[ha-Safran]: Retirement

2005-05-26 Thread Bernice Tarlie
Dear Friends,

At the end of May I am retiring from the library world after more than 40
years. During that time I have worked in a variety of library settings --
university, public, special, day school and, lastly, the Colorado Agency
for Jewish Education (CAJE) for 16 years.

I've enjoyed them all and always been energized by the dynamic changes that
have taken place in my library lifetime -- from the soul destroying, time
consuming typing and filing of cards for the card catalog, through punch
cards, and now to amazing automation and the internet. What a thrill -- and
how deeply satisfying -- to have automated the CAJE Library and be able to
search by keyword, not only in our library but on the internet and to have
had the opportunity to make our catalog available to our patrons on our
website.

Friends have been asking how I can possibly retire and keep busy enough.
Well ... I plan to spend much more time with my children and grandchildren
who are spread far and wide in Seattle, Chicago and Washington DC. I plan
to attend interesting courses, play bridge, hike and read marvelous books
of which I've only had time to read reviews. And that's just for starters.

Since my involvement with AJL, I've been awed by HaSafran's contribution to
Judaic librarians. What a resource it is!

I am truly grateful to those AJL members who have extended friendship to me
and so willingly and generously supported and assisted me in my work. I
hope we will stay in touch. My email address is: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I wish you all well.

B'Shalom and l'hitraot,
Bernice Tarlie

[ha-Safran]: Surpass Library Software

2005-05-26 Thread JudaicaPr
We run a community Judaica library circulating ~2000 books and are looking
into improving our Library management software. We are considering
"Surpass" library software and would like to know if anyone has any
experience with this package.

Furthermore, can anyone recommend another package which you feel would suit
the needs of our library?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

THE CANTONISTS: The Jewish Children's Army of The Tsar

Larry Domnitch. Devora Publishing. Hard Cover: $21.95 ISBN:
1-930143-79-6, Soft Cover: $16.95 ISBN: 1-930143-85-0

ABOUT THE BOOK:

The Cantonist era was a terrifying episode in Jewish history, and one that
is etched in the collective memory of the Jewish people. Tsar Nicholas of
Russia conscripted thousands of Jewish children some as young as 6 years
old into his army for up to 25 years. The Tsar's declared goal was nothing
less than to convert these children to Christianity; for him, their baptism
was of the highest priority.
This book reveals the struggle of these youngsters to maintain their Judaism
against impossible odds. Many failed. But some, like Golda Meir's
grandfather, succeeded in reclaiming their heritage and reconnecting the
chain of Jewish tradition. Today, thousands of Jews are descendants of those
stalwart Cantonists.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:
Larry Domnitch has degrees in both political science and Jewish history. He
writes extensively for newspapers and journals throughout the United States
and Israel, especially about this unique period of history.
