[ha-Safran]: AJL presence at Northwest Mini-CAJE, February 19th
Dear Colleagues, I'm pleased to let you know I'll be promoting the Association of Jewish Libraries next Sunday at Northwest Mini-CAJE conference in Seattle with a workshop on the role of libraries in Jewish education and homes. We'll also have a staffed AJL table featuring handouts from our many hardworking committees, examples of our publications and projects, and one-on-one consultation with administrators and educators. This conference is heavily programmed but we're hoping that despite the competition in our time slot, we'll end up with a few new supporters and/or members. If any of you have friends or family members who could be attending NW Mini-CAJE, please encourage them to come to the AJL workshop and/or stop by our table and say hello. Obviously, if anybody on this list is going to be in the area, you would be especially welcome. The conference brochure is attached FYI. You'll find us as the last workshop at 11:45 on Sunday. Too bad they didn't list the workshops alphabetically. Marga ** Marga Hirsch Library/Media Specialist Perelman Jewish Day School Stern Center - Wynnewood, PA Forman Center - Melrose Park, PA -Original Message- From: Miryam Pomerantz Sent: Monday, February 13, 2006 5:17 PM Hi, As you may know, the Jewish Book Council runs many projects, in addition to scheduling author events at Jewish book festival through the Jewish Book NETWORK. This spring, we are launching a new project, unlike any of our current ones, but also dedicated to the promotion of Jewish literature and writing and its legacy. In May, the Jewish Book Council will co-sponsor, with the Mayanot Institute, the first Israel in Print birthright israel trip. The birthright israel program offers Jewish 18-26 year olds--who have not previously been on an organized, peer trip--a free 10-day trip to Israel to experience the country, learn about the history and culture, and just generally have an amazing, fun, whirlwind tour of Israel with their peers. Recently, special interest birthright trips have been forming, trips that tailor their itinieraries and gather a group of participants with a similar focus. This new Israel in Print is a focused on literature, journalism, and writing. It will include all of the standard elements of a birthright israel trip--like swimming in the Dead Sea, hiking Masada, taking jeep rides in the desert, visiting Jerusalem, Tel Aviv, Tiberias, and Sfat--along with special activities. The partnership between Mayanot and Jewish Book Council will allow participants to see an Israel that most visitors never do - by meeting with Israel's most famous authors and journalists, respected, award-winning writers as well as the hottest up-and-coming young talent. We're very excited about this trip, but it's brand-new, and no one knows about it. Please help us spread the word. If you know of any Jewish 18-26 year old--students, grad students, friends--who is eligible for this trip and is interested in literature and journalism, please ask them to contact our office or visit www.mayanotisrael.com/jbc. The trip is tentatively scheduled for the end of May, after most universities are done for the year. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me. We do have informational postcards that we could send to you to distribute, if you are interested. [ha-Safran]: RE: More information on AJL Constitution
I would like to add my support of the concerns expressed by Ted and Hayim. The revised constitution arrived with no covering letter explaining what and why, in a dense text (small font) that did not show the changes from old to new in order to clarify the revisions (using underlining, strike outs, etc.), and not even a return envelope to mail back the ballot-card which looks like it was expected to be sent back as a post card despite the importance of not having any of our votes lost in the mail! On top of all this, there are the substantive points raised by Ted, with which Im in agreement. While I can see some reasons for having the Web- master, the editors, and the Hasafran manager on the executive board, in keeping with Ted's concerns they should not be voting members. Ted's point regarding ensuring that other forms of balloting be ensured for members not on the Web or having e-mail is paramount to avoid disenfranchising any our membership through the exclusive use of electronic balloting. Regarding the latter, I am the Parliamentarian for the Ontario Library Association's AGM (we just had our 105th!) and last year we changed our bylaws to allow electronic balloting. However, we did not adopt wording that would make it exclusive of any other form of voting. Thus, Section 20(d) states: Voting may take place in person, by mail or electronically, so long as appropriate measures are in place to assure the secrecy and security of the process. Unlike the AJL proposed wording, which states that the form of balloting is decided by Council, the OLA wording and the context of this sub-clause makes it clear that it is not one or the other form of balloting that is selected by a particlular body of the organization, but rather that all the forms may be used so long as there are proper safeguards. The proposed AJL wording, as noted by Ted, is not sufficiently clear. At this point in time, I too am faced with having to vote NO simply because I have been given no other choice in the matter! [ha-Safran]: New at Gefen: A Time For Change
Dear Librarians, New at Gefen: A Time For Change By Asher Keren Price: $15.95 Paperback * 320pp * ISBN 965-229-354-7* Publish Date: November 2005 Warning: Not for the timid. This moving and compelling tour de force will not leave a single reader unaffected, as every individual who reads this book will embark on a personal journey of struggle and inner confrontation. The author acts as the readers' personal guide, examining society's most private basic assumptions, as well as life's most fundamental values and doctrines. Several of the issues revealed, include: Have our most natural and passionate understandings of masculinity and femininity been entirely swapped in today's world for a life that is 'politically correct' and numb? Is secular Jewry as unfettered and liberal as they claim and are the religious truly following Judaism and not Christianity? How is it that Peace Now and the religious settlers are actually moving towards the same goal, despite the apparent polarity of opinions? And which side is making the wrong assumptions, thereby delaying the common objective? What does science, if anything, have to do with Judaism, and why is it that almost all those that ask questions about the relationship between the two are missing the point? Why is love and hate the perfect partners, and how is it possible to accomplish love through hate? After exploring the root causes of the various personal and societal trends within the Jewish world today, Keren presents a fresh entry into a Judaism that has been forgotten by most, religious and secular alike. For those courageous enough to enter, the author offers a brave, passionate and embracing new Jewish world and the opportunity for a time to change. RE: [ha-Safran]: Teen reading list
FYI: Judaism: A World Religions Resource List for Teens, which appeared in the February issue of VOYA is available at http://pdfs.voya.com/VO/YA2/VOYA200602Judaism.pdf While it was nice to see that AJL and the Jewish Stars list are cited in the Other Resources section, the compiler's selections, particularly in the fiction section, are kind of bizarre with many being for younger readers not teens. Also, as Linda Silver commented to me, the compiler doesn't seem to have a command of the full range of current Jewish literature for teens and maybe was looking through a book collection that isn't up to date. AJL's Jewish Stars Task Force is currently working on the 2006 edition of Recommended Books with Jewish Themes for Schools and Libraries.
