[ha-Safran]: Yiddish Collections

2004-05-30 Thread S B
Safranot and safranim,

I wanted to test my assumption that no library with a
Yiddish collection has a copy of the following book
(romanzized title) :

Eisner, Will. _An Opmakh Mit Got_ (Amsterdam :
Lambiek).

I am inquiring about the Yiddish translated version,
NOT the transliterated version.

Since, my library does not subscribe to OCLC, RLIN or
a similar service, I searched, one by one, 28 catalogs
of libraries that have Yiddish collections (list is
below). Of these 28, I only found 3 libraries that
carried the title, but 2 of thses (Yale and Hebrew
University) have the transliterated title, not the
translation. I am not sure about YIVO's copy, as the
full catalog record was not provided ; YIVO may be the
only American library with the Yiddish edition.

If anyone out there has a Yiddish collection (which is
not on the list) and would tell me whether or not
their library has a copy of Eisner's Yiddish book, I
would appreciate it. I might have the opportunity to
present an argument at an upcoming book expo that
publishers need to do more to publicize their
publications (especially to Judaica libraries).

B'shalom,

Steven M. Bergson, Librarian
Jewish Public Library of Toronto

After doing a Google search, I happened across the
following study that seems to have been done as part
of coursework :
http://www.saramarcus.com/portfolio/ajl%20publications/ajl%20knowledge%20analysis.htm

I haven't had a chance to do more than skim it, but it
looks like a well-written paper!

The study's author, Sara Marcus, will be co-presenting
Session VII-2 (Reaching Out: Library Reference
Services for Students at Home) at the AJL Convention
in Brooklyn in 3 weeks.
