RE: [ha-Safran]: Starting up a reference collection

2005-02-13 Thread carol joseph
A few years ago I made some field trips to local synagogue libraries to
see what other folks do, trying to update my synagogue's. I was sad to
hear, in these upper middle class communities that books are often not
returned, at least not without much prodding via phone, etc. One place
said they leave a cart near the sanctuary before services so people
could drop off returns there. Another said start with the children,
maybe that can get the parents to return their own selections.

[ha-Safran]: Shabbat Family Discussion resource

2005-02-13 Thread Samlan, Arnie
We have received a number of requests for information about the family
Shabbat discussion guides that the BJE of Greater New York produces and
distributes during the school year. Here's the information:

Around the Shabbat Table is a program of the Board of Jewish Education of
Greater New York that encourages families to turn Friday night into family
discussion night.
During the course of the year twenty ready-to-use discussion starters are
e-mailed to participating families and interested teachers and
principals. These materials are written with students in grades 7 - 10 in
mind, although they can be used by any family. The packets are
transideological in nature, written by educators and rabbis from a variety
of backgrounds and viewpoints.
Each packet includes a brief summary of the coming parashah or holiday, a
contemporary issue addressed by the parashah or holiday, discussion
questions, and some suggested resources. Families are encouraged to use
these discussion starters as a means of engaging in meaningful dialogue
around issues of values and ethics, such as honesty, conflict resolution,
self-esteem and more.
Schools can sign their families up by sending their e-mail lists to Rabbi
Arnold D. Samlan of the BJE Nassau/Queens Center (lists are used solely for
distribution of these materials), 179 Westbury Avenue, Carle Place,
NY 11514, [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Individuals (including teachers, principals, librarians) can sign up
directly through the BJE website,
http://lists.bjeny.org/scripts/wa.exe?SUBED1=shabbat_tableA=1
There is no fee for the program.
For further information contact Rabbi Samlan, [EMAIL PROTECTED] , 516-876-6535.

If the listserve allows me, I will attach a sign-up form that can be used
by schools and synagogue interested in the program.
Shabbat Shalom,

Rabbi Arnold D. Samlan
Director of Nassau/Queens Services
Board of Jewish Education of Greater New York

RE: [ha-Safran]: What is Happening to AJL?

2005-02-13 Thread Marga Hirsch
I have not seen the books mentioned in the original post, so I can't
comment on their eligibility for an award or their suitability for
inclusion in one collection or another on the basis of their particular
merits. However, I want to register my opinion that to provide Jewish
children with books that reflect their reality, we must be open to
stories of interfaith families.

For the last year and a half I have been the coordinator of The Rabbi
Morris Goodblatt Academy of the Philadelphia Region of the Rabbinical
Assembly. We offer 30 weeks of Hebrew and Judaica instruction to
individuals who are interested in conversion within the Conservative
movement. Many of our students are engaged. After conversion, they are
married with Huppah and Kiddushin. They will, God willing, be blessed
with children whom they will raise as Jews. Those children will have one
set of grandparents who celebrate Christmas. When one of those
grandparents passes away, the Jewish grandchildren will participate in
the funeral, burial, and mourning. Not every interfaith family includes
an interfaith marriage.

[ha-Safran]: Hebrew puns translated into other languages

2005-02-13 Thread Israel \izzy\ Cohen
Hebrew puns translated into other languages

I am gathering a collection of Hebrew expressions that appear in other
languages as idioms or nonsense. Some examples are provided below,
using @ = aleph, X = het, and 3 = aiyin. I hope the members of the
list can provide additional examples.

Type 1: The translation of a Hebrew pun on a Hebrew phrase

Ex. 1:
Clear text: B'QoSHi = barely, hardly, scarcely
Heb. pun: B'3oR SHiNai (Job 19:20)
English:by the skin of my teeth

Ex. 2:
Clear text: YaRa:aX GaVNooNi = gibbous moon
Heb. pun: YaRoK G'ViNaH
English:The moon is made of green cheese.

Ex. 3:
Clear text: PeLeTZ + K'Foo = shiver, tremble + frozen (compare
English palsy)
Heb. pun: P'LiZ + KoF
English:brass monkey (weather)
(Treating P as B in Arabic, P'LiZ KoF = balls (k)off ..., hence
cold enough to freeze the balls off a brass monkey)

Ex. 4:
Clear text: YeReKH = buttocks, haunch, thigh.
Heb. pun: YaRa:aX = moon
English:mooning; to moon = to expose one's buttocks

Type 2: The translation of a Hebrew pun on a phrase in another language

Ex. 5
Latin: sopor sond = sleep soundly/deeply
Heb. pun: S'PoR [EMAIL PROTECTED] (imperative)
English:Count sheep (to go to sleep)

Ex. 6
Latin: Saccharomyces cervisae = Brewer's yeast (an ancient
hangover remedy)
Heb. pun: Sa3aR MiNSHaKH KeLeV = hair bite dog (compare Greek
Cerberus, the 3-headed dog guarding the entrance
to Hades)
English:Take hair of the dog that bit you (as a hangover
remedy)

There are far more cases where a Hebrew phrase is transliterated (not
translated) into an [English] idiom. I will post some of these at a
later date. In the meantime, I hope to receive more translation
examples from list members.

Best regards,

Israel izzy Cohen

[ha-Safran]: James' Howe's book

2005-02-13 Thread Liza Stabler
Just to clarify, I agree with Linda Silver that James Howe'
Kaddish for Grandpa is absolutely unacceptable in any
Jewish Library for many reasons but particularly because of
the very syncretism Eli Wise seems to be referring to when
he speaks about assimilation.

When the editor sent me unbound galleys last year I
correspondended with her and with Howe. Among other
things, I learned that the author, however
well-intentioned, has no understanding that using the word
kaddish in the very same phrase as Jesus makes everyone
I've shown it actually gasp. Howe hadn't learned enough
about Jewish history, I assume, to get it.

Shabbat shalom,

Liza
