[ha-Safran]: Classification schemes for Jewish libraries

2004-11-02 Thread Leora Troper
I am volunteering with the Oregon Jewish Museum to recommend and implement
a classification scheme and cataloging system for their modestly sized
library. I'm looking for detailed information about the five different
kinds of schemes that have been developed for Jewish libraries. Do you
have any sources that you can recommend and is there a way for me to access
back issues of your journal? I am an MLS student at the SLIM program with
Emporia State University of Kansas, but I live and work here in Portland.

Thank you very much.

Sincerely,
Leora Troper

The FARHUD

At about 3 p.m., June 1, 1941, everything changed for Iraq's Jews.
Anti-Semitic riots broke out in Baghdad. Jewish shops were looted, a
synagogue burned, women raped, infants killedthe fury continued
with
policemen and the slum dwellers joining in.

No American Holocaust museum pays homage to their tragedy. Holocaust
studies have virtually overlooked the incident and its profound
consequences. The Jews of Baghdad found themselves caught between
Hitler's
master plan to dominate Europe and the Arab-Jewish conflict in
Palestine.

[ha-Safran]: Flood at the University of Hawaii Library

2004-11-02 Thread David Hirsch
Safranim-
You may have heard about the flash floods in Hawaii. I wrote to Nancy Sack
after reading that their library had been badly flooded.

Here is her reply:

Hi, David. Thanks for your concern. Thankfully, no one was hurt in the
flood but the entire ground floor of the library (housing technical
services, documents, maps, and the library school) was completely
destroyed. The biomedical sciences building also lost everything on its
ground floor. I can't even imagine how long it will take before things
are close to normal. At least today we were able to rescue a few
thousand maps, photographs, and books from the documents collection.
