[ha-Safran]: Re: Welcome the new newsletter team

2004-10-25 Thread Roger Kohn
---

Barbara,

Having published two articles in the _Newsletter_ under your editorship,
I wanted to thank you for a superb job. It was a pleasure working with you
and I look forward to working with Libby White and Nancy Sack.

Libby and Nancy:
I wish you much success in your new endeavor, as General Editors. Could
you post the email address where authors of articles should contact you?
Should all articles to be sent to one or the other of the two co-editors or
to both at the same time? Suzanne Smailes remains the book review editor
(for Adult books) and Linda Silver Ellen Cole (for Children and Teens), I
assume.

Thanks in advance for your response,

  All the best,

- r.
Roger Kohn

[ha-Safran]: Answer to Looking for the Source

2004-10-25 Thread LAHAD5
I had posted, asking for the source of the saying that a person dies when
he uses up all his words or when he runs out of steps.

Since so many of you asked for the response, this is what I received -

It is found in Sefer Chasidim, the edition published by Mossad HaRav Kook,
paragraph 162. Also in the Mekitzai Nirdamim edition, page 13.

Additionally, as some of you mentioned, there is a mention of using up
one's allotment of words in one's lifetime in the short story Tehilla by
S.Y. Agnon.

[ha-Safran]: Dragons and monsters

2004-10-25 Thread judy.brookover
Dear Safranim,
A question has come to me that I need your help with.Is there any
tradition of dragons or monsters in jewish children's literature? Nothing
comes to mind right off. This refers to these creatures representing evil.
Any thoughts greatly appreciated.

Re: [ha-Safran]: Dragons and monsters

2004-10-25 Thread Olivia Hibel
Of course, I.B. Singer includes evil magical beings, these being
inspired doubtless by Old World Jewish superstitious lore. The story of
The Witch and The Rabbi, which my husband and I once performed for his
(Conservative) congregation, complete with antique menoras and amulets, is
an illustration. Children and adults both were delighted by this story,
and the performance actually drew kids to synagogue on a Shabbat
which--outside on the street--was just another old paper/plastic/sugary
Halloween.

Re: [ha-Safran]: Dragons and monsters

2004-10-25 Thread Rose Myers
There's Gershon's Monster by Eric Kimmel, which is a
Baal Shem Tov story I think.

There are also several versions of the story from the
Jerusalem Talmud about Rabbi Shimon ben Shetach and
the witches: Marilyn Hirsh's The Rabbi and the
Twenty-Nine Witches, and stories in various
anthologies of children's stories or folktales like
Elijah's Violin.

I suppose the Golem represents an attempt to do good
gone bad.

And there are demons in many folktales, including some
with King Solomon, some of which make it to children's
books.
