[ha-Safran]: School library software

2004-11-30 Thread Loretta Sadwin
I am volunteering my time to help two Jewish day
schools find software for their libraries. One is a
K-6 school and has about 3,000 books; the other is a
7-12 school with 2 divisions. Each division has its
own library and would like to keep its own collection
separate, but they would like to access each other's
collection to see if one has a particular book
available. They are housed in 2 separate locations but
are connected by a Windows 2000 network. This school
has 4,000 books in one division and 2,000 in the
other.
I saw the list of software programs and am
wondering if someone can help me narrow down the list.

Price is an issue as neither of these schools has much
money leftover for pricey software (ex. Athena and
Spectrum- 2 that I looked into). Yet at the same
time, I want something that they can grow with and
that would have GUI and would be Z39.5 compatible.
I would like some advice from people who are
familiar with any of these software programs,
especially if they are currently using them in their
library.
Your help would be greatly appreciated,
L. Sadwin

[ha-Safran]: Jewish books for book fair

2004-11-30 Thread Sherry Berlin
My school, the San Diego Jewish Academy, has two book fairs each year with
Scholastic. They try to provide books and other items of Jewish content,
but it is not enough. I am looking for a company that does a book fair
with books of Jewish content or a publisher/distributor that can provide
books on consignment for my book fair.

[ha-Safran]: Lecture by Prof. Menahem Schmelzer at the Library of

Menahem Schmelzer, Senior Distinguished Scholar at the Library of
Congress' John W. Kluge Center, will discuss "The Royal Court Preacher
and the Hebrew Book: Early Enlightenment and Hebrew Publishing in
Prussia, 1700-1750" at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 7, in LJ-119 of the
Thomas Jefferson Building, 10 First Street S.E., Washington, D.C.

The city of Berlin had become the center of the Jewish Enlightenment by
1760, but some scholars now think that the Jewish Enlightenment, one of
the most important movements in the emergence of modern Jewry, may have
begun decades earlier with a period they are calling the "Early
Enlightenment."

In his talk, Prof. Schmelzer will examine the role in this process of
an influential figure in the Prussian court, the Christian theologian
and scholar D.E. Jablonski, who founded the Hebrew press in Berlin in
1690. Prof. Schmelzer will discuss Jablonski's life and work and his
activities as the publisher of Hebrew books in order to shed light on
the spread of secular culture and the ideals of Enlightenment and
religious tolerance among the Jews of the time.

This event, sponsored by the Kluge Center and the Hebraic Section of
the Library's African and Middle Eastern Division, is free and open to
the public. No reservations are required.
