Re: [ha-Safran: Flowers in the Bible

2005-03-02 Thread Stanley Nachamie
There is (or at least was) a "Biblical Zoo" in Israel,
which had many of the animals mentioned in the Hebrew
Bible.
There is also a book called something like "The
Biblical Bestiary," which had information and
illustrations on all the animals mentioned in the
Hebrew Bible.

Perhaps there is a Biblical Garden in Israel, or a
similar book to the "bestiary" one.

Be aware that there are disputes among the
commentaries, both ancient and modern, about the
identity of all the plants mentioned in Tanach.

I'd be interested in hearing the answers you receive.

Thank you.

Israeli Novelists about Israel
The Sydney Taylor Book Award winner for 2004 is by an Israeli author,
Penina Moed Kass, who wrote "Real Time." For an outstanding new novel
about Israeli army service and teens in modern Israel, see "Light Years" by
Tammar Stein. For another and not as good, see "When I Was a Soldier" by
Valerie Zenatti.
For other novels for middle school about Israel by Israelis, see those
by Anna Levine, Gabrielle Carmi, Gila Almagor, Nava Semel, and Uri Orlev.

Jewish Authors about the Holocaust
There are many. Notable authors include Uri Orlev, Livia Bitton
Jackson, Ida Vos, Carol Matas, Edith Baer, Kathy Kacer, Sonia Levitin,
Nancy Patz, Mirjam Pressler, Irene Watts, Bracha Weisbarth, Kathryn Winter,
Hava Ben-Zvi, and Eva Wiseman.

what I need it must come from the OLD TESTAMENT.

Any help is appreciated.

Re: [ha-Safran]: Dynamic Modern Orthodox Speakers

2005-03-02 Thread Dina Tanners
You might want to get by Lynne Schreiber, the author of Hide and Seek:
Jewish Women and Hair Covering. She lives in the Detroit area. I
heard her speak in Seattle last May and she was fascinating. She grew
up Reform and became Orthodox on her own before she met and married
Avi Schreiber. She is a journalist by profession. The book is coming
out in a new edition in May. She is a riveting speaker on the topic
of the book. There were about 60 people in attendance and the
non-Orthodox (like me) also found the book very interesting and her
talk about her path and how the book came to be very interesting.

Also, Rivy Poupko Kletenik in Seattle is a very knowledgable and
dynamic woman speaker. She is the wife of the rabbi at the main
Orthodox Ashkenazic synagogue in Seattle and is also Director of
Education at the Jewish Education Council of the Jewish Federation of
Greater Seattle. She has taught classes at Limmud Seattle, CAJE, OU,
etc. If you google her, you will find a lot of information. Here,
for example, is a reference to her speaking in Chicago at the First
Annual Jewish Women's Educational Conference :
http://www.juf.org/news_public_affairs/article.asp?key=4498

Hope this is useful. Often women are not mentioned in response to
requests like yours.

RE: [ha-Safran]: Dynamic Modern Orthodox Speakers

2005-03-02 Thread Samlan, Arnie
Depending on what it is you're trying to accomplish, my choices would be
David Silber from D'risha Institute, Rabbi Avi Weiss from Hebrew
Institute of Riverdale, Rabbi Saul Berman of Stern College (and other
places), Rabbi Dov Lerea of the Heschel School in NY, Rabbi Steven
Greenberg (I believe he's still a CLAL fellow), Rabbi Irving (Yitz)
Greenberg of City University of NY, Dr. Devorah Steinmetz (Jewish
Theological College faculty), Richard Joel of Yeshiva University. And,
if you go as far as Israel (or are lucky enough to have dates that
overlap with already scheduled trips), then the list expands to people
like Aviva Zornberg and Rabbi Naftali Rotenberg of Van Leer Institute.

Good luck to you.

I'm researching 1 Samuel 16, and have a Hebrew question.

v. 6-8 have Samuel ready to pick Eliab as the new King but God tells him
not to be distracted by physical appearances for "the Lord does not see as
mortals see...but looks on the heart."

But in v. 12, Samuel finally meets David and finds that he "has beautiful
eyes, and was handsome." Is there a nuance to the word for "handsome" in
v. 12 that I need to know?

On a literal take it seems like the story ends with God telling Samuel,
"OK, here is someone with a physical appearance that I'll let you get
distracted by."

And as a further aside, do you have a Hebrew font for Windows?

Re: [ha-Safran]: Reading

2005-03-02 Thread Dina Tanners
Welcome to the Family is a wonderful book. It was written by a woman
who taught basic Judaism classes for years in Portland, Oregon. It is
a bit over 100 pages, if I remember correctly. I gave a copy to my
daughter's non-Jewish mother-in-law, and she felt very comfortable
reading it. In fact, when I reviewed it for the newsletter, I think I
made reference to her! It is sold through a small publishing house
in Oregon.

I work in a Judaica store in Seattle (Tree of Life Judaica and Books)
and we should be getting more copies of the book in soon. IT retails
for $14.95 (plus shipping). If an AJL member wants to buy it, just
say you are from AJL and ask for the 10% discount.

Dina Tanners

Here is some copy about it:
This practical handbook is written especially for those seeking simple
explanations about Jews, Jewish events, and Judaism, and will increase
both the reader's knowledge and comfort level in interacting with
Jewish people. It is informative, easy to read and understand. Welcome
to the Family! addresses the issues of intermarried families and
speaks to their concerns in a warm, welcoming manner, interspersing
personal family stories with basic information about the Jewish
experience. It is written from first hand experience by an educator
who is a mother and mother-in-law of intermarried children.

Most important, there are no other books like this on the market! One
can read this book and others like it to get the basic information
about being Jewish and about Judaism, but the nuance, the so-called
rules, the humor, the collective memories, the sense of belonging, the
reason why certain responses are the norm to specific
circumstances-all of these combine to make up the Jewish psyche. This
aspect of the Jewish experience is often hard to understand and even
harder to acquire. Other books simply don't address this.
