2005-09-06 Thread Linda Silver
Learnisrael.org, an advocacy group, is looking for help from librarians who
belong to ALA, especially those who belong to ALSC (Association of Library
Service to Children). Wendy Lewis, of learnisrael, is having trouble
convincing ALSC to add some positive websites about Israel to its link
"Great Websites for Kids." (So far, the great websites aren't very great
when it comes to Israel.) If you are interested in becoming involved,
which probably means no more than writing a letter or sending an email to
ALSC, please contact Wendy Lewis at

[ha-Safran]: New Judaica Web-Exhibit

2005-09-06 Thread Arthur Kiron
Dear Jewish Studies Communities,

The University of Pennsylvania Library is pleased to announce a new,
on-line exhibit entitled "The Meaning of Words: Marcus Jastrow and the
Making of Rabbinic Dictionaries." This exhibition originally was held at
the Penn Library's Rosenwald Gallery in the Fall of 2003 to honor the
100th anniversary of the publication of Jastrow's dictionary of rabbinic
literature and also to mark the centenary of his death. We offer here a
permanent, web-based version at the following URL:

http://www.library.upenn.edu/exhibits/cajs/jastrow

Special thanks are due to the original exhibit designer, Andrea
Gottschalk, Exhibition Designer for Special Collections, to Leslie
Vallhonrat, Penn Library Web Editor, who has been of great help in
presenting to the public this exhibit in its on-line version, and to
Shalom Holtz, Ph.D. candidate at Penn, who was the first to suggest this
project.

Arthur Kiron, Curator of Judaica Collections Seth Jerchower, Public and
Reference Services Librarian, Center for Advanced Judaic Studies Library.

[ha-Safran]: Library Automation

2005-09-06 Thread Paula Fine
The president of the synagogue has just asked me to prepare a budget to
automate the library. I would be interested in hearing from you which
companies you would recommend. Who is reasonably priced, would do a good
job with the retrocon, has good tech support and is librarian/user
friendly? I previously automated a synagogue library using Winnebago
Spectrum (now Sagebrush) about 6 years ago. What is your opinion of them
now? Thanks for your suggestions in advance.
