reshelve and restock a school library that
operates in English, French and Hebrew. Specific requests, especially for
Judaica, will come later and that is where all of you can help. Donations
may be made to United Talmud Torah Library Rebuilding Fund at 4840
St.Kevin, Montreal, QC H3W 1P2 (514-739-2291). Messages of support can be
sent to the [EMAIL PROTECTED]

[ha-Safran]: Montreal School Firebombing and Hebrew Poem

2004-04-15 Thread henie krishtalka
Dear Safranim, Safraniot,

I am the high school librarian at Herzliah in St Laurent Montreal. This is
the sister school to the elementary school United Talmud Torahs, and is in
the same building where the firebombing occurred.

I would like to apologise for being so slow in getting back to you all.

I would like to add to the email of Marsha Lustigman , Montreal Bialik
high school librarian, and co-president of the local AJL chapter, in
thanking you for your warmth, support, and offers of help. She is so right,
of course. We are not yet in a position to receive donations of books, and
we will be in contact as soon as we logistically can to give you information.

I include a poem written by Noam Reshef, one of our teachers. This was just
written; a reaction in Hebrew, from a teacher whose classroom is one room
away from the burnt out shell of the library. In English, what he is
saying is that the threads of ancient hatreds against learning and
civilisation are still here. It is a Jewish school with educational values
and not a business that they hit. His poem is in the language and contains
the ideas they tried to destroy.

Todah.

[ha-Safran]: Halakhah and the spaying of animals

2004-04-15 Thread Shmuel Ben-Gad
Shalom safranim.

I hope everyone had a good Pesach.

Someone has asked me about this question. Apparently there is a group in
Israel concerned about animal overpopulation and some orthodox rabbis have
come out against the spaying or neutering of animals. Pray, would anyone
know about this in particular and, more generally, about the Halakhic position,
if any, on the spaying animals?

Temple Israel is looking for a library school student, or recent library
school graduate who is interested in the field of Judaica librarianship, and
would like to gain hands-on experience in a synagogue library with regular

The focus of the Summer Internship is to work with library materials and to
assist patrons. The following are all possible projects for an intern, and
would be selected based on an intern's interest and time commitment. A time
commitment would range from a few hours a week, to possibly up to 20 hours a
week for approximately 10 weeks. Compensation and starting date will be
discussed with each candidate.

 DESCRIPTION OF POSSIBLE PROJECTS

rabbis' lectures, guest speakers' presentations, children's programs.

[ha-Safran]: Why No reaction?

2004-04-15 Thread Eli Wise
There has much discussion concerning the firebombing in Montreal. From all
indications it was a hate crime. It is very admirable that AJL is trying to
find ways to help the victims restore the library itself. Is this
organization missing the bigger picture? If in fact a library and place of
Jewish learning is the target of hate with possible linkage to the current
Middle East situation, shouldn't AJL make a statement about the incident.

There is an increased environment of Anti-Semitism and Anti-Israel sentiment
in recent times. Just today Bin-Laden issued a tape message that links 9/11
with United States support of Israel.
Even the message that was left at the bombing scene related to the Middle
East. Unfortunately, what happened in Montreal could happen in any one of
our libraries. Do we have to wait for that to happen. Silence is the
greatest tool of the hate peddler and terrorist. We are a national
organization of Jewish librarians and one of our own was attacked. We need
to make a statement of condemnation of this brutal act. The Rabbis tell us
that silence is equivalent to admission. When the nation was attacked on
9/11 there was fear, sadness, and resolve. We as an organization should does
at least that much.

Re: [ha-Safran]: Why No reaction?

2004-04-15 Thread Andrea Rapp
If the AJL wants to make a statement I think it's
fine, but let's not kid ourselves that it makes much
difference.
It would be nice if other organizations - library
associations, free-speech groups, Canadian religious
groups, etc., made statements! If they all are being
silent, I think that's a lot more worrisome.

Re: [ha-Safran]: Outreach

2004-04-15 Thread Andrea Rapp
Marcia Posner sent me this reply and asked that I
forward it to the list. It describes a more ambitious
project than I was envisioning, but here is her
response:
===
The first thing to do is to obtain a directory of
schools, both public and private in your area or for
as wide a community as you wish to service. Do the
same with libraries. Often, there is a central
address that disseminates flyers, etc. If this
exists, use it.

Next, plan an introductory conference for the
respondents, showing them your institution and
library. Inform them about your services and then
give them booktalks and guides which demonstrate how
to use the books for specific Holocaust topics and age
levels. Of course, provide them with appropriate
bibliographies.

You can then sponsor a training course for those
who want to sign up (for a fee) and you will teach it,
invite authors, assign homework, etc. I suggest 4
sessions. The fee imparts gravitas to the project as
well as covering some expenses. Have it after school
and serve coffee and cake.

Only those taking the course are entitled to
borrow books for their school or library use. I think
this should cover it. Pubicize this in your
institution newsletter.

Please do me a favor and forward this to our
Hasafran list so that others can benefit as well.
