[ha-Safran]: Question about services in Israeli libraries
Is there anyone working in an Israeli academic or municipal library or knowledgeable about services in specific libraries in Israel who would be kind enough to answer some questions for me about services to Israeli high school students? Please respond to me off-list as well as post to the list as desired. Many thanks. Re: [ha-Safran]: Judaica from Iraq
Did this person mention how long ago s/he read about this? The project began in 2003. It was mentioned in the New York Times in the following article: Iraqi Documents on Israel Surface on a Cultural Hunt Judith Miller. May 7, 2003 pA17 col 01 There was also a presentation about this project at last year's AJL convention in Brooklyn: Assignment Baghdad: Preservation of the Iraqi Jewish Archive Doris A. Hamburg, Mary Lynn Ritzenthaler Rare, historic and modern books, documents and parchment scrolls pertaining to the Iraqi Jewish community were found in the flooded basement of the Mukhabahrat headquarters in Baghdad in early May 2003. Upon removal from the basement, the wet materials were packed into sacks and transported to a location where they were partialy dried and sorted by category. The materials were subsequently packed into 27 metal trunks and in June were frozen to stabilize the collection. At the request of the Coalition Provisional Authority, Hamburg and Ritzenthaler, representing the National Archives and Records Administration, traveled to Baghdad in late June to assess the condition of the materials and provide preservation options. The Iraqi Jewish Archive suffered greatly by being under water for several weeks. The collection sustained extensive mold damage and physical distortion of textblocks. A preservation plan has been outlined in a NARA report to the White House, the Coalition Provisional Authority, and the Department of Defense. The collection has been transported to the United States where NARA has taken physical custody to oversee the preservation project. In this session, Hamburg and Ritzenthaler will discuss the circumstances surrounding their trip to Baghdad, decisions regarding moving the collection to the US, the overall presevation plan for the Iraqi Jewish Archive, and the progress made to date. In addition, they will discuss cultural and political issues that affected the decision-making, and the intriguing aspects of developing a preservation plan for cultural property in midst of ward. Doris A. Hamburg is Director, Preservations Programs, and Mary Lynn Ritzenthaler is Chief, Document Conservation Laboratory, at the National Archives and Records Administration. re: [ha-Safran]: Judaica from Iraq
Stanley, There is an article on this on today's The Art Newspaper http://www.theartnewspaper.com/news/article.asp?idart=11494. It is entitled Saddam's secret hoard of Jewish manuscripts by Martha Lufkin (Military personnel discovered the cache while searching for weapons of mass destruction in the headquarters of Saddam's secret police force in Baghdad. It has now been transferred for conservation to Washington, DC). RE: [ha-Safran]: Book recommendation
Try: The Zionist Idea edited by Arthur Hertzberg. It is a paperback collection of the writings of the leading thinkers in the Zionist movement: Herzel, Kaplan, Jabotinsky, Buber, Ben-Gurion - they are all included in this classic. The roots of many issues in modern Israeli society are all explored in this collection. For kids I highly recommend Zayda Was a Cowboy. The story of a young man who travels from the shtetl to Texas, Zayda is an engaging adventure that is a quick read and lends itself to discussion. Ages 8 and up. [ha-Safran]: RAMBI vs. Index to Jewish Periodicals
Shalom Safranim. Please allow me to solicit your opinion on this: Do you think there is a good reason for a library to subscribe to the Index to Jewish Periodicals (available now online for Ebsco back to 1988 for $850) since RAMBI is available for free? I am debating whether or not to subscribe to the Ebsco product. We have been getting it in print for quite a while. My thanks in advance for any advice. B'chavod rav. Shmuel Ben-Gad, Gelman Library, George Washington University. Try and simplify your ideas, my friend. The affair is plain and serious.-Krag in A Voyage to Arcturus by David Lindsay.
[ha-Safran]: OT: More olim pictures and why do I post them
Hi Everyone! Congratulations to the new olim that arrived from the USA today at Ben Gurion airport. I posted articles and pictures on my site at: http://www.jr.co.il/pictures/israel/history/usa-aliyah.htm If you do not see August 3, 2005 on the top of the web page, hold the control key and press the F5 key to refresh your browser. Press the F11 for full screen view. After viewing a picture, you can press your browser back button or hold the alt key and press the left arrow key to go back. Some readers may be asking: Why am I posting so many pictures of the olim ? Here are a few reasons why: 1. Each individual person that makes aliyah is changing Jewish history. One more person living in Eretz Yisrael has the potential to change the world. These are historical events that I feel are worth documenting. 2. Each individual picture has the potential to influence a relative or friend or co-worker to think about following in the olim's footsteps and making aliyah. 3. The olim, relatives and friends may be able to relive the excitement when they look at the pictures in a few days, weeks, months or years. 4. During these hard times in Israel, the pictures of olim arriving to the country, give a boost to everyones spirit in Israel. Many people have written me how the pictures make them feel good and proud of the olim. 5. Aliyah is in!! The numbers are growing!! Many consider aliyah one of the most important mitzvot. It should be worth a picture or two. Special Offer: Free pictures of your family on the aliyah website if you make aliyah. Guests meeting olim during these very early morning arrivals may also participate. This offer is open to the next 8 million olim from around the world or until I run out of disk space on my web hosting site :-) When sending pictures, please note the date of the pictures. Pictures need to be in jpg format. If the total of all pictures is over 5 megabytes, please send me an email before sending the pictures. May the aliyah from the USA (and the rest of the world) grow and bring more Jews back to their homeland, Eretz Yisrael.
